ZEISS Touit 12mm f/2.8 Overview

Affording an especially broad, 18mm equivalent field of view, the FUJIFILM X-mount Touit 12mm f/2.8 from ZEISS is a prime wide-angle lens well-suited for landscape, architecture, and interior shooting. A sophisticated Distagon optical design includes two aspherical elements and three low dispersion elements, which help to control a variety of aberrations, distortion, and color fringing in order to produce sharp, well-corrected imagery. Wide-angle prime is designed for APS-C-format FUJIFILM X-mount mirrorless cameras and provides an 18mm equivalent focal length.
Bright f/2.8 maximum aperture suits working in available-light conditions and is also ideal for astrophotography use.
Distagon optical concept affords high sharpness, well-corrected image quality from edge-to-edge, and very low field curvature.
The optical design utilizes three anomalous partial dispersion elements to reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations for increased clarity and color fidelity.
Two aspherical elements control distortion and spherical aberrations in order to produce greater sharpness and more accurate rendering.
ZEISS T* anti-reflective coating has been applied to each lens surface to help minimize reflections and provide greater contrast and color fidelity.
Floating elements system helps to maintain consistent image quality throughout the entire focusing range, from 7.1" to infinity.
DC autofocus motor delivers quick and quiet focusing performance to suit both stills and video shooting applications.

Zeiss does it right

I've owned numerous Zeiss lenses over the years and they have always been stellar. I might have given this 4.5 because the aperture ring isn't stiff enough and will sometimes move but it's optically fabulous. At normal working distances it's very good/excellent right to the corners from f4.0-11.0. Center is razor sharp throughout. Unless you're doing big enlargements (which I do) it's good wide open too. I shoot full time for my living so my gear is important. Not sure how it would be wide open in the corners for something like astrophotography. I don't use it for that. It's beautiful aesthetically, especially with the matched hood. Additionally I had to give it back a half star for it's performance shooting infrared. That's a niche thing but I shoot a lot of infrared. I use it on Fuji bodies (X-T5) and Fuji doesn't have much in ultra wide that is both good with standard photography AND infrared.

Audible focus motor

An excellent lens for image quality. The deal-breaker for me was the quite audible focus motor. Quiet enough for landscapes and outdoor use, but I work in extremely restrictive environments where TOTAL SILENCE is absolutely necessary and maintained, where even very quiet noises such those as the Touit focusing motor produces can be heard as clearly as a gunshot. For this reason I returned the lens. Bummer, because it is otherwise a terrific piece of kit!

Does not live up to zeiss legacy

I am a long time Zeiss enthusiast and professional user. The entire touit series does not live up the the historical standard set by Zeiss. My 12mm 2.8 Zeiss lens seized its aperture after less than a year of use. When I sent it in the repair service providers falsely claim it’s an impact damage and wouldn’t repair it under warranty. It costs half the price of a new lens to get repaired. I find this unacceptable and will not be paying for the repair. The modern lenses Zeiss is putting out are not of the quality they once were. If minor use is going to put a lens like this into the repair shop I will no longer be a customer of their new products

Absolutely superb

A joy to use and superb results. Solid build quality. Zeiss optics render crisp color and sharp details. Optically corrected with very low distortion. Far better than the Fuji 8-16mm which shows massive distortion requiring destructive digital correction in camera or in post process.

After using for 5 years, still loving it!

Super sharp ultra-wide lens with great contrast and color! Have made many images with it over 5 years and it is my go to lens for interiors.

ZEISS Touit 12mm f/2.8 Objektvs priek FUJIFILM X

I really like the lens. Good resolution, good color reproduction. A small flaw is very easy to move the diaphragm ring, be careful not to accidentally change the diaphragm.

Unacceptably Soft

Wanted to love this lens as the focal length is useful for my landscape and architectural photography, and also because of my trust in the Zeiss brand. But after many simple home focus tests at various scenes and apertures, this lens was soft throughout and couldn't even compete in IQ when compared with Fuji's 16mm/2.8 at equivalent crop sizes. It's going back to B&H for a refund. I'll likely look at Fuji's 10-24 zoom as a more appropriate option.
