Vivitar Variable NDX Filter (40.5mm, 1 to 10-Stop)
Key Features
  • Variable 0.3 to 3.0 Optical Density
  • Optical Glass Construction
  • Greater Control Over Exposure Settings
The 40.5mm Vivitar Variable NDX Filter is a solid variable neutral density filter providing a reduction in light by 1 to 10-stops. The 0.3 to 3.0 (ND2-ND1000) density creates a darkening of the entire image, allowing you to photograph with a wider aperture or slower shutter speed than normally required. The degree of density is easily controlled by rotating the front filter ring, allowing you to previsualize the additional exposure length required. By slowing your exposure time or increasing your aperture, you are able to control depth of field and convey movement more easily. For easier, repeatable control over density settings, the front ring is also visually demarcated with dots that each represent one stop of neutral density.

Variable neutral density filter allows you to dial in differing amounts of density scene to scene.
0.3 to 3.0 ND filter darkens the image, allowing you to photograph with a longer shutter speed or wider aperture than normally required.
Providing a reduction in light by about 1 to 10 stops, this filter allows you to control depth of field and convey movement more easily.

Poor results for Long Exposure shots

I tried taking some daytime long exposure shots, as you may have deduced from the review's headline. Many of the shots I took had large, splotchy dark spots throughout. I've included some of the shots that I ended up with.

question

does this 40.5mm variable ndx filter have screw threads on the outside to accommodate a metal screw-in lens hood?
Asked by: Chester
The Vivitar 40.5mm Variable NDX Filter has 40.5mm front threads.Note it might be tough to use a threaded lens cap. The filter rotates so you need to hold it just so it does not when you try to screw in the lens cap.

I received this for my Sony 55mm lens and it does great however my lens cap doesn’t seem to fit the filter. Where can I get a cap that fits?
Asked by: Malaika
This is a high quality lens cap that you can use over this filter. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/807039-REG/Sensei_lc55_55mm_Center_Pinch_Snap_On.html

question

I bought this filter for my new Sony AX-53 after viewing the footage, I see a distinct pink cast. Thinking I may have an incorrect setting, I set the filter/protector option to ON.I shot more footage and there was not difference with the filter/protector setting on or off. I still have the pink tint. My video footage was taken in bright sunlight. It appears that I can remove the tint in post but I'd rather not have to do that. Am I missing something? Thank you.
Asked by: Bill
It could be a setting in the camera itself. The AX53 has different picture effects you may want to change. It also could be a white balance setting that is causing a pink cast. If you are still facing issues feel free to email us directly at [email protected] and we can help you further trouble shoot your camera.
