ZEISS 32mm f/1.8 overview

  • 1Description

The ZEISS Touit 32mm f/1.8 Lens (Sony E-Mount) is a normal length prime lens designed specifically for use on APS-C-sized image sensors, and as such provides a 35mm-equivalent focal length of 48mm. This lens is compatible with Sony E mirrorless cameras and supports all camera functions, including autofocus and exposure control.

The Planar design of this lens is a highly successful optical construction that inherently corrects for most aberrations and distortion while offering high overall sharpness and image clarity. Additionally, Carl ZEISS T* anti-reflective coatings have been applied to all lens surfaces to reduce reflections, lens flare, and ghosting to produce imagery with high contrast and color fidelity.

The physical construction of the lens features a metal lens barrel with rubberized control rings for high precision when working with manual focus. When working in autofocus modes, the focusing system of the lens offers smooth and reliable performance with high precision and control. A rigid metal bayonet mount ensures accurate alignment and a nearly circular nine-blade aperture works to produce an aesthetic out-of-focus highlight quality.

Supports Phase-Detection and Fast Hybrid AF
This lens has been updated with Version 02 firmware and supports the use of phase-detection AF and Fast Hybrid autofocus systems on Sony E-mount cameras.
Sony E Compatibility
Designed for use on Sony E-mount APS-C mirrorless cameras and provides a 35mm-equivalent focal length of 48mm. The lens offers complete compatibility with all camera functions, including accurate autofocus and exposure control. It features a wide f/1.8 maximum aperture that aids in low-light shooting as well as greater control over the focus plane for shallow depth of field and selective focus applications.
Optical Design
This lens features a Planar optical design that works to eliminate a variety of aberrations and distortions in order to produce an image with high clarity and sharpness. A Carl ZEISS T* anti-reflective coating has been applied to each lens surface to help minimize surface reflections in order to improve light transmission and provide greater image contrast and color fidelity.
Physical Design
The lens features a rigid, durable, yet lightweight, metal barrel with rubberized control rings to offer improved handling abilities. A metal bayonet mount aids in consistency and an ensured connection between the camera and lens. Additionally, a nine-blade, nearly circular aperture is used to smoothly render out-of-focus highlights.

    ZEISS 32mm f/1.8 reviews

    Touit 32mm f/1.8 Lens (Sony E-Mount) is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 63.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very Nice I use this as my normal lens on my NEX-7. The optical quality is great-very sharp and bright across the frame. The build quality is very good, but light. The DC focusing motor is much louder than those in the Sony or Sigma lenses, which is very apparent because the Sony AF system constantly hunts focus. You get used to it though. Zeiss was very responsive when I queried them about it and suggested setting the AF/MF button to toggle and setting the focus mode to manual. That way, when you need AF, you just toggle it on. This feature and the very high price is why I give the lens a 4 star rating. Optically though, it is a champ.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from WELL..., ALMOST I would rate 4.5 stars if it were possible. I've had this for a week and made three outings with NEX 7, one on a dreary, rainy day, two in bright sun. Resolution is truly excellent across the entire field of the image--but there is some noticeable barrel distortion--a disappointment since I shoot a lot of buildings and structured subjects--unlike the 24mm which is just about perfect. As other reviews have said, the AF is a bit dodgy, i.e. in and out, and noisy, but that doesn't bother me. It is great because of the resolution across the field and into the corners..., but it should be perfect..., and it isn't.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Honest Sharper than the FE 35mm sony zeiss offering when used on the a6000. Round aperture blades are also nicer than the straight blades on the Sony Zeiss FE 35mm. Plastic lens hood is sturdy enough. AF is not as noisy as people say online. Focus is quick enough for children and pets. If you are doing video, you should be using a separate recording device anyways. MF is by wire, but no instant overide when you grab the focus ring. Doesn't come with a carrying pouch, but no big deal since it's the one Lens that is permanently attached to my a6000 anyways. There is noticible CA wide open all the way up to f4 in high contrast areas. Phase One's Sony software does a good job cleaning it up. A must have for a6000 still shooters.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good solid lens with updated firmware I was trying to decide between this lens, the SEL35F18 and the FE 35F28. I was definitely concerned about the noise and slow auto focus that I read in DP Review even though people said post firmware update it was ok. The other 2 lenses were great and cost was really the only thing that made me hold off on the FE 35. I can say now after taking many photos that I am happy with this lens. I use it for family pics and it stays on my A6000 as the primary lens. The photos look sharp and AF speed is solid. I don't plan on using it for recordings video. I will say this though, if you plan on going to FF, I would recommend getting the 35MM 2.8. While it is slightly more expensive you can at least share it with the A7. Either way though great lens and good value.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing images from such a small lens! I just received my new Zeiss 32mm f1.8 and all I have to say is that it is an amazing lens! The colors come out very sharp along with a nice smooth and silky bokeh. Very little post in the sample photo that I provided. I used it on my Sony A7ii and it focuses very fast. Great small, compact size to carry around as a street lens for both the A7ii and A6000. The only thing I wish they had updated was the lens hood - make them metal like the Zeiss Loxia line of lenses. But other than that, it still does the job and is a great walk-around lens for everyday use.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Outstanding optical, so-and-so autofocus The lens has great optics - among the best I've had so far on my Nex 7. However, the autofocus implementation is not that great. The lens is NOT using and ultrasonic motor - it is noisy and upon start-up and shutdown it even vibrates a bit. Usually I do not subtract points for this, but the lens is expensive enough to grant an ultrasonic motor. Also, considering the bothering feature of all the Nex cameras - they autificus by themselves at random time intervals - the noisy autofocus is more bothersome than it should be otherwise...

Rated 3 out of 5 by from great optics/hunting for focus Great design and build quality paired with great optics. The AF is slow and lots of hunting. Typical for a third party lens, I'm told. If you want fast AF without hunting go with the Sony 35mm. It has OSS and much faster silent focusing without hunting at half the price. The incremental gain in sharpness you get with the Zeiss is not worth it for me.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Outstanding lens only wish I bought it sooner! I have this lens mounted on my Sony A 6000. I did have the upgrade to the sony camera downloaded and installed. The lens had the corresponding up grade to their lens. (B&H clearly advised on there web that this was the upgraded lens...Thanks B&H.). I ride over 10,000 miles a year on my motorcycles and always have my camera along. The quality of shots clarity, color rendition and focus accuracy has measurably improved after purchasing the Zeiss lens. I would buy it again in a heartbeat. I now get the most out of this camera in sharpness and color reproduction.
