B+W's 40.5mm Close-up Lens NL5 Glass Filter is a filter for close-up photography.

With +5 diopters, the NL 5 serves for the seamless extension of the range provided by the NL 3 close-up lens on a 35mm main lens (up to appr. 1:3.5). If you can tolerate a small gap after the NL 2 close-up lens on a 50mm main lens (appr. 1:4.4 to 1:4), then you enter a little further into the macro range with the NL 5 instead of the NL 4 (up to appr. 1:2.6).

Note: B+W close-up filters (diopters) are a single element design.

Each glass surface is vacuum coated with one layer of Anti-Reflection coating. This single layer helps to prevent internal ghosting and reflections. It also improves light transmission from approximately 92% (uncoated glass) to over 98%.

This filter uses B+W's standard B+W F-Pro filter mount, which has a front accessory thread and is made of brass. Compared to the earlier standard mount introduced in 2001, the F-Pro mount has become thinner. Now it can be used with wide angle lenses, including most 24mm focal lengths on a full frame body, without vignetting. Another advantage of the F-Pro mount is it's modified retaining ring, which is no longer threaded in from the front, but holds the filter glass in place from the back. When removing a filter or lens hood that has been screwed on too tight to the filter, the retaining ring is not at risk of loosening.

Note: diopters are mounted in the older mount due to glass thickness.

40.5mm Close-up Lens NL5 Glass Filter is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 4.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Add closeup ability to a Nikon 1 System Thread this lens on the end of a 1 Nikkor lens for the cheapest, lightest, smallest way to add macro to a Nikon 1 system. I use it on a 30-110mm lens. It is a simple lens, so no color correction, but it is AR coated with one layer on each side. Fringing is not usually noticable. Since Nikon doesn't make a micro-nikkor specifically for this camera system, this is probably your best option and it is a good price. If it were an achromat, I would give it a 5.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Useful item for macro photography I find that +diopter filters, are a very useful way of extending the macro range of compact cameras, where these cameras have an easy way of mounting screw-in filters (and most of them don't). Many of these cameras have poor macro capability at the telephoto end of their zoom, and this filter helps overcome this deficiency. I am using this one with Nikon AW1 camera lenses. I find the +5 diopter filter a good practical choice for this application - its my limit for good picture quality. One criticism I have of this filter is the over large size of its carrying case. This is however typical - all manufacturers now do this. The case is much bigger than it needs to be. If I am carrying a small camera with small filters I want an efficiently packed filter. For this reason I repack these in old filter cases, which are smaller, or make my own.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from pretty good Using on a Nikon J1. No macro lens for this camera yet, and min. focus distance is not great for 10-30 or 30-100 lenses. This close up lens is tricky with very shallow DOF, but results are pretty sharp as long as your subject is small. Pretty good for the price though.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very good Solid build, and it works perfectly with my Nikon V1 + 30-110. Strongly suggested
