The Xume 82mm Lens Adapter and Filter Holder Pro Kit from B&H includes two lens adapters and four filter holders to provide quick and easy attachment and removal of four different filters on two separate lenses. The Xume Lens Adapter and Filter Holder system revolves around both filters and lens' filter rings receiving precision-machined metal rings and then utilizing NdFeB rare Earth magnets to facilitate a secure, but easy to remove, connection between the filter and lens. By using a magnetized, non-threaded connection, the chance of cross-threading or jamming filters onto the lens is eliminated and time is saved when swapping filters.

  • 2 x XUME 82mm Lens Adapter

The Xume 82mm Lens Adapter is a precision-machined metal ring that attaches to a lens with a 82mm-diameter filter thread to provide instant and secure attachment of filters when Xume Filter Holders are installed. This adapter ring incorporates NdFeB rare Earth magnets into its design to enable a strong, but easy to remove, connection between the lens adapter and filter holder. By using quick-to-remove magnets to attach filters, changing of filters can occur much more quickly and eliminates the chance of cross-threading or jamming when installing or removing filters. The ring is approximately the same thickness as most step-rings and will not cause vignetting on most lenses with focal lengths as wide as 24mm (35mm equivalent). Over-the-lens type lens hoods are still compatible when Xume Adapters and Holders are in place and are recommended during use to provide an even more assured connection if working in busy environments.

Traditional snap-on lens caps are not directly compatible with Xume lens adapters. To protect the front element of a lens that is not in use, but has a Xume lens adapter installed on it, a Xume filter holder can be first connected to a snap-on lens cap. The combination of a snap-on lens cap and a Xume filter holder can then be placed over the lens instead of a filter with a Xume filter holder. Alternatively, a Xume lens cap designed to cover a correspondingly-sized Xume lens adapter may be used instead.

  • 4 x XUME 82mm Filter Holder

The Xume 82mm Filter Holder is a precision-machined metal ring that attaches to a 82mm circular screw-in filter to provide instant and secure attachment to lenses when a Xume Lens Adapter is installed. NdFeB rare Earth magnets are integrated within lens adapters to attach to the filter holder to and provide a strong, but easy to remove, connection that is suitable for use with oft-used filters. By using quick-to-remove magnets to attach filters, changing of filters can occur much more quickly and eliminates the chance of cross-threading or jamming when installing or removing filters. 82mm Lens Adapter and Filter Holder Pro Kit is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 3.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from 3 suggestions for XUME This is a GREAT idea in concept, and it does work. I commend the company for executing on it and getting this far. Our use: we offer a kit rental option and occasionally use (as opposed to a more traditional matte box system) a full set of 82mm ND and Pola outfitted with these adapters--a total of 16 Xume peices needed to do this, for 4 lenses, btw. However, there's issues with them, some confusion to what you need, and the pro kit likely isn't enough pieces to cover you. Overall, they on the right track but the products could use some big improvements. 1) The Lens Cap Debacle I'm sure Xume gets this feedback way more than anything else. Here's what you don't know before buying and what to expect: You get your lens adapter, and filter holder, right? Great. You put them on both sides, works great. You put away your filter, go to put your lens cap back on--and doh! It doesn't fit anymore! See picture Exhibit A. Here's what you have to account for: 1a) If your lens is 82mm, you'll need an extra filter holder just to put on your lens cap--1 for each lens, that permanently stays with each lens cap. 1b) If your stepping up your lens (not 82mm) you'll also need to buy a new 82mm lens cap, 1 for each lens. Otherwise, you'll have to unscrew the lens adapter just to cap your lens, which totally defeats the purpose of these magnetic filters, yeah? Or, you can leave a filter on at all times (because your filter does continue threads for stacing which means your lens cap fits onto the filter). But, if you have more than one lens, this isn't a realistic option--you want all your filters in one spot ready to go, not scattered across various lenses that aren't in use. Additionally, the lens cap with a magnetic filter on is weird--half the time you uncap it normally out of habit, and anyone else on your team will do the same. To keep the filter holder with it, you need to ignore the squeeze releases on the cap and pull it off. I ended up buying new caps with the least noticeable and smallest squeeze releases, but it's still an issue. Why Xume didn't think this through better, I'm not sure. It seems like a easily avoidable design flaw--couldn't they just put a tiny lip on the outer adapter, so that the original cap can grip it? Also, since most of us have to buy new caps anyway, Xume should expand their making of magnetic lens caps (they only make a 77mm one at the moment) and make it clear you need it, selling it as part of the kits. Make it so that if you get a lens adapter, you get a cap; easy as that. 2) Offer a Pro Line That Puts Quality First Both the adapters and the filter holders, attach to the lens and filters, with normal threads. That's fine, but it turns out, the Xume peices behave a lot like those really cheap, low-end step up rings. That is, they bind up, are often hard to get on and off, etc. On top of it, because probably the magnetics are inside, they are made of cheap plastic and actually bend quite easily. You can imagine, this doesn't bode well for a bind up and trying to get it off of something. I had one get absolutely stuck to a high end brass step up ring, and when finally resorting to pliers to get them to spin, the Xume instead just literally broke apart and I had to pull it piece by piece from the step up ring. (pic Exhibit B) Similar to Sensei, Xume should offer a top quality line of the same products, even if it's 2-4X times the cost, that isn't plastic and doesn't bend and is designed for the threads to last and work reliably. Installing them once permanently on everything you own is okay, but probably not the reality for many buyers, especially when it comes to step up rings which may need to be used for other things, on different setups, etc. 3) Make Magnetic Step Up Rings It doesn't make sense to have 3-4 sets of 7 ND filters for every size of lens you own. It does make sense to just step up each lens to 82mm and only have that 1 set of NDs and other filters. So, if you're putting a Xume filter on a 70-200 for example as pictured, this means to put a 82mm ND on you'll have 4 parts: 77mm to 82mm, 82mm xume for lens side, 82mm xume on filter, and 82mm filter. Why not save a ring and just build the magnetics directly into the step up filter? I'd reach for that first from Xume if it was offered, and I'd imagine they could offer them cheaper than buying both parts cost combined. As you get wider on your focal range, having 1 less ring will make the difference between a vignette issue and not, as well. Recap) I will say I haven't had the problem I was worried about and read about, where you could easily accidently brush a filter off and lose it. Maybe I've just been careful about it. I'd say in normal shooting conditions, this isn't a deal breaking concern, but obviously something to be aware of and careful about. The 'magnetic adapted' caps don't even come off in the camera bag, for example. If Xume could work on the above 3 issues in a version two, this system would be rock solid and feel professional. For now, due to some oversight and cheapness, it's a fun idea that's not 100% executed. I hope they take this feedback into consideration and make a good product great.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Zume quick change filter holders I was skeptical about these at first, but a member of my local PPA chapter gave them a glowing thumbs up. I use them on all of my ND filters so I can make quick changes. No more cross threading of filters as well. The only problems I have encountered is a slight vignetting at wide fov's (cured by zooming in slightly) and unfortunately my Canon lens caps will not stay on with the lens adapter. I did, however, order an additional filter holder to use with the lens cap. Now the cap/filter holder combo will stick to the lens adapter. And yes, the magnet in the adapter is very strong. Just don't bang the filter holder hard against a wall or rock and the filter should hold tight!
