The Vivitar 55mm Variable NDX Filter is a solid variable neutral density filter providing a reduction in light by about 1 to 10 stops. The 0.3 to 3.0 (ND2-ND1000) density creates a darkening of the entire image, allowing you to photograph with a wider aperture or slower shutter speed than normally required. The degree of density is easily controlled by rotating the front filter ring, allowing you to previsualize the additional exposure length required. By slowing your exposure time or increasing your aperture, you are able to control depth of field and convey movement more easily. For easier, repeatable control over density settings, the front ring is also visually demarcated with dots that each represent one stop of neutral density.

Variable neutral density filter allows you to dial in differing amounts of density scene to scene.
0.3 to 3.0 ND filter darkens the image, allowing you to photograph with a longer shutter speed or wider aperture than normally required.
Providing a reduction in light by about 1 to 10 stops, this filter allows you to control depth of field and convey movement more easily.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works Great I used this filter a lot this past weekend and it worked great. I've been attaching it to my older manual Minolta lenses and shooting with my GH3. I only gave it 4 stars because I used it extensively for multiple shots that I stitched together in photoshop and noticed one where the density shifted a bit making the panoramic shot useless. I work as a photographer and videographer as a day job but wanted something I could use for fun without worrying if I wrecked it while taking photos with the family and this was perfect. Obviously not something you want on a professional shoot but perfect for your fun day trips.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from For the money...PHENOMENAL! I use my Sony Alpha almost 100% for Video Production. With this rig my main market is producing video for the web for business clients. Right now, my budget for buying new gear is about as close to zero as you can get. I have several shoots this end of Summer/Fall season that will require multiple outdoor locations. A variable ND filter quickly became a necessity. At just over $17, the Vivitar I bought was at the absolute bottom of any price range I had seen, so I didn't have high expectations. One of the reviews I saw when reearching what to get, featured a 77mm Tiffen for approx. $150 as one of their lower end filters. They tested a couple even lower priced ones from brands I hadn't heard of which were under $100...but they performed unsatisfactorily and were punted. The Tiffen performed well against filters costing in the upper hundreds. I figured with such a low price on the Vivitar, if there were at least a couple settings within its range that looked okay...I'd be ahead of the game. For what I do...this filter is one of the best investments I've ever made. I mainly shoot @ 60P. With this filter attached...I shoot ISO 100 in Aperature Priority and then dial the filter in until I have a shutter speed of 125. It's resulted in lots & lots of useable footage. I imagine at some time I might delve into a higher quality filter but for right now...I'm not even thinking about it. For all the great looking footage I've already aquired at such an outstanding value, I give this Vivitar 5 Stars.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Quality Low Price I bought this variable ND filter for better control of my photography. It has exceeded my expectations in waterfall and river photography. The low price attracted my attention but I was quite skeptical. I was not disappointed. I would recommend this filter to any DSLR photographer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from No Problems with this Filter I had been hesitant to purchase this filter because reviews of larger sizes complained of banding and vignetting. I am happy I took a chance with this one because I can see none of those problems when used with my camera. There were also complaints of color shift but I see nothing that cannot be easily tweaked in Lightroom.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good NDX while it lasted It worked awesome when I first got it but over time I noticed that after some rotation to a certain degree, I would see some purple smear directly in the middle then a big X, which means it couldn't be used at all. However durable and last longer than I expected.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Made it easy to capture the solar eclipse I used this filter to capture the August 21st, 2017 total solar eclipse from the viewpoint of Dubois, Wyoming. The simple concept of rotatable linear polarizers made the extraordinarily fast change in light level smooth and easy to correct for. Just by rotating the filter slightly I could go from direct sunlight to complete darkness levels without damaging the alignment of my camera. The image I captured is on the sony a6000 with a 1988 sigma 75-300mm beercan lens (which is typically found for $20 used).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Rounds out my EOS M kit Got this for my EOS M5. Now that the M series is a more capable camera, I thought it would be a good idea to upgrade my kit to include some essential filters: polarizer, variable ND, graduated ND, and a ring adapter so that I can use them on the 18-55mm, 11-22mm, and 55-200mm M lenses.
