The ORTF Surround Outdoor Set from Schoeps includes all the components you need for an ORTF Surround recording setup. The set consists of four CCM 41 L supercardioid microphones, a 4-way ORTF Surround Bar, a Splitterbox M/6U, a miniature Binder multi-pin extension cable, and a windscreen with fur overcoat.
The ORTF Surround recording method is designed for pickup of surround ambience. This microphone arrangement and its sonic characteristics offer good 360° imaging and natural-sounding spatial impression. This is achieved with a high degree of signal separation among channels based both on arrival-time and level differences.
The ORTF Surround configuration is achieved by mounting the four CCM 41 L supercardioid microphones on the ORTF Surround Bar that is terminated with a Binder multi-pin connector to which the 65.6’ K Surround M miniature Binder extension cable connects. This single multicore cable carries the outputs from individual mics to the Splitterbox M/6U, which is a passive device that provides individual outputs for the mics via 6 XLR sockets. Four of these are active and two remain unused.
The CCM 41 L supercardioid microphone is strongly directional. Sound arriving from off axis is attenuated even more than with a cardioid. The pickup is drier and less susceptible to acoustic feedback. Its directivity is highly independent of frequency, so even sounds arriving off axis and reverberant sound are registered without coloration. Consequently, even distant placement of the capsule produces a very natural sound pickup.
The WSC ORTF Surround LM consists of basket-type windscreen, an elastic suspension, and a fur-like overcoat. The ORTF Surround arrangement has been designed so that the entire arrangement can be conveniently mounted in a single elastic suspension, and share a single windscreen. The fur-like overcoat provides additional wind protection.
