Senal SMH-500 overview

  • 1Description

The SMH-500 Professional Studio Headphones from Senal feature accurate sound, superior comfort, and durable materials. They are designed for studio and light field applications. The over-ear, closed-back design provides ample isolation to block out ambient noise on location, and prevent headphone leakage when recording in the studio. Their soft, replaceable ear cushions, lightweight design and refined sound ensure a comfortable listening experience, even during extended sessions.

Equipped with 40mm neodymium drivers at 58 ohm impedance, the SMH-500 headphones are designed to be loud enough when attached to low-powered devices such as mobile phones and mp3 players, yet robust enough to handle studio headphone amps without distortion.

The headphones are designed with an EQ curve that's been tailored for an enhanced low end that allows engineers to detect rumble and monitor bass frequencies effectively. The excellent high-frequency response has been enhanced to accurately and clearly reproduce spatial detail. There is also a slight bump in the midrange to maintain focus on vocal and dialogue intelligibility.

In addition to great sound, the SMH-500 headphones offer superior comfort with a soft padded headband. The 10' single-sided coiled cable allows freedom of movement for musicians, editors, and engineers.

Whether monitoring in the field, studio or on a portable device, the SMH-500 headphones provide an accurate and comfortable listening experience.

    Senal SMH-500 reviews

SMH-500 Professional Studio Headphones is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 39.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from EQ Curve designed for sound engineers Could not beat the price, plus the discounted add-on leather ear cushions. I plugged these into my laptop and reduced volume control from 20 (internal speakers) down to 5. Clamping pressure will likely ease with use, I expect. These will be used in engineering live sound for concert recording and church services, and in converting old LPs to CD at home. The 1/4 gold-plated adapter screws on the mini plug; very secure. The EQ curve is designed to enhance the low frequencies, for reducing wind noise and other bass sources to improve the balance in recording and live sound reinforcement. Watch the demo video for the SMH-1000 and read the product description. Looks like a great value for the price!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good Sound - logo popped off Decent set of headphones for monitoring audio. Mainly used for interviews on a documentary we are working on. Recommended by my B&H guy and they did the job for me recently in London & NY. I suppose build quality not so good as the metal logo popped off while I was shooting. Not a big deal and can't be bothered sending it back, but perhaps the manufacturer might fix that so we can all do free advertising for them. For a few bucks more he did recommend the one with detachable cord so you could use a smaller or longer cord depending on your needs but this worked fine for me. So far.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good, Sub $100 Option for Run-n-Gun An audio professional may have a different opinion. I'm a camera owner-operator and I purchased these for run-n-gun field work. My former pair was damaged in transit to NYC and I walked in to B&H and got these on the spot. They are light, inexpensive and comfortable. Sound quality is acceptable. I don't use expensive studio monitors for field work, because the higher likelihood of them getting damaged. These fit the bill perfectly. There is a difference in sound quality when compared to the Sony MDR-7506's. That's fine with me, they are completely acceptable for monitoring audio from a field recorder or out of camera.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Would buy again, great product in this price range I have read many mixed reviews on the SMH-500 for field and studio monitoring, but with my testing I think they are superb for the price. They block out a lot of unwanted noise compared to my AKG K44 headphones, which are in the same price range. They also provide me with much more detail that didn't even know were missing. The build quality is very decent on these, I take them around in my bag and they have not shown any problems with wear. The coiled cable is great and makes it so much easier to monitor audio without the cable getting in the way. Great entry level option in this price range, I would buy again or better yet try the SMH-1000 next.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very comparable to Sony MDR-V6 I have a pair of Sony MDR-V6 headphones, and the SMH-500 has a very similar fit and sound. They are very comfortable on the head. With the SMH-500 being available in the mid $30 range on sale, I'd grab a pair over the more expensive Sonys.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Right side of headphone broke and no longer plays sound After almost a year, the right side of the headphone stopped playing sound and only the left side works and still plays sound. I requested warranty from senal as per the three year limited warranty but they required me to pay for shipping back to their RMA center that costs almost as much as purchasing a new headset and refused to provide a shipping label. If I have to pay 16-20 bucks USPS priority mail just to get warranty service, I might as well buy a new headphone and take my business elsewhere. I am sorely disappointed with senal's product which has proven to be rather flimsy compared to other more reliable competitors like the sony mdr7506. I am also dissatisfied with Senal's customer service and warranty.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sounds great, music sounds natural. Hook this up to a Roland digital piano. The coiled cable is very useful. I don't have to take it off if I switch piano pieces. I noticed the difference in sound from the old Sony headphone I used before. Senal sound is even, does not hear lots of bass. At first I said that I missed my Sony, but then I started to get the hang of it. I began to notice that I am hearing somewhat close to the sound that the piano actually is producing. Compared this again with Beats, that headphone has too much bass - does not sound natural to me. This Senal headphone is comfortable and construction seems solid. My son uses this when he creates his own music. Listened Pandora on a Mac - I like the sound and no complaints there. I hear all the instrument used in the accompaniment. For the price, you can never go wrong. I will try the SMH-1000 once it goes on sale. I will give it 5 stars.
