  • F-Mount Lens/FX Format
  • Aperture Range: f/4.5 to f/40
  • Four ED Elements, One Super ED Element

Characterized by an advanced optical design, this lens uses one super extra-low dispersion element and four extra-low dispersion elements to noticeably reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing throughout the zoom range for improved clarity. Both Nano Crystal and Super Integrated Coatings have also been applied to control flare and ghosting in order to increase contrast and color accuracy in bright and backlit conditions. A Silent Wave Motor AF system produces fast, near-silent focusing performance that suits both stills shooting and movie recording, which can instantly be manually overridden by simply turning the manual focus ring. Further contributing to photographing in fast-paced situations and difficult lighting, Vibration Reduction image stabilization compensates for the effects of camera shake by up to four shutter speed stops.

Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR Overview

Summing up several telephotos in one convenient zoom, the AF-S NIKKOR 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR from Nikon is a versatile lens covering portrait-length to super-telephoto focal lengths.

Portrait-length to super-telephoto zoom is designed for FX-format F-mount cameras, however can also be used with DX models where it will provide a 120-600mm equivalent focal length range.
One super extra-low dispersion element and four extra-low dispersion elements greatly reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations in order to produce greater clarity and color accuracy.
Both a Nano Crystal Coat and a Super Integrated Coating have been applied to individual elements to suppress internal reflections, flare, and ghosting for improved contrast and color accuracy when working in strong lighting conditions.
Silent Wave Motor affords quick, quiet, and precise autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override. An internal focusing design is also used, where only the internal lens groups are moved during focusing, to maintain the overall length of the lens during use and to promote faster focusing speeds.
Vibration Reduction image stabilization helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by four stops to benefit shooting handheld in difficult lighting conditions.
Rotating tripod collar benefits working with the lens atop a tripod or monopod.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm promotes a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.
Compatible with optional AF-S Teleconverter TC-14, TC-17, and TC-20 teleconverters.

Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR Reviews

Great lens

The lens will focus fast and give tack sharp pictures. I did a trade-in with a 70-200mm f/2.8 lens. The trade-off was a lens with twice the focal length (400mm) but with f/4.5-5.6 Since I travel and wanted the extra focal length capability, this was a good purchase.

I use it on both my Nikon FX D780 and my Nikon DX D7200 cameras, and it works well on either camera.

Nice combo with D500

I am overall impressed with the quality of photos I get with this fine lens. It's fast focusing and sharp most of the time. I get some great moon and wildlife shots with it and with the crop factor on the D500 it's great most of the way up to 400/600 equivalent. I do find it gets a touch soft at the full zoom, but just a bit back and it's pretty perfect. I don't use it a lot, but when I do need something to go beyond 200 I'm more than happy that I invested in this lens.

Review of 80-400 Nikkor lens

I bought this lens several years ago and mounted it on my Nikon D300. The I didn't use it much because I thought it wasn't sharp enough. In 2017 I bought a Nikon D850 and a 500mm f4G lens. As I gained experience with my 500 F4G I went back and tried the 80-400 lens with it mounted on the D850. The difference was amazing and this has been my primary lens for bird photography all winter. It is light enough to use for my walking around lens and image quality has been excellent. I will still use the 8.6 pound 500 lens for the warblers in the woods but I will be shooting from my mobile blind when I do that. Everything else will be with the 80-400 when I need to shoot handheld or need to walk around with it. It is one of my favorite lenses for close bird work and I use it a good bit for street photography for photographing people with umbrellas in the rain.

14-24, 24-70, 80-400 Is The Best Setup Going On

When I bought my D850 I put together some prime lenses and then the standards, a 14-24 a 24-70 and then took a detour from the standard set up of getting the 70-200. Instead I bought this 80-400 in its place. Well I am happy to report that I have definitely not made the wrong choice. I get an extra 200mm reach plus good vibration reduction a sharp ED lens and other settings not found on the 70-200. It is definitely the way to go for a three lens, one bag, setup.

This is a great lens.

Nikon continues to make long range telephoto lens smaller and better quality. Its reasonably close focusing distance and long reach give it great flexibility. The f/4.5 is sufficient for the new cameras with the high and relative noise-free ISOs.

Has anyone tried fitting this lens in the Nikon ...

Has anyone tried fitting this lens in the Nikon CL-M2 case? (The case description says it is primarily for 70-200mm or 300mm Nikons)
Asked by: Lowell
The CL-M2 is a nice sturdy case and easily holds the Nikon AF-S 80-400mm lens with lens hood and tri-pod collar, which is my largest lens. I've used it several times to carry this lens while a shorter zoom is attached to camera. There's not much extra length and I don't think it will hold lens with teleconverter, which I don't have.

question

will the Sigma APO 2x EX DG teleconverter work with this lensethank you James
Asked by: Anonymous
No it will not. Sigma (just as Nikon) teleconverters are only compatible with a specific list of lenses (there is a link in the overview of the product page on the converters showing the exact list of lenses). You could use Kenko brand teleconverters with this lens. See the link below for a recommended 2x converter from Kenko to use with this lens:http://bhpho.to/193ZSVW
