Radial Engineering SB-5 Overview

The Radial Engineering StageBug SB-5 is an ultracompact passive direct box designed for DJs, musicians, and presenters who need a simple, reliable solution for connecting a smartphone, tablet, or laptop to a PA system, a mixing console, or an audio interface. Equipped with two custom-wound transformers, it reduces hum and buzz while allowing long cable runs.

The StageBug SB-5 features a 3.5mm TRS stereo mini plug on an attached 5' cable for direct hookup to your mobile device. Outputs include two 1/4" TRS jacks and a balanced XLR 3-pin male connector. A stereo-to-mono merge function allows easy routing of your stereo source into a mono mixer channel. Use the -15 dB pad to avoid distortion when dealing with high-output content such as mastered tracks.

Thanks to its passive design, the StageBug SB-5 requires no batteries or phantom power. It sports a ground-lift switch to inhibit problematic noise from ground loops. Integrated side-panel hooks enable convenient and tidy cable management.

  • Easy-to-use interface for connecting any mobile playback device to a mixer or PA system
  • Attached 5' cable with a right-angle 3.5mm TRS stereo mini plug for direct connection to your laptop, smartphone, or tablet
  • Two custom-wound transformers isolate signals to prevent hum/buzz and balance the audio to feed long cable runs without noise
  • Left and right 1/4" TRS outputs for stereo operation
  • Mono XLR 3-pin output
  • -15 dB pad prevents distortion from high-output audio sources
  • Side-panel cable hooks allow tidy cable management
  • Passive design requires no power source
  • Ground-lift switch eliminates ground-loop noise

this thing is the exact tool i need for playing my iPad through the PA. it's small, well-built, rugged, has a built in 1/8" connector with ears to wind it up on, and all the right inputs and outputs. perfect.

I would purchase this device again.

The stage bug direct box is an excellent solution for getting audio from various sources such as phones, tablets, or laptops. It has made interfacing with these devices a simple matter of plug and play on Sunday mornings when you get those last minute requests. Having the cable attached to the device is also a great time saver.

Great little piece of gear in a tight spot

Previous PC DI's I've used in the past have all been stereo output - eating up precious snake and channel space in order to receive the full spectrum of the signal. I like that the StageBug not only has a compact foot-print, but sums the signal down to a single line. Not to mention how handy it is that the mini-cable is built in!

I notice on your photos the single XLR output ...

I notice on your photos the single XLR output says, "LEFT MONO OUT". I thought this was a summed L-R mono output as stated in the product description. I've viewed Radial's website and I see both, "MONO OUT" and "LEFT-RIGHT MONO OUT". B&H, can you please clarify if this output is truly a summed left-right output? And if it is perhaps you may wish to update your images to reflect this and remove potential confusion. Thanks for your continued fantastic service.
Asked by: Anthony
I checked the link you provided and the images there show "Mono Out", not "Left Mono Out". THe block diagram under Specifications link shows a summed Mono. And under the tablet connection example it states, "Connect your iPad or Galaxy tablet to the SB-5 via the integral 3.5mm cable connection and sum to mono via the XLR output."
