Sony 70-400mm f/4-5.6 G SSM II Overview

Capture sports, wildlife, and distant action with the vast zoom range of the 70-400mm f/4-5.6 G SSM II Lens from Sony. The full-frame lens offers excellent reach an uses a variable f/4-5.6 aperture to keep size to a minimum without sacrificing quality. It also uses two extra-low dispersion elements to combat aberrations and has a Nano AR coating to reduce flare and increase contrast. Along with this, the G series lens delivers outstanding bokeh, helped in part by the nine-blade circular diaphragm.

Optimized for speed, the 70-400mm is equipped with a Super Sonic wave AF Motor with an updated LSI drive circuit for four times faster tracking performance. Also, the lens has tactile controls for intuitive operation in the form of three focus hold buttons and an electronic focus range limiter switch. Additionally, it has a dust- and moisture-resistant construction and comes with a removable rotating tripod collar.

This version II lens has been improved over its predecessor with enhanced reproduction of fine details across the frame and faster, more responsive focusing.
Designed for full-frame A-mount cameras, this 70-400mm zoom covers a vast telephoto to super telephoto zoom range that make it suitable for close-up portraits as well as distant action. Also, it can be used on APS-C format cameras where it will provide a 105-600mm equivalent zoom range.
A variable f/4-5.6 aperture allows the lens to be more compact and lightweight than comparable options with this focal length.
Two extra-low dispersion glass elements are featured in the lens design to help reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing for improved clarity and color neutrality.
A Nano AR Coating has been applied to reduce surface reflections, flare, and ghosting for increased contrast and color rendering in strong lighting conditions.
An SSM autofocus system with an enhanced algorithm and new LSI drive circuit provides quick, quiet, and precise focusing and much more responsive performance in tracking modes. The lens also features an internal focusing design that keeps the overall size constant and helps achieve a minimum focus distance of 4.9' with a magnification of 0.27x.
An electronic focus range limiter switch allows you constrain the usable focus range between a set limited range or full for improving focus speed, and three focus hold buttons are also featured to manually stop the autofocus at a specified point.
Dust and weather-sealed construction benefits using the lens in inclement shooting conditions.
The lens is equipped with a removable and rotating tripod collar for added stability and reducing strain on the camera's lens mount.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality when employing selective focus techniques.
The included lens hood features a filter access window for making adjustments to rotating filters.
This lens is compatible with Sony's 1.4x and 2x teleconverters which can increase the effective focal length to 98-560mm and 140-800mm, respectively.

The auto focus is a lot faster on this lens than the older silver model and to me it feels a little lighter! It takes great pictures! I am impressed with it and I don't regret buying it! I can't wait until I can get out for a lot more testing! David

I got the lenses and put it on my Sony a55 (Yea its old, now looking at a a99ii) walked out side the door and snapped this quick photo that was hand held and done on the fly just to see what I would get. Very impressed. Have found that well lit conditions are great, when in lower light it has me wanting a camera with a much higher ISO setting. Lens clearly has great possibilities, looking forward to the Alaska trip and photographing wildlife.

My 2nd 70-400mm G2

I love this lens for wildlife photography on my A-68. I purchased one a few years ago, but fell in the creek with it, so this is a replacement. The first replacement I ordered didnt test out perfectly, but B&H quickly replaced it with no questions asked. This one is extremely sharp wide open at 400mm and focuses extremely fast. Heres six recent photos - some wide open at ISO-3200+. The fox kit was underexposed by about one f-stop so is really more like ISO-6400 - still with nice fur detail. Getting best focus results might require micro-focus adjustment. Mine required a setting of +6.

Well worth the price. A bit hefty in weight, but the images that you get are sharp and crisp. I even occasionally use it for portraiture (see photo). This is definitely another great A-mount 'G II' lens from Sony.

I have only had this lens for a couple of days so I decided to try it out on an early cloudy morning, it surprised me how fast this Lens would auto focus in really low light even with the lens hood and a Circular Polarizer Filters on it! I have one of the older Sony 70-400 mm f/4-5.6 G SSM and this lens is a lot faster and it might be me but it also feels a little lighter! I paired this Lens with a Sony a77ii camera and I am very pleased with the results I got! Can't wait to get out on a clear day and really see what I can do with it this camera and lens! My only regret is that I appear that they have discontinued the Sony a77ii camera love that camera! Thank You B&H Photo for having great products at a great price!

Yes the Steady Shot in the camera should be turned off when using a monopod to support the A77 and your lens/TC to avoid any undesirable effects.

To use the Sony 70-400mm f/4-5.6 G SSM II Lens which has a Sony A mount on the Sony A7R which has a Sony E mount, the Sony A-Mount to E-Mount Lens Adapter with Translucent Mirror Technology (Black), B&H# SOLAEA4 would be needed. https://bhpho.to/2kgmMYR
