Sony 70-400mm f/4.0-5.6 overview

  • 1Description

Capture sports, wildlife, and distant action with the vast zoom range of the 70-400mm f/4-5.6 G SSM II Lens from Sony. The full-frame lens offers excellent reach an uses a variable f/4-5.6 aperture to keep size to a minimum without sacrificing quality. It also uses two extra-low dispersion elements to combat aberrations and has a Nano AR coating to reduce flare and increase contrast. Along with this, the G series lens delivers outstanding bokeh, helped in part by the nine-blade circular diaphragm.

Optimized for speed, the 70-400mm is equipped with a Super Sonic wave AF Motor with an updated LSI drive circuit for four times faster tracking performance. Also, the lens has tactile controls for intuitive operation in the form of three focus hold buttons and an electronic focus range limiter switch. Additionally, it has a dust- and moisture-resistant construction and comes with a removable rotating tripod collar.

This version II lens has been improved over its predecessor with enhanced reproduction of fine details across the frame and faster, more responsive focusing.
Designed for full-frame A-mount cameras, this 70-400mm zoom covers a vast telephoto to super telephoto zoom range that make it suitable for close-up portraits as well as distant action. Also, it can be used on APS-C format cameras where it will provide a 105-600mm equivalent zoom range.
A variable f/4-5.6 aperture allows the lens to be more compact and lightweight than comparable options with this focal length.
Two extra-low dispersion glass elements are featured in the lens design to help reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing for improved clarity and color neutrality.
A Nano AR Coating has been applied to reduce surface reflections, flare, and ghosting for increased contrast and color rendering in strong lighting conditions.
An SSM autofocus system with an enhanced algorithm and new LSI drive circuit provides quick, quiet, and precise focusing and much more responsive performance in tracking modes. The lens also features an internal focusing design that keeps the overall size constant and helps achieve a minimum focus distance of 4.9' with a magnification of 0.27x.
An electronic focus range limiter switch allows you constrain the usable focus range between a set limited range or full for improving focus speed, and three focus hold buttons are also featured to manually stop the autofocus at a specified point.
Dust and weather-sealed construction benefits using the lens in inclement shooting conditions.
The lens is equipped with a removable and rotating tripod collar for added stability and reducing strain on the camera's lens mount.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality when employing selective focus techniques.
The included lens hood features a filter access window for making adjustments to rotating filters.
This lens is compatible with Sony's 1.4x and 2x teleconverters which can increase the effective focal length to 98-560mm and 140-800mm, respectively.

