Manfrotto MVH500A overview

  • 1Description

The Manfrotto MVH500A Pro Fluid Video Head with 60mm Half Ball features a wide platform to support the HDSLR form factor, and a 60 mm half ball for quick leveling without adjusting the legs. The head supports a maximum weight load of 11 pounds and features professional quality fluid cartridges on both its pan and tilt axes for smooth camera moves. It has a pre-set spring-loaded counterbalance of 5.3 lb, supports equipment up to 11 pounds and features a tilt range of -70°/+90° and it provides 360° panning rotation.

The side lock system on the MVH500A allows the sliding QR plate to click into the head from above, instead of needing to be aligned and slid in from the back. This gives you the speed of a touch and go quick release with the balance adjustment capability of a sliding QR plate. The head is made from an aluminum alloy so it is durable and lightweight at under 2.5 pounds, and the built-in bubble level aids in quickly leveling the head. The included long sliding balance plate features both 1/4"-20 and 3/8"-16 camera tie-down screws. The MVH500A includes one pan bar, however the head features pan bar mounting rosettes on both sides of the head for operator comfort. A robust 3/8"-16 threaded Easy Link connector on the side of the head is for attaching available accessories.

    Manfrotto MVH500A reviews

MVH500A Pro Fluid Video Head with 60mm Half Ball is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 20.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Absolutely best bang for the buck! Coming from the land of clunky tripod heads that have no mercy at your hand movement, you can imagine that this was a huge leap getting the MVH500A. Together with a firm construction, you get an excellent and smart camera shoe attachement that click in instead of sliding like on the older models. The movement is just as the title states it - FLUID. I was finally able to get some reall good looking footage with it. Definitely a keeper for the price. If there's anything I miss on this head is the ability to adjust the horisontal angle of the camera, instead of trying to level everything from adjusting the tripod's legs.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Canon XA20 update re quick release plate The long quick release plate that comes with this head prevents battery removal on a Canon XA20 video camera. (The head is designed for HDSLR use.) I just got the short plate, and now I can get the battery off without removing the camera from the fluid head. HOWEVER, in order to position the plate so this can be done, I CANNOT use the pin that keeps the camera aligned with the head. There is only one tightened screw holding it in alignment. I hope this will work. Downgraded rating due to this issue, but it seems to be a good head.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Canon XA20 owners take notice! The head is supplied with the LONG plate, which makes it impossible to change the battery of an XA20 without removing the camera from the tripod, then unscrewing the plate from the camera. I don't like the thought of doing that in the field. I have ordered the short plate and assume that will eliminate the problem, but that's an extra expense!THE GOAL: A LIGHTWEIGHT SETUP ... This head with the XA20 (handle attached), a Manfrotto 535 carbon fiber video tripod, a Sennheiser shotgun mike with K6 powering module, an LCD hood, a lens hood, and an Auray shock mount weighs in at just 11-1/4 pounds. My old Bogen tripod and head alone weigh two pounds more than that!! I am pleased. The head works fine based on preliminary tests. Just what I expected. Just what I need ... except for the plate part.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect for dslr work I own 2 of these heads to use in tandem for multi-camera use. I also mount one head on a glider and the other on a tripod so I can 'sandwich' the glider between the tripod head and the camera very handy to quickly go from just a tripod to a glider during weddings & live events. This head has very smooth movement both vertically and horizontally, and the sliding base plate makes it easy to attach & remove my rig.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Smoother than Benro I was happy with Benro heads until I tried Manfrotto. There is a noticable difference. This has a much smoother pan and tilt. I use this with a 5D3 and 70D. Although it is a ball head, it can be used with any tripod or accessory that accepts a 3/8 thread. Solid build construction. Worth the money.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Ease of use and very smooth panning. Very easy to setup and use. I was able to easily hookup a Sony 4K camcorder to this video head and also a sony camera with an additional quick disconnect. The level is convenient and it is very smooth when panning.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Fluid Head Great smooth fluid head--perfect for DSLR and even Micro 4/3 cameras. Easy to configure and set up. I'm actually using this on an older Bogen/Manfrotto stand but it fits perfectly. Ease of adjustment and nice quick release plate. Nice that it has ability to add additional handle as well as additional hardware rack. Good head at a decent price.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from some snap crackle and no pop The MVH500 pro fluid video head we had on our tripod would not come to a level. So I called B &H and they were great in replacing it. They sent me a shipping label and I returned the product. They turned it around in minimal time and I have not had a problem since.
