Nikon AF NIKKOR 50mm f/1.4D Overview

Characterized by its fast design and compact profile, the AF NIKKOR 50mm f/1.4D from Nikon is a versatile normal-length prime for everyday shooting. The bright f/1.4 maximum aperture benefits working in difficult lighting conditions and also helps achieve shallow depth of field and selective focus effects. A Super Integrated Coating has been applied to individual elements, and reduces lens flare and ghosting for increased contrast and color accuracy when working in bright and backlit conditions. Also, a rounded seven-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.

Normal-length prime lens is designed for FX-format Nikon F-mount cameras, however can also be used with DX models where it provides a 75mm equivalent focal length.
Fast f/1.4 maximum aperture is well-suited to working in low-light environments and also affords extensive control over depth of field for using selective focus techniques.
A Super Integrated Coating has been applied to individual elements to suppress internal reflections, flare, and ghosting for improved contrast and color accuracy when working in strong lighting conditions.
Autofocus system is compatible with select Nikon DSLRs that support D-type lenses, and offers quick and precise focusing performance.

Autofocus is not supported by DSLRs lacking an autofocus motor, such as the D3000-series, D5000-series, D40, D40X, and D60, where the lens may be used with manual focus only.
Rounded seven-blade diaphragm promotes a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.

Nikon AF NIKKOR 50mm f/1.4D Reviews

Still magical after all these years!

I own several newer 50 mm lenses which are all a bit sharper and manage CA's better, but this lens at 1.4 is just magical. The character of a great image is so much more than how sharp it is, and I love using this lens for portraits because of its unique character. My 50 1.4 ais produces the same unique image.

Great lens!

Amazing follow-focus. Perfect for self portraits and group shots with narrow depth-of-field. Super sharp as all Nikon lenses are.

Excellent value for money

Excellent value for money. Very good bokeh, fairly light, portable and unobtrusive. Solid build. recommended.

This has become my go-to lens for not only wedding pre-ceremony and reception coverage, but also just every day use. I nearly always shoot wide open at 1.4 on my D750 for both photo and video with it and it is really nice. Super sharp and gives a good image. The only thing you have to be careful about it backlit situations. It does horrible in those kinds of situations (as many lenses may tend to do), but if you can avoid that, youre good. Focus ring is smooth and when shooting video in Live View mode, I usually punch in to verify focus. However, sometimes I dont have time to punch in and have been able to nail focus just using the default view on the back of my D750. This is one area I look forward to with the new Z6 - focus peaking!  Sometimes I wish it was a little wider for tight indoor situations, but overall Ive never really had too big a problem with that. But I am looking at getting the 35 F2. If youre looking for a lightweight every day lens for low light situations, this one is hard to beat.

LOVE IT!!

This lens is everything I had hoped for and more. I had bought a starter dslr as a set with two lenses, I ended up upgrading to a better body a few years ago and it helped with quality but I could not understand why I wasn't getting tack sharp images. From the first shot with this camera that's all I've been getting. First photo I took with this was in very low light, inside, with all the curtains shut. The photo still came out tack sharp and gorgeous. What was me fooling around with a new lens turned into an incredible photo of my 2 year old that I'll cherish forever. Composition was gorgeous. Bokeh was perfect and smooth. The only thing I do want to point out is that some might consider this lens to be noisy. I read it beforehand so I figured it would be and honestly I don't even mind at all but just a heads up if that matters to you.

So great for portraits. I also brought it to Europe, which some people said it probably wouldn't be the best travel lens, but I loved it.

Indoor photos are no more a headache. This is a quite a fast lens. I love how it blurs the backgrounds.

question

is it compatible with d5200?
Asked by: Martin R.
It works fine with my d7100. Not sure about the d5200 altho I suspect it's ok. The lens has no internal autofocus motor, so it works with all bodies that can drive a motorless lens via the small rotating pin in the lens mount ring on the camera body. Check the tables of lens compatibility online to make sure.

What is the difference between this lens and the ...

What is the difference between this lens and the Nikkor 50mm 1.4G AF?
Asked by: McKay
"G" lenses are gelded, to cut costs Nikon eliminated manual aperture control (apreture ring). "D" lenses still have the aperture ring, so you can use them with older cameras or if the camera can not control aperture in the lens. Generally, "G" lenses are bigger, have more plastic and have different design than "D" lenses. For digital cameras it does not really make much difference, only if you are still using certain older models, like N55.

The AF NIKKOR 50 1,4 is the old standard lens mount. I would think it naturally would fit the DF, but you should check the DF users manual to be sure.
