Korg Volca Beats Overview

The Volca Beats from Korg is an analog rhythm machine featuring powerful drum sounds and an Electribe-style loop sequencer. Additionally, its Sync in and out ports allow clock sync of multiple instruments from the Volca series as well as Korg's Monotribe. It also has a MIDI input for note entry, as well as external sync and control from your DAW. The built-in speaker and optional battery power allow you to take the Volca Beats anywhere.

The Volca Beats' real analog drum sounds were created with reference to classic rhythm machines. The user interface features individual knobs for each of six analog parameters. The PCM sound engine further expands the possibilities.

The Electribe-style 16-step sequencer features eight memory patches. Its Stutter function generates repeated triggers that dramatically change the sequence. The Active Step function generates new drum lines by removing or inserting steps. The Step Jump function instantly plays only the step you're pressing for on-the-fly improvisation and remixing.

Sync In and Out
Using the sync jack, you can synchronize playback with multiple Volcas or with a Monotribe. You can also use the "SyncKontrol" iPhone app to wirelessly control tap tempo, swing settings, and synchronized playback with iOS music apps via WIST.
MIDI Input
The MIDI input connector allows you to synchronize Volca Beats with other devices, as well as play it from any MIDI keyboard. You can also send note messages from your DAW and use the Volca as an analog sound module.

Korg Volca Beats Reviews

So great

I had a Volca Drum and the possibilities for experimentation were endless but it was a real struggle to get normal, natural drum (machine) sounds out of it. I ended up selling it and got this maybe a month later. It's exactly what I wanted. The snare sound is notoriously lacking and it's missing per-beat level/velocity but overall, it's a great tool to throw together a quick drum beat. I've really had a lot of fun playing with it.

Volca Beats, vintage sounds in small package.

This is a fun drum machine. It is somewhat limited, but for me almost perfect. Negatives are a somewhat limited sonic range. It sounds like a vintage drum machine. To me that is great, but if you want more kits you want the sample. No midi out means your beats are trapped on the machine and the only way out is analog recording. There is no swing or accent! kind of a bummer. Snare isn't the best... Positives are its a blast to curl up on the couch and make beats. It seems awkward at first but once you play with it for awhile the control layout makes sense. Built in speaker is nice but you are going to want headphones. Syncs easily with other volcas. Get this if you are after vintage drum machine sounds in a compact package. Limited I/O and no song mode somewhat reduces its usefulness in a studio or live performance. Great for little jam sessions on the go.

Lots of [analog] bang for your buck here... pretty easy to get up and going, although I have noticed a few quirks (e.g. part level not saving, etc.). But overall the sound and functionality are great and it runs on batteries which is even cooler.

Big analog sound, little box

Yes, it sounds amazing. The snare is not the 808 snare, but you can get some really cool sounds out of it, especially with the stutter. I usually layer it with the clap, which you can tune via PCM, and it sounds outstanding, so I am not modding it. Don't get bogged down in snaresville, this thing has a huge kick drum, stutter feature, amazing step jumping, a ribbon controller, it syncs to your DAW's external clock, and it has live motion and stutter recording. Believe me when I say it's worth every penny, even if you end up using a different drum machine, this thing is a mini beast and so fun!

What I needed

Quick, easy, small drum sequencer with great features. The stutter knobs make this unit really cool. Just twist to add either a simple delay, or change the groove entirely. The controls over kick snare tom and hat are intuitive and quick. Can create significant feel changes very easily. Definitely see myself using this often to demo grooves, and layer into larger arrangements.

My first drum machine!

I love it! I specifically decided to go with the Volca Beats for three reasons - to mess with analog, to get used to a sequencer, and of course the price! Anything in the same price range or cheaper seems to be mostly preset grooves or lack a sequencer. If I ever decide to upgrade, then there are lots of options and features to choose from. But for starting out and for the price, it’s great. The volume output for everything but the kick is pretty low, so even though I do jam along with it with my guitar and keyboard, eventually I want to buy a pedal to boost the volume of it. I use it everyday though, and get creative to work around the limitations, so if you are open minded and starting out in the world of drum machines, I would highly recommend this one.