    Sony 70-400mm f/4.0-5.6 reviews

    70-400mm f/4-5.6 G SSM II Lens is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 36.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Fully usable wide open at 400mm On A900: As sharp as my Sigma 400mm Macro APO at 400/5.6 and Minolta 300/4+1.4xTC at 420/5.6. The Sony has equal or better resolution at 400/5.6 than my Tamron 200-500, Sigma 135-400, and Minolta 100-400 set at 400/8. For tracking moving object, the Sony lens is better than all other lens I have tested. Some color fringing could still be observed in high contrast area, but all of them can be easily removed with post processing. Bokeh is showing busy swirl a lot compared to Tamron 200-500 and Minolta 100-400. One physical short coming is zoom creep and no zoom lock at 70mm.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love It I bought this lens as an upgrade to my sal70300g lens to give me a little more length for wildlife photography. I am very pleased with this lens. It is sharper at 400mm than the 70300g is at 300mm and less and I think the 70300g is an excellent lens. The color and contrast is great. The bokeh is better than what I expected. I use this lens on the sony a65 so the focal length is actually 600mm. Because of the added focal length and the weight of the lens, I purchased a monopod which really made a difference when using slower shutter speeds where the in-camera stabilization is just not enough. I don't use auto focus all that much as I mainly use manual focus with peaking focus on the a65. However, the auto focus is fast, quiet and accurate. The build of the lens is solid.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exceeded my expectations Used correctly, thi lens in nothing short of outstanding. I had the previous version and when using it with my A99, I was not impressed. The G2 is really different. The AF is much faster and more accurate. The CA is well controlled, and contrast/sharpness is more than i hoped for. The best sharpmess is at f5.6-f8. The lens is mounted on my Sony A77II which gives the effect of a 600mm f4/5.6 lens at a fraction of the price of a prime 600mm on a 24MP full frame. OK, the prime is sharper, but not as much as you might think. On many of my shots, there is not any signigicant difference with my Canon 600mm. I attribute these results to the fact that the A77II and this lens are two of the very best products that Sony has. The end result is that I am doing far more nature photography with this combo than with my previous prime and full frame set-up.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Another Great Sony Lens I've been using the original silver version of this lens for more than 4 years with 4 different camera bodies. The original lens is a great lens that produces very clear images at 400mm even at wide open aperture. My only frustration with the original lens has been while shooting pictures of songbirds in brush and vegetation. I find myself talking to the lens, telling it to please focus on the bird. I really like the white finish on the new lens. When I read that it would focus faster and more accurately than the original lens, I could hardly wait for it to become available. My first pictures with the new lens were of a micro focus chart. I was very disappointed when I discovered that the image was soft at f/5.6. At f/8, the image was very sharp and there was no difference between the new and old lenses. I used the new lens for one week shooting pictures of whitetail deer, several backyard birds and more than 1000 pictures of hummingbirds. The focus was quick and accurate with no hunting. The image at f/8 was a little clearer and more vibrant than with the old lens. After discussing the soft focus issue at f/5.6 with the retailer and a Sony technician, I returned the lens and exchanged it for a different but identical lens. I am much better pleased with the replacement lens. It produces tack sharp images at any focal length at f/8 and the image is only slightly softer at f/5.6. The focus is measurably quicker than the old lens. Focus seems to be snappier in the field. It is quick and locks on very accurately. I am convinced it will be much less frustrating next year during spring migration. I would definitely recommend this lens to a friend.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not convinced yet After reading the accolades about this lens I question myself and what I'm experiencing, but I have to say that, provisionally, the sharpness of this lens at full magnification is much inferior to the Sony 70=300G SSM. Granted I'm still checking it out but I'm taken aback by the difference when I compare the two using a focus card from 50 ft. If anyone can tell me why I'm getting bad results please tell me as I have this lens scheduled for return.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great lens for various uses On a full frame camera like the A99, the I've used it as a portrait lens on the short end, and for wildlife and birds on the long lens. The focus is noticeably quicker than the old silver version, and the quality of the photos are excellent, just like the old version. It's a little short in reach for small birds on a full frame, but would be fine on a cropped sensor. It is big, but light enough that I don't mind carrying it around all day on a hike (especially with a good sling system). It is considerably more expensive than the original version, so it's totally a personal choice whether to upgrade. If you don't have a long lens, you couldn't go wrong with this one. The new Tamron 150-600mm might be worth a look, once the A-mount version comes out -- it would be half the cost with a 50% longer reach, but 150mm short end would be less versatile than the 70mm for the Sony. If this is the range you're looking for, you can't go wrong with this lens.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Sharp at 400mm I bought this lens to replace my 70-200 G2 and was hoping it would be sharp at full focal length. very pleased with results. Its great to have the extra length. I was using a 1.4x converter on the 70-200, so that put me at f4, same with the 70-400. So, now I have an extra 120mm and pleased with sharpness. I need to get used to the lens extending externally instead of the internal focus of the 70-200. Both lens can at times be sluggish with auto focus in low light. Not ideal, but overall sharpness more important. The focus issue give it 4 out of 5 stars. (Sharpness 5 stars)
    Date published: 2017-01-05
Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Pleasant Surprise This lens has surprised me. A prior reviewer said it exceeded expectations. The same has been true for me on a Sony a77MII. I am getting nice, bright, sharp actions shots (sports primarily) even at full telephoto. I condider this lens essential for baseball or fastpitch because of the bad shooting locations you usually have to deal with. I also use it a great deal for soccer. I had not expected the level of sharpness that I am getting. Be advised that this is not a fast lens, so if you are shooting in less than brightly lit conditions you are going to have to make some iso and/or speed compromises, but Sony brand fast lens with this amount of reach are extremely pricey (and those do not zoom!) Also, please be advised that this lens zooms externally, and not internally,as is the case with the SAL70200GII. Consider a monopod. This is heavy lens for handheld, and at 400mm (550mm on an APS-C camera) you will need all the steadiness you can get. Finally, know that this lens is not compatible with Sony teleconverters.
