Hauppauge 1504 overview

  • 1Description

The HD Personal Video Recorder 2 Gaming Edition Plus from Hauppauge! allows you to record gameplay from your preferred gaming console in Full HD 1080p video. With HDMI input and output ports, a component video input port and one optical audio input (SPDIF), this personal video recorder supports the Xbox 360, the Playstation 3 as well as the PC. Also, the no-delay HDMI video passthrough allows you to record and play in real time.

Recorded video will automatically be compressed in the H.264 video format (often used in Blu-ray Discs). This personal video recorder can record videos at Full HD 1080p resolution and at 30 frames per second (fps). However, there are exceptions to this rule. In order to achieve Full HD 1080p at 30 fps, the content being recorded through HDMI must not use HDCP protection. Xbox 360 games can be recorded through HDMI at 1080p at 30fps, but Playstation 3 games use HDCP protection. For Playstation 3, you will have to use the included component video cable and as a result, will only be able to record in 1080i.

No-Delay HDMI Video Passthrough at Full HD 1080p
With a no-delay HDMI video passthrough, you'll be able to play in Full HD 1080p at 60 fps and record in Full HD 1080p at 30 fps at the same time. Also, recording doesn't slow down your computer because all the encoding is done on the personal video encoder itself. There is a catch, though. The source being recorded from HDMI must not use the HDCP standard. If it does, you will have to use the included component video cable and will only be able to record in 1080i
Port Authority
With an HDMI input port and an HDMI output port, you'll be able to play and record at the same time. Plus, HDMI supports both video and audio signals in a single cable so there's less hassle when it comes to cable management. There is also a component input port, which provides an alternative to HDMI, in case the content you want to record uses the HDCP standard. Along with the variety of inputs, take advantage of the optical audio (SPDIF) input for enhanced audio capabilities. The integrated USB port is used to connect this personal video recorder to your computer in order to save the recorded video onto its hard drive
ArcSoft ShowBiz
This personal video recorder comes bundled with the ArcSoft ShowBiz software. The ArcSoft ShowBiz software allows you to record video, edit recorded footage with the video editor and even upload videos straight to YouTube (Internet access required)
Top Mounted Record Button
The traditional way of recording gameplay or video content would have been by opening up ArcSoft ShowBiz on your connected computer and pressing Record. This personal video recorder also has a top-mounted Record button on the personal video recorder itself so you can record video directly from it. Just press the Record button once and ShowBiz will open on your computer and automatically start recording. If you want to stop recording, just press the top-mounted Record button again
StreamEez
With StreamEez you can create a Twitch or Ustream channel to live stream your video game play.

    Hauppauge 1504 reviews

HD Personal Video Recorder 2 Gaming Edition Plus is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 3.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Works well enough - Learning curve ahead I've used this for about a month now, both for recording PC desktop and games as well as the PS3 passthrough with component audio/video-in. Setup for the PC is not explained well in the manual and examples for such a setup is difficult to find online. The included manual is also out of date, as Hauppauge no longer recommends or installs ArcSoft Showbiz but continually references using it in the product documentation both in the box and on their website. The included installation CD will prompt you to download the newer Hauppauge Capture software. PC setup aside, the product is fairly easy to figure out once you're actually looking at the thing if you're familiar with audio/video hookups or a home theater system of any level. Basically it goes between everything. Anything normally connected to your TV or receiver is connected to the product instead, and from there is connected to your TV/Monitor. I think the difficulty in setup is above beginner and below intermediate. The performance is adequate. Does what it says, recording in 1920x1080 resolution at 60Hz refresh rate (recommend using VSYNC on PC games to avoid screen tearing in recordings). Videos are recorded in TS file format at up to 12 megabits (using I assume H.264 encoding, I'm fuzzy on the technical aspects). There is an option to export the TS recordings to MP4 format, but I have experienced trouble with audio/video sync issues. I'm not sure if it's my methods or my equipment. The Hauppauge Capture software is easy to understand and use. For editing options it only allows you to split video clips and trim from each end. The trims are not clean in my experience, and will often clip a few seconds too long or too short from the selected point in the preview window. Again, whether this is a fault of my recordings or the software is unknown. Using popular video editors like Vegas or Premier, I've had limited success with the TS files Hauppauge Capture outputs, and the MP4 conversions are troublesome with sync issues as well. I have not been successfully able to edit even short 10 minute clips outside the tools available in the Capture software, let alone upload them to any video hosting sites. The StreamEez software include in Hauppauge Capture does work fine once you've set up an account and channel with Livestream. I have no complaints about that software service. My bottom line is this product has some features that work great on paper, but my experience with it this past month has been frustrating and unreliable. Not being able to find the proper settings to successfully edit the clips the way I want is especially discouraging, and I continue to search for answers and improve my video editing knowledge and research on the issue. Setup is comparatively simple while the included software is frankly unstable. Given the option, I would choose another route for a passthrough video recording device that can record PC input as well as other devices. If I could find the right tools to manipulate the output files without issue, this would be a great, convenient product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Only Game in town with DD 5.1 recording First I am not a gamer, I use HDpvr2+(HDMI) as well as the model 1212 (component Only) to record from Cable and Directv. As far as I can tell from both online reviews and my own experience (I own the Elgato HD gamer and the Roxio HD gamer)the Hauppauge is the only personal pvr that is capable of encoding at Base, main, and High H264 as well as Dolby Digital 5.1 channel. I normally record at a setting of High level 4.1 ( 4.2 is also possible). I have read online reviews that seem to favor the Elgato or the Avermedia Live Gamer for Game recording because higher bit rates are possible. Perhaps because those machines are not capable of high 4.1 level with cabac encoding they need a greater bit rate to avoid artifacts. The HDPVR2+ records 1080p 30fps video extremely well. I am very happy with the results. The new capture software from hauppauge has a timer function so that you can set a timer to stop recording from 1 min to 23 hrs ( more than that causes file timing errors). Neither the Elgato or Roxio have that ability making the HDPVR2+ more user friendly for unattended recording of movies. There is room for improvement with respect to the compatibility of the .ts files produced by the PVR2+ (or perhaps its the fault of the capture software) at any rate I routinely use freeware Tsmuxer to remux the files to ensure they will be compatible with my Blu-Ray disk making software. I haven't tested the mp4 or m2ts files to see if they are more compatible. I hope this review proves helpful.
