Canon EF 200-400mm f/4L IS USM Extender 1.4x Overview

A long-reaching zoom characterized by its versatility, the EF 200-400mm f/4L IS USM Extender 1.4x from Canon is a medium to super-telephoto distinguished by its unique optical design and fast performance. Featuring a built-in 1.4x extender, you can quickly and intuitively switch between the native 200-400mm f/4 setting and an effective 280-560mm f/5.6 for greater reach. Benefitting this unique design is a sophisticated optical layout, which includes one fluorite element and four ultra-low dispersion elements to control chromatic aberrations and color fringing for increased clarity. A Super Spectra coating has also been applied to individual elements to reduce lens flare and ghosting for greater color accuracy and contrast when working in bright or backlit conditions.

Beyond the optical attributes, this 200-400mm f/4 is also characterized by its advanced four stop-effective Image Stabilizer system, which has three separate stabilization modes to suit various shooting applications. Also complementing handling is a sophisticated ring-type USM, which provides quick, quiet, and accurate autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override. Additionally, this lens is weather-sealed for use in trying environmental conditions and it has a removable rotating tripod collar to benefit working atop a tripod or monopod.

Super telephoto zoom is designed for full-frame Canon EF-mount DSLRs, however can also be used with APS-C models where it provides a 320-640mm equivalent focal length.
Built-in 1.4x extender allows you to instantly extend your reach to 280-560mm (or 448-896mm equivalent with APS-C cameras) simply by flipping the left-hand switch. Since the extender is integrated within the lens housing, it is optically matched to the lens for improved imaging performance and also fully maintains the lens's weather sealing.
Constant f/4 maximum aperture, without the teleconverter in position, offers consistent illumination throughout the zoom range. When the 1.4x teleconverter is engaged, the maximum aperture is effectively f/5.6.
One fluorite element and four ultra-low dispersion elements are used to greatly reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations in order to achieve greater clarity and color accuracy.
Super Spectra coating has been applied to individual elements to minimize ghosting and flare for greater contrast and color neutrality when working in strong lighting conditions.
An Optical Image Stabilizer helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to four shutter speed stops to better enable working in low-light conditions and with slower shutter speeds. Three distinct IS modes are available: standard single-shot mode, a panning-optimized mode, and a mode that only activates the Image Stabilizer during the exposure.
A ring-type Ultrasonic Motor (USM), along with optimized focusing algorithms and a high-speed CPU, is employed to deliver fast, precise, and quiet autofocus performance as well as full-time manual focus override.
Focus Preset function is available to quickly recall a programmed focusing position.
Focus Limiter switch lets you constrain the focusing to different ranges for faster performance to suit different applications.
A Power Focus setting is available, and allows you to electronically and smoothly adjust your focus position to suit video recording. This setting utilizes a dedicated ring in front of the main focusing ring and allows you to use one of two different focusing speeds.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.
As a member of the esteemed L-series, this lens is sealed against dust and moisture for working in inclement environmental conditions.
Fluorine-coating on exposed elements affords protection to the optical system, resists smudging and fingerprints, and is easier to clean.
Removable rotating tripod collar is included and benefits working with the lens atop a tripod or monopod.
Compatible with optional EF 1.4X and EF 2X teleconverters.

Canon EF 200-400mm f/4L IS USM Extender 1.4x Reviews

The Porsche of Canon Lenses

This lens is probably the Porsche of Canon Lenses...in build, the handling, the glass quality as well as the way it integrates with the 1.4x extended. It is pricey, and perhaps there are better solutions out there at a lower price...but the quality of images are outstanding. I have used this lens consistently on Safaris in India. Tiger safaris in India can be cramped for distance. The ability to zoom in and out is very powerful...this makes the lens more useful than a fixed zoom. Image quality with another 1.4x extended is also very good...and that makes it even more powerful! Could be cheaper...but I am sure Canon's margins on this are probably lower than some of the more consumer lenses that they produce...

200 to 400 ways to capture outrageous images

I had borrowed this lens three years ago from Canon and used it in Alaska. It is everything I remember and more. Right out of the case, hand held , I caught a Mallard in flight that is remarkable. I am going to up my avid hobbyist game with heavier gimbal and tripod to ensure greater degree of keeper images. This lens, for me, is a one stop versatile platform for all that I shoot from landscape to birds in flight. Doc Kevin. p.s. B&H photo rocks and makes everything a breeze!!!

This lens is insane. So so SO SHARP. I'm in love. Obviously it is HUGE but worth its weight in gold!

Outstanding but pricey

I bought this to replace my 600 mm prime lens, which was very good quality, but an absolute "beast" to handle. The photos taken with the 200-400 are just as good as the prime lens photos, but you get the ability to frame the photo with the telephoto adjustment and a lens that weighs much less than the 600. However, this lens is too heavy to hand hold, it needs a sturdy tripod and gimbal head. I am amazed that a telephoto lens with an extender can match the picture quality of a prime lens, but I guess that is where the price comes in, it is really expensive, so much so that it took me years to cave into the price. I am glad I took the plunge and bought it.

Outstanding versatility

I've been using this as my long glass almost exclusively for nearly two years as a photographer for The University of Iowa athletic department. I'd heard great things about it and couldn't wait to try it out, and I've not been disappointed. The extra reach is great for sports like football and soccer, but I can also use it on the baseline of a basketball game to shoot as tight as I can when the action is at the other end of the floor. The only drawback I've encountered is at night, where I would still prefer either a 400 f/2.8 or a 600 f/4. Overall, I'd give it a 4.75/5.

great versatility but big issue

I've had this lens since it came out. I was using for everything but have since switched back to the 400 with most sports. Having the range of this is perfect but it's just not sharp enough. I even had Canon service it and check it out but it's not as crisp as the 400. For critical sports like NFL and NCAA, I exclusively use the 400 (sometimes with the 1.4). This only gets used for sports where the versatility advantages outweigh the crispness of the shot like MLB, rugby, and maybe soccer. I wish it was sharper and a 2.8 but would settle for the first.

Versatility is key

I took (rented) this lens to Tanzania on a safari trip. Overall I am exceedingly happy with this choice. The 200 to 560 mm range is such a great advantage in the field. Yes, it's much more expensive compared to the 400 F5.6 + 1.4x extender, but the problem with a prime is its lack of flexibility. I am heading to Yellowstone and Glacier NP this summer and can't wait to hold this awesome optical masterpiece again!
