Manfrotto MVH500AH overview

  • 1Description

The MVH500AH Fluid Video Head with Flat Base from Manfrotto is designed with a wide platform, optimal for HDSLR camera bodies. Smooth and precise, it has a maximum weight load of 11 lb and professional quality fluid cartridges on both its pan and tilt axes. It has a pre-set spring-loaded counterbalance of 5.3 lb, its lateral tilt range is -70°/+90° and it provides 360° panning rotation.

The side lock system on the MVH500AH allows the camera and sliding QR plate to click quickly into the head from above, instead of needing to be aligned and slid in from the back. This makes it easier and safer to mount your camera on this head. The head attaches to a tripod via a 3/8"-16 thread and includes a 500PLONG sliding balance plate with a captive 1/4"-20 tie-down screw and a 3/8"-16 adapter bushing. It also provides an Easy Link 3/8" connector on the side of the head to attach accessories such as a video monitor.

The MVH500AH is made from aluminum alloy, measures 3.74" high and provides a bubble level and precision control handle.

    Manfrotto MVH500AH reviews

MVH500AH Fluid Video Head with Flat Base is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 204.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very smooth, but needed adjustment This head, in general, is rather nice. Tilt action was butter smooth out of the box. Quick release plate and mechanism are nice and easy to use. However, pan action was horrendously stiff. It would actually shift the whole tripod, or would loosen the attachment plate from column. I popped off the pan screw cover, loosened the bolt, then re-tightened it with less torque. It now pans easily and smoothly. Another thing is I think the tilt balancing spring is too tight. Tilt it more than 20 degrees either way, even with a DSLR+70-200 f2.8, and you have to struggle to keep it there without tightening the knob. Though gotta say, with video, you rarely need large angle tilts. Still, I will try to find a way to loosen the spring.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from One of my favorite fluid heads One of my 2 favorite fluid heads by Manfrotto. The other being the 502. I own both and love both and can get smooth fluid shots with either one. Pros: It's smaller and lighter than the 502, which makes it easier to transport to shoots and easier to carry around on a tripod or monopod while working on shoots - especially when moving quickly and often. I like the convinience of the drop-in quick release plate instead of sliding it in. Cons: I wish it had drag/tension control like on the 502 - this one is either on or off. Honestly, if I had to pick one or other (the 500 or the 502), I couldn't. I love them both for different applications.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good Small Video Head This is a good small video head, but I really feel it's overpriced for what you get. The flat base is MUCH more versatile than the bowl bottom version and I really wish that Manfrotto made one universal unit with the bottom of the bowl version completely removeable - that would have made things a lot easier. It's a little heavy, but not bad at all. It's a versatile video head that pans well, is quiet and realtively smooth if you're using a DSLR. If you have a rig with a matte box or some added weight (audio recorder, monitor, etc) it doesn't perform as well and look to the 502-style heads instead. I needed both for different setups and use/needs.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A nice product with reasonable price I was looking for a monopod head for my dslr camera, but I wasn't sure what to buy for it. However, a salesperson at the tripod section helped me to find a right one for my dslr camera. He was very nice and seemed very knowable about the product. Speaking of this particular product, I'm very happy with its quality and price. In fact, there are many tripod or monopod heads in the store that are cheaper than this product, but I would strongly recommend this product because of its quality. I have a more expensive tripod head, but this is actually better one for me because it's easy to carry and smoother movement. This is the right one for dslr shooters out there!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Easy to use and Reliable I am a professional videographer and use this video head on all of my tripods, monopods, and slider. It is extremely convenient to have this interchangeability not matter what I am using. The pan tilt are extremely smooth and easy to use. It is a bit large but thats not really an issue. The only other downfall that I have found is that when using my 5D mark 3 on it, I have to remove the camera in order to change the battery because the locking screw is directly underneath the battery door moving the camera forward a little bit fixes this issue but keeps the camera from being centered which I don't like so much.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good, but needs some improvement This is a great head, but ... and I say but because I expect a little more attention to detail from Manfrotto. The head arrived way too tight on the pan, we had to losen the center screw and that's kind of a cop out way of handling the issue. That did losten it up a little, but it may have backed off on the stability slightly also. I understand it is not Adjustable drag on pan, but really it shouldn't cause the tripod to come off it's legs to operate it. WAY too tight ... this should be shipped ready to use. There is no head lock to the tripod base, there's a set screw in some of the bases but that's a PITA to get too and requires a tool. The head should have a pin you push down to prevent it from twisting on the tripod base. Especially if they are going to ship it so tight on the pan. It kept unscrewing. That said, once I got it operationally smooth and tightened up the screw from the bottom of the tripod mount things got functional. It's smooth overall and easy to use. I like it and will continue to put hours on it in the field and in the studio. Manfrotto just needs to pay a little more attention to quality control on this model and perhaps add that little head lock feature.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Fluid Head I now own three of these because of their decent pricing and great functionality. One for my monopod, one for my tripod, and one to quickly attach to my Edelkrone slider. This fluid head is moderately heavy, and unfortunately only comes with one, non-extendable pan arm. It has a unique top-loading QR system with a very durable twist lock. The biggest disappointment is that it doesn't have tension controls to adjust fluid drag, but at this cost, you learn and adapt. Ultimately, love this head. It accomplishes everything I need it to.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from great head for budget video makers. Great budget fluid head for video. pan and tilt is smooth, lockable but drag is not adjustable. The counterbalance is fixed at around 5-7lb, so you'll have quite some trouble if you are mounting a mirrorless camera (Sony A6300 for example) with a relatively small lens. If I mount a D500 with 70-200mm lens, the perfect counter balance can be achieved, and the setup stays stationary. This is perfect if you are converting your traditional photography tripod with flat base for some light video work. But I think it is probably best to invest in a fluid head that have at least some sort of adjustable counterbalance (down to 0 for smaller camera setups) as well as a half ball head for quick level adjustment.
