The B+W 39mm Orange MRC 040M Filter can be used to increase image contrast when photographing using a film camera system with black-and-white film installed.

This filter's effect corresponds to that of a Wratten 16 filter. Wavelengths of visible light that are apparent as green, blue, and violet colors to the human eye are suppressed, while visible light associated with yellow, orange, and red colors are able to more easily pass though the B+W 39mm Orange MRC 040M Filter and into the lens it is mounted in front of. When photographing with this filter along with black-and-white film, green, blue, and violet-colored subjects within a scene are reproduced in dark shades of grey than if a filter was not used. Simultaneously, yellow, orange, and red subjects are rendered in light shades of grey.

When applied to black-and-white photography, the increased contrast provided by the B+W 39mm Orange MRC 040M Filter can result in dark skies with very defined clouds. Shades of green among foliage can be much more differentiated relative to skin tones, while the appearance of freckles and skin blemishes is reduced. Additionally, this filter can also minimize the presence of haze caused by the bluish cast of daylight.

To prevent internal ghosting and reflections, each glass surface includes eight layers of anti-reflection coating. This Multi-Resistant Coating (MRC) also offers greater protection to the filter substrate and helps it to stay clean for longer than with uncoated filters. B+W filters are constructed from Schott glass for increased optical clarity. This filter features an F-Pro brass filter ring for durability as well as jamming prevention.

39mm Orange MRC 040M Filter is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 15.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Makes the clouds pop. I use this with my 35mm Summicron and it really makes the clouds pop from the blue sky. I have used red in the past, but I thought it cranked up the contrast too much and destroyed shadow detail. Be sure to use it in on a mostly sunny day, with few clouds. I found that using it with a sky with a lot of clouds gave an uneven effect. I also try to avoid using it with Tri-X, since Tri-X already has a lot of contrast.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Helps me get it right in-camera! This is my 3rd B+W filter. The build quality is amazing, it attaches and detaches easily as well. This #16 Yellow-Orange filter is 90% attached to my Leica 35mm f2.0 ASPH lens. I shoot mostly Black and White, and this lens adds more kick to my images. It makes the blue sky darker and people's skin a lot lighter. Shooting film makes me do it right in the camera as oppose to relying on photoshop to get to the final vision I have in mind. And this filter is definitely a great tool for me to realize those images in my head.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great when paired with Leica MM246 and 50/2 APO This filter is a nice compromise between yellow and orange. Pairs well with MM246 monochrome sensor. Keeping it on most of the time to add just a little more character to the images. This is the only color filter I own.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect for Architecture and Landscapes I have pared down all of my B&W contrast filters to include just this one; a happy median between the yellow (often not dramatic enough) and the red (often too dramatic or causes a loss of resolution). B+W MRC are widely considered the best filters available, so that's good enough for me.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I can see clearly now I purchased this item to use with my Leica lenses for black and white photography. It's strong enough to cut through haze and add enough contrast without being overly dramatic.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from PERFECT filter , PERFECT seller B+W multicoated filters are among the best you can buy and this is no exception. They fit Leica M39 lenses perfectly. The brass construction will ensure that it won't get stuck. You definately get what you pay for. Shipping from B&H was flawless and fast as usual, a perfect combo for a happy customer. B&H has turned out to be my #1 choice. If you don't have their app check it out, very nice .

Rated 5 out of 5 by from durable orange filter for B&W photograph I'm using this filter to help an otherwise color-blind Leica M Monochrom with its B&W rendition of color, exploiting the capability of a red filter to reduce haze and accentuate clouds, foliage, & architecture. B+W filters consist of high quality glass (why put window glass in front of good glass?) in a brass mount (less likely to bind).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Quality product. You can't go wrong with B+W. I've not had issues with any of my other filters. And I think the colour filter series will be the same. Bought it for my Leica M246 Monochrom. And it works well. Wish they had updated the colour series to reflect the slim line XS filters. And gave it nano-coating instead of MRC. Only gripe!
