Summing up several telephotos in one convenient zoom, the AF-S NIKKOR 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR from Nikon is a versatile lens covering portrait-length to super-telephoto focal lengths. Characterized by an advanced optical design, this lens uses one super extra-low dispersion element and four extra-low dispersion elements to noticeably reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing throughout the zoom range for improved clarity. Both Nano Crystal and Super Integrated Coatings have also been applied to control flare and ghosting in order to increase contrast and color accuracy in bright and backlit conditions. A Silent Wave Motor AF system produces fast, near-silent focusing performance that suits both stills shooting and movie recording, which can instantly be manually overridden by simply turning the manual focus ring. Further contributing to photographing in fast-paced situations and difficult lighting, Vibration Reduction image stabilization compensates for the effects of camera shake by up to four shutter speed stops.

Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR Reviews
Great for what it is
This lens seems to get mixed reviews. Mine is great, but maybe there is a lot of copy variation? Mine is tack sharp at short and medium distances, even with 1.4x iii teleconverter. At infinity focus it is acceptably sharp, but not quite as good as at short distances. Like all first party telephoto lenses, the triod foot is not Arca Swiss compatible (a major annoyance) so I had to buy the Kirk replacement collar. One quirk of this lens (even LensRentals confirms this) is that the autofocus in continuous mode is a bit jittery. The lens shakes while focus is engaged, though this does not affect focus performance or image quality. It just feels a bit weird (my E series lenses do not do this). It's not a fast aperture lens (f2.8 or f4) and it's not a super long telephoto (500mm or 600mm), so if that is what you need then don't get this lens. (Hence my title great for what it is). It is a compact, easily hand-holdable telephoto with a good range and good sharpness. If that fits your needs, then I think you will like it as I do.
Super sharp
Well worth the price. The sharpness of this lens is amazing. Is a bit on the heavy side but with an over the shoulder camera strap it is very manageable. Great for nature outings! Oh, did I mention how sharp this lens is!!!!!
Sharp, rich, impressive images.
I have used this lens for about 3 months and I find it to be versatile, sharp and easily managed. It always seems to be in my bag. The AF is quiet and fast. Frankly, the resolution is better than I expected from a zoom. I put it on my D850 and have only taken it off once. For some reason, this lens and camera are a great match. I rarely use my tripod for wildlife with this lens. The VR is excellent. The weight and size are modest, so the lens is great for travel. The lens is sharp from 80 to 400mm. I am writing now because i just received yet another wow comment from a pro to a posted image. Additionally, I bought the Kirk collar and recommend it if it is within your budget. It is simply an addition that enhances your experience beyond the cost of it.
Great lens
Replaced my Nikon 200-500mm telephoto and lens and lost 3 lbs of weight to carry!
great lens
Love it....much lighter than my old Nikon 200-500 zoom I would recommend getting the Kirk collar to lower the profile/ CG
Great lens
The lens will focus fast and give tack sharp pictures. I did a trade-in with a 70-200mm f/2.8 lens. The trade-off was a lens with twice the focal length (400mm) but with f/4.5-5.6 Since I travel and wanted the extra focal length capability, this was a good purchase.
Great Nikon Lens for Many Photo Situations!
Just used this lens with my D850 at Disney World's Animal Kingdom. Easy enough to handle and photos were sharp at the different focal lengths. Highly recommend!
Love this lens!
I love this lens! It's extremely fast and sharp. Great for wildlife!
