Giottos YTL 8354 overview

  • 1Description

The Giottos Pro Series 8354 Carbon Fiber YTL Silk Road Tripod rises to a maximum height of 67.3" and weighs in at only 3.1 lb while supporting up to 11.1 lb. Eight layer carbon fiber construction maximizes its strength-to weight ratio. But that's just the basics. It has a center column with a unique cantilevered design that allows it to tilt 180 degrees in its yoke and rotate 360 degrees. It has a ballast hook at the bottom to add stabilizing weights. Thanks to the combination of the column and the 8354's 3 position leg spreading feature, you're able to shoot as low as 7.0" from the ground. The 4 leg sections offer a padded first section, quick lever locks, and an option to install spiked feet. The lowest leg has 8 calibration marks at 2.0" intervals to make precise leveling easy.

Note: This listing is for tripod legs only. Your choice of tripod head is available for separate purchase. However, the included short column with patented AutoSafety Lock can be used for limited 2-way control even when not using a head.

    Giottos YTL 8354 reviews

Pro Series 8354 Carbon Fiber YTL Silk Road Tripod is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 3.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good tripod, but could be better The Giottos 8354 Silk Road tripod has some good points. The Y-shaped center column lets it fold down to a very compact size (most other tripods in its range are a good inch or more wider when folded), and the tilting is versatile for macro work and other special circumstances. The tripod is lightweight, has foam-rubber grips on the legs, and the flip-lock levers allow quick setup and take-down. The platform for the head has set-screws to secure whatever head you use. Unfortunately, it has a few design flaws that keep it from being great. With four-section legs, it tends to wobble a bit when twisted. This can be mitigated somewhat by not fully extending the lowermost sections, but then you lose some height (and leveling becomes a problem). Moreover, at the first stage of leg spread, the legs don't really spread wide enough to be stable (I've had it blow over on windy days). Sure, you can spread them to the next-wider stage, but this is really too wide (and low) for comfortable use. The tripod has no bubble-level on the spider or head platform, which makes it hard to level for panorama shots. The leg section flip-locks are a bit loose out-of-the-box and need to be tightened (they also loosten up with use). And the lock levers for the leg spreading are kind of fiddly to work with. I could overlook or work around the last few issues, but the lack of stability is a major concern for a tripod. If Giottos were to address the issues with the legs, they would have a winner, but until then, it's far from ideal.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works for Me! I have only used this new tripod for a week on a photography trip in Maine. It got carted around for five days, unfolded, folded and used with 24-200 an 150-600 lenses mounted on a Canon 60D with a RRS ball head. The tripod performed well and make me look forward to using it more. It handled the weight of a heavier ball head and large lens pretty well. It folds tight, smaller than most, is quick to set up and take down, The level helps get setup right and fast. To me it is a pretty solid unit for it's weight. Because of it's compact length and folded diameter. it packs very well. Like other reviews, I wish the leg diameter in the most upright position would spread 9-12 inches more in diameter. With only two of the three leg sections extended, one has to be careful that it is placed in a stable place. The second position is too wide for stand up photo taking and the tripod is a little springy when extended out like that. As a former tool & die maker, it looks to me to be a well made, reasonably well thought out tripod. I like it, would recommend it to friends and am pleased with my purchase.
