QNAP TS-420U overview

  • 1Description

The TS-420U 4-Bay NAS Server for SMBs from QNAP is an all-in-one rack mount network attached storage (NAS) server optimized for small and medium businesses looking for an affordable yet high performance network storage solution. The NAS server is a high-performance 4-bay NAS server with large capacity storage and file sharing. It acts as a backup center for business-critical applications. The NAS server can hold up to 4 hard drives and is designed to be easily installed in the server room and configured with up to 12TB of storage capacity. This server is an ideal solution for centralized data backup, cross-platform file sharing, iSCSI/IP-SAN storage combo solution and a number of business applications. Moreover, the NAS server offers exceptionally low power consumption, reliable system operations and capacity expandability.

The intuitive MyCloudNAS service simplifies the process of publishing content residing on the NAS server over the Internet and helps IT administrators to create private cloud storage in just a few simple steps. The mobile app QMobile provides users with iOS or Android mobile devices a convenient way to access the NAS server on the go.

Large Capacity Storage and File Sharing

Cross-Platform Sharing with Antivirus
The NAS server supports SMB/CIFS, NFS and AFP protocols for file sharing across Windows, Mac, and Linux/UNIX networks. User accounts and shared folders can be created via the user-friendly web-based interface without IT expertise. The integrated antivirus solution ensures business continuity by offering protection against the latest viruses, malware, worms and Trojan horses
Windows Active Directory (AD) and LDAP Directory Service
The Windows AD and LDAP (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol) directory service features enable the IT administrator to retrieve user accounts from Windows AD or LDAP-based directory server to the server, reducing time and effort in account setup. Users can use the same login name and password to access the NAS server. In addition, the NAS server can be configured as an LDAP server and allows devices with LDAP protocol enabled to be joined in the directory and share the same user accounts and groups
Shared Folder Aggregation
You can access the shared folders of other servers on Microsoft networking through the "portal folder" on the server. This saves the time and effort in logging in multiple servers one by one
ISO File Archiving and Sharing
The NAS server supports mounting ISO images of CD and DVD discs as network shares for data archiving, storage and sharing. This feature saves the space for storing physical discs, reduces the risk of data loss caused by disc wearing and tearing as well as enhances the efficiency of data sharing on business network
Advanced Folder Permissions
Advanced folder permissions allow you to configure folder/subfolder access to the server. With this feature enabled, users can manage the folder permissions from Microsoft Windows or the web-based management interface of the NAS server easily

Advanced RAID Management with Hot-Swap Design
The NAS server offers RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 5+hot spare, single and JBOD disk configurations. It also supports hot-swap design so that a failed member drive of a RAID configuration (RAID 1 or above only) can be replaced by hot swapping without turning off the server
Global Hot Spare
The Global Hot Spare feature allows the IT administrator to share spare drives with multiple RAID volumes on the server. When a hard drive fails in any RAID volume, the global hot-spare drive will automatically replace the failed drive to prevent data from being lost. Compared with a local spare drive, the Global Hot Spare function offers more efficient use of spare drives
Online RAID Capacity Expansion
The storage capacity of a RAID configuration can be expanded by replacing larger hard drives. All the data will be kept and seamlessly moved to the newly installed hard drives without turning off the server
Online RAID Level Migration
You can upgrade the disk configuration to a higher RAID level with the data retained, without turning off the server
IP-SAN/ iSCSI Storage and Virtual Disk Drives (VDD) for Storage Expansion
The NAS server provides a cost-efficient iSCSI solution to set up an IP-SAN storage. With the built-in iSCSI initiator, the NAS server can also connect to other iSCSI targets over the network and turn them into virtual disk drives (VDD)
