Yamaha HS5 Overview

  • 1Description

The black HS5 Powered Studio Monitor from Yamaha is a bi-amplified monitor that is designed for accurate sound reproduction. It is capable of up to 70W of total output and features a 5-inch woofer and a 1-inch tweeter with waveguide that can produce frequencies up to 30kHz. The HS5 has both an XLR and 1/4" TRS input that accept either balanced or unbalanced signals for integration into a variety of studio setups.

Low Resonance Enclosure Design
HS Series cabinets are designed to eliminate unwanted resonance and increase the accuracy of sound reproduction to their extreme limit. The enclosures are constructed from a dense MDF with a damped acoustic response. HS Series engineers also employed a traditional three-way mitered-joint technique. Common to architectural design, this construction firmly anchors the corners of the enclosure to improve durability and eliminate unwanted resonance that can influence overall sound
Noise Reduction Technology
Speaker port design can greatly influence the clarity of overall sound. Often a vortex at the either end of the port can generate air vibrations inside of the port, causing unwanted noise. By adopting a noise reduction technology that incorporates an analysis of a visual representation of the sound, Yamaha's engineers are able to control and reduce the vortex. Through this analysis Yamaha has arrived at a port design that reduces noise up to 6dB
Controls and Connectivity
HS Series full-range models feature two response controls with settings that allow them to adapt to the surface acoustics of rooms of varying shape and size. ROOM CONTROL allows you to attenuate the unnatural, exaggerated low-end that can often occur when speakers are placed next to walls, while HIGH TRIM allows for more flexible control of high frequency response. For inputs, HS full-range speakers can accommodate a range of balanced and unbalanced sources such as mixers, keyboards and audio interfaces with XLR and TRS phone jacks

    Yamaha HS5 Reviews

HS5 Powered Studio Monitor (Single, Black) is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 11.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Better then expected I had read a lot of reviews about these and the lack of bass response. I really like the tone of these. A flat response with a very pro monitor mid range ie tone. Not sure how to discribe other then the tone is Very clean and crisp. I was thinking I would get the sub woofer as these are not only for mixing audio for my pro video projects but also for my own entertainment system. In my small room the bass is plenty. I may or may not buy the sub. When I crank it up I do notice the high end and high end mid range get a little brash. In my small room there is not a need to really do that. I’m very happy and it truly feels like a pro product, unlike many of the others I checked out in this league.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Better Than Expected!!! I thought these were a little pricey for a set of 5 reference monitors but they are actually much better than I thought. You can hear every single little detail, and they're loud as hell for their small size. Look, I'm not gonna drone on with technical specs or tell you how these speakers will one day cure cancer. Just buy them and you'll see what I mean. They're worth every penny.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A pleased customer! I purchased these speakers a few weeks ago, on the recommendation of a friend and music producer, for my pre-production studio. They are the perfect size for me and I must say that the quality and sound is amazing. I don't know why I didn't get rid of the old speakers and purchase these a long time ago. They arrived the next day after I ordered them online. This was great because I didn't have to wait days for them. If I would have ordered them thru any other retailer like guitar center or musicians friend it probably would have taken longer for the delivery. I am very pleased with B&H's delivery process, and for the price you can't beat the quality and sound. I love, love, love them!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Clean! For mixing these are hard to beat. Clean. Every vocal. Every nuance. Every instrument. If it's clean on these speakers it will be great on whatever folks are listening on...even the non-discerning. And if you want to rock out with them, you can equalize and turn the volume up. Can't imagine a better set of speakers for a small room mix.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great monitors for their price point If you're in the market for something to get your studio started or you're not doing super hi-fi stuff, you really can't get a better entry into the world of studio monitors. Far more bang for the buck than competing 5 monitors.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from For the price this is a very good deal I love these loudspeakers, the sound is clean and the top toner is really moving out of the speakers. It's the perfect home speaker, but I do not want to use them professionally because they are missing a little bass, but you could add a sub and that will easy be fixed.

    question

Can you use these with a regular LED flat screen tv for watching movies, etc?
    Asked by: Anonymous
Yes, I use these monitors connected to my LED TV. You will need the right cable to connect: RCA on one end and 1/4 on the other. I prefer real studio monitors like this for connecting to my TV over home theater speakers.

    question

What size speaker isolation pad fits this speaker best? It looks like the Small Size Auray will just fit it...but should there be some extra wiggle room?
    Asked by: Anonymous
When I bought the HS5's B&H had a deal that included the MEDIUM Auray pads ( 10.25 x 15 ). They are bigger than the speaker, but work great. If I remember correctly, the smaller pads would have been an exact fit, but they were not the ones included in the deal. Great speakers, by the way.
