XUME 82mm Lens Adapter
Key Features
  • Enables Quick & Secure Filter Attachment
  • Metal Ring with Integrated Magnets
  • Used in Combination with Filter Holder
  • Eliminates Filter Jamming
The Xume 82mm Lens Adapter is a precision-machined metal ring that attaches to a lens with a 82mm-diameter filter thread to provide instant and secure attachment of filters when Xume Filter Holders are installed. This adapter ring incorporates NdFeB rare Earth magnets into its design to enable a strong, but easy to remove, connection between the lens adapter and filter holder. By using quick-to-remove magnets to attach filters, changing of filters can occur much more quickly and eliminates the chance of cross-threading or jamming when installing or removing filters. The ring is approximately the same thickness as most step-rings and will not cause vignetting on most lenses with focal lengths as wide as 24mm (35mm equivalent). Over-the-lens type lens hoods are still compatible when Xume Adapters and Holders are in place and are recommended during use to provide an even more assured connection if working in busy environments.

XUME XLA Overview

Traditional snap-on lens caps are not directly compatible with Xume lens adapters. To protect the front element of a lens that is not in use, but has a Xume lens adapter installed on it, a Xume filter holder can be first connected to a snap-on lens cap. The combination of a snap-on lens cap and a Xume filter holder can then be placed over the lens instead of a filter with a Xume filter holder. Alternatively, a Xume lens cap designed to cover a correspondingly-sized Xume lens adapter may be used instead.

Works

Works almost too well. Make sure you also get a high quality (not plastic) filter wrench if you ever want to take it off. The problem may be unavoidable with this kind of product. Very good build quality however and would recommend it.

Lens adapter gets stuck with filter

If you have a UV filter already attached to your lens, take it out. The Xume filter adapter can easily get stuck and it will be extremely dificult to separate the two.

Non-existent Customer Service. Magnet component fell off.

The magnet component fell off the adaptor after 4 months of regular usage. Sent the defective unit to the return address detailed in their customer service FAQ. No word after weeks. Sent an inquiry via email, rep asked where I sent it, etc. Sent reply along with my USPS receipt, B&H invoice, etc. No response.

Revised review, may cause vignetting, test first.

This is a revision to my previous review and is applicable to my Sony 24-70mm, f/2.8 GM lens. This lens uses 82 mm diameter filters. This product requires that you insert both a lens adapter and a filter adapter between your lens and your filter. This will move your filter out approximately 8 mm. In my case that leads to vignetting when using this particular lens wide open. Even without a filter, just the lens adapter and filter adapter alone will cause vignetting with my lens at focal lengths between 24 and 30 mm. My worst case is when I use my Hoya variable neutral density filter, where the range between 24 and 35 mm has noticeable vignetting. My other filters are somewhere in between. If you shoot using a 16:9 aspect ratio and use the middle of the field you will not see the corners or the vignetting. I have decided this complication more than nullifies the added convenience of this product. Too bad. To test if your lens would be affected just wrap a piece of paper around your lens. If that paper tube can extend beyond the lens by 15 mm and you don't see vignetting then you will not have the problem I am seeing.

Great for filter swap, but it interferes with the lens cap

I bought the 82mm version. It makes filter changes easy and safe. I get nervous about the threads binding, which seems worse for the larger diameters. The filter is held securely. Your lens cap will not stick on securely with the lens adapter installed. You can add a filter adapter to the lens cap so that it adapts to the lens adapter or you can always leave a filter on. The lens cap does connect securely to the filter. But I think UV filters can only degrade the optics so there are many times I have no filter on. I suggest you buy an additional filter adapter for your lens cap. You have two choices: (1) leave the lens adapter on and remove the filter adapter from the lens cap when attaching the cap to the filter, or (2) remove the lens adapter to cap the lens with no filter and add it back on when you use a filter. I prefer (1) because it does not involve screwing and unscrewing threads. I will need to develop a way not to lose the filter adapter when I take it off the lens cap. The FAQs on the Xume web site discuss this and Xume sells a magnetically attaching lens cap for 77mm diameter. It only attaches to the lens adapter, not a filter. I product idea for Xume would be a lens cap that attached both with and without the lens adapter. Maybe using a larger diameter and a compression attachment would work without interfering with the magnetic attachment.

I don't know any similar adapter systems but they are worth it especially if you're a solo shooter
