Canon 5043B031AA overview

  • 1Description

Canon's Powershot SX230 HS Digital Camera (Black) adds a new twist to the feature-packed PowerShot cameras: built-in GPS that will automatically tag your photos with time and location. It also offers a full set of photographic goodies in a very small package (4.1 x 2.4 x 1.3"/10.5 x 6.1 x 3.3 cm and weighing in at just 6.88 oz/195 g)--a 12.1MP CMOS high resolution sensor, a super-zoom 14x wide-angle 28-392mm lens (equivalent in 35mm format), and full 1920 x 1080 HD video with stereo sound, for starters.

It's also got the advanced HS system delivering clear, sharp photos with detail and nuance in low light, with high or low ISO images. Optical image stabilization keeps away the shaky pictures and video, and Smart AUTO recognizes and sets optimal exposure, shutter and focus settings for 32 predefined shooting situations. The Super Slow Motion Movie mode records video at 240fps for a very slow motion playback, and the High-Speed Burst mode allows you to shoot still photos at up to 8.1fps.

A large range of creative effects is available, including fisheye effect, miniature effect (stills and video), toy camera effect that creates a vignette similar to pinhole cameras, monochrome, super vivid, color accent, color swap (pick one color in a photo and replace that color with another of your choice), long shutter to blur moving objects for artistic effect, and many more. One of the most convenient features is the Movie Digest Mode, which will automatically record a short video clip (up to approximately 4 seconds) every time you shoot a still image. The camera will then combine an entire day's worth of clips into a single video--no editing required.

Experience the Power
The Canon HS SYSTEM takes the frustration out of low light shooting. The system delivers clear, blur-free shots with all the ambiance intact, and frees you from the sometimes unwanted effects of using the flash. Beautiful low light shots are possible at both low and high ISO speeds, and the dynamic range is expanded to retain maximum detail in highlight and shadow areas. The system is the result of two technologies brought together in a compact PowerShot. The first is the 12.1 Megapixel CMOS Sensor, which positions the light-receiving surface for optimal light reception. More light means clearer, blur-free images with plenty of detail and nuance, even in dark areas. Working together with the CMOS sensor to deliver the HS SYSTEM is Canon's advanced DIGIC 4 Image Processor, which actively reduces noise and delivers high speed image processing.

    Canon 5043B031AA reviews

Powershot SX230 HS Digital Camera (Black) is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 202.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Versatile little camera with HD video! I am an experienced amateur. I purchased this camera to replace my old Canon point-and-shoot. I loved the promise of camera that can shoot in low light situations without a flash. My first outing with this camera was a concert, shooting still photos and video from the cheap seats. Over all, I am thrilled with this camera's ability to zoom and focus in low lighting such as a concert. I used it outdoors on Easter and was very happy with the shots then too. I like the large LCD screen. The auto focus finds faces in every situation I have used it. Having trouble finding anything not to like.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Just an ordinary point & shoot I chose this camera rather than Nikon similars because of the manual controls. They do their job, but I cannot say the same abou the auto mode. It does not control the flash so well, giving me poor results with night pictures. And there's no forced flash in auto mode. The good point is that I'm being forced to learn how to use the manual modes. I also expected a better performance in low light conditions, like night landscapes, but I'm getting noisy images. My old 2MP Nikon, and my not so old Cybershot were much better point and shoot cameras. I mean, this is not a bad camera. I just expected a better performance due to the price tag.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Point & Shoot for Quick Pics This little camera takes great pictures and nice HD video. Great for a vacation by having both a video and a picture camera in one. It took a while to come out, but the camera was worth waiting for. The only negatives are that the Pop-Up flash is easily blocked when turning the camera on and the Full-HD is only 24FPS. It's a solid camera that does a lot of the thinking for you to give a great picture. A little more pricey than it's Elph counterpart but the money is in the better lens.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great little camera, poor documentation Great size, range and features. Only issue is the lack of any meaningful hard copy documentation. If you went by what is included you would not even realize there is a GPS function. I understand the info is on the included CD however, lugging a computer into the field can be a bit cumbersome. With all of the features this guy has, GPS is just one, the inclusion of a small pocket size manual like the 5D or 1D series would be very beneficial. I did write this up pretty much as I have here and submitted it on the manufacturers review site and it came back as REJECTED! I emailed them and asked what rule I had violated but as of yet no response.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great camera I was in the market for a pocket type of camera to carry in my purse. I'm a serious photographer and have a Canon 7D for my nature photography. It is too large to carry with me everywhere but I still like to have a camera with me. This small camera fits the bill and then some. It can do a lot for a point and shoot and I have gotten fabulous photos when I might have missed them because I wasn't carrying my camera. I would recommend this camera to anyone who wants a small camera that can handle lots of different lighting situations with suprising results. Can't replace the 7D, of course, but is a very satisfactory camera to have when I don't want to take the big one. I love it.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Underwhelmed Perhaps my expectations were too high, but I've been underwhelmed by the camera. In particular, it's ability to capture action shots is disappointing. The burst mode is really slow when there isn't very strong light. Image stabilization is not what I expected (I make a concerted effort to hold the camera steady and wherever possible brace my arms against fixed objects to further steady the camera). But still too many blurry shots. I was expecting this Canon to be head-and-shoulders better than my previous $70-or-so point-and-shoot and while it is certainly better and more versatile, it's not that much better. It's an OK camera but I am mildly disappointed in its performance.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Handle with Care For a two-day trip to Bryce/Zion/Grand Canyon, I needed a new pocket travel zoom to complement my main DSLR with a 24-105. This camera captured sharp, detailed images with excellent color reproduction. The zoom capability was the primary reason I chose this model and it did not disappoint, easily capturing big horn sheep and close-ups of the rock formations. The movie mode is easy to use. I bought an extra battery, but battery life was not an issue. My main problem with this camera is that the shuttering lens cover is VERY FRAGILE. It got bent while carrying the camera in my pocket and would not open/close properly. We worked on it and got it almost back to normal, but I fear it will never be right.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best compact camera I have owned. The picture quality is amazing. The ability to shoot in aperature and shutter priority or full manual is great. Geotagging is indispensible after having it in my iPhone. It is not assisted, so no as quick to lock on to locations, but after it figures out where it is, it is faster the next time you power up in the same vicinity. The pop up flash is a nice touch. The camera is overall fast and responsive. My favorite features are the handheld night shot mode which enables non-blurry night shots by taking 3quick shots and overlaying them instead of using a long exposure. Brilliant. I could never get a nice shot of the skyline at night with previous cameras. The portrait mode works really well also. Image stabilization is amazing even using full zoom.. The only things negative are the slightly too tight mode wheel and the short battery life. Buy an extra battery!
