The Tape Express Plus Tape-to-Digital Converter & Player from ION Audio is a portable tape player designed to transfer the analog audio stored on cassettes to digital files by means of its included USB cable. Simply load any chrome or stereo cassette tape, hook up the player to your computer via USB, instantiate the included EZ Vinyl/Tape Converter software, and commence the digitizing and transfer of your taped material. The device also sports a 3.5mm stereo output for monitoring audio straight from the player while you engage in this process. It can be powered with AA batteries (available separately) or over USB, can load digital music files into your library or onto a different mobile player (such as an iPhone or iPod), and can operate without the need of an independent driver.

Can you connect the USB to a cigarette lighter adapter so you can listen to tapes in your car?
Yes, the Tape Express Plus can be powered via USB, so you can use a cigarette lighter style USB adapter for power while in your car (just as you would to charge a smartphone). The Tape Express Plus can also be powered by two AA batteries. If you do also use batteries for power, you may want to take the batteries out of the Tape Express Plus when you are powering via USB.

One of the reviews says that this will not digitize "homemade" tapes - only factory tapes. Is this true?
The tapes I digitized with the ION Audio Tape Express Plus were mostly "homemade" tapes and they turned out fine. I am happy to have discovered this converter.

question
This sounds too good to be true, but I want to convert spoken tapes that contain many pauses. Will the device create a new 'track' each time there's a silence? And if there isn't a pause, will it create a track after 4 mins anyway?
Hi, Thanks for posting! As was mentioned, there are two settings in the software: one to split the tracks and one to record continuously where you can split the tracks manually. Use the continuous recording and this will record up to the entire side of the tape.

question
I want to transfer an old tape of my grandmother speaking to iTunes to later use as voice over on a iPhoto slide show. Can I do it with this ION converter?
Hi, thanks for asking!Yes, you could use this to convert virtually any audio on your cassettes. The software will create an audio file which you can then transfer to iTunes or use in a video or slideshow.
