The B+W 55mm Circular Polarizer MRC Filter helps to reduce reflections and glare by filtering out light that has become polarized due to reflection from a non-metallic surface. The light from the sun naturally becomes partially polarized due to reflecting off electrons in air molecules, causing the light to scatter into what appears as haze. A polarizing filter arranges, and filters, this directionally polarized light perpendicularly to the reflected light, allowing for the absorption of much of this light. This results in a noticeable reduction of glare and reflections from non-metallic surfaces and an increase in the saturation of skies and foliage.

A circular polarizer only differs from a linear polarizer in that it contains a quarter wave plane in addition to the linear polarizing filter. The addition of this quarter wave plane is to circularly polarize the linearly polarized light for the use of auto focus and exposure functions. Due to how the light is broken down and filtered with a linear polarizer, auto focus and exposure accuracy become skewed during use. When the light becomes circularly polarized, it permits the use of these functions.

The Multi-Resistant Coating (MRC) is both an anti-reflection coating as well as a protective surface. It helps to increase light transmission by reducing reflections, scattered light, and ghosting. Additionally, it offers greater protection to the filter substrate and stays cleaner for longer than uncoated filters.

B+W filters are constructed from high quality Schott glass for increased optical clarity and color fidelity. They feature a brass filter ring for durability as well as jamming prevention.

Clears up haze in distant landscapes and provides more saturated, vivid colors.
Strongest effect when used at a 90° from the sun.
Circular polarizers are ideal for use with digital cameras and autofocus lenses where a linear polarizer will often disrupt auto exposure and focus features.
Multi-Resistant Coating offers both protection to the glass and helps to improve light transmission and image quality.
Constructed from high quality Schott glass for optical clarity.
Brass filter ring helps to prevent jamming and provides additional strength.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Always the smart choice Sure you know why you need to include a polarizer in your kit. It gives you the most beautiful blue skies, cuts reflections, colors are more saturated ..... . Ok then. But why a B+W one? They are really really well made. Very solid. Most have solid brass rings. Brass costs more, and is heavier than aluminum. They why is brass important? Brass won't bind on aluminum. That's important. Over tighten a cheap filter into an expensive lens. If it binds you might unscrew the front lens ring on your nice lens. Get filters with brass rings.B+W glass is made by Schott AG. At one time a Carl Zeiss plant. They know glass. They know glass! Schott make glass, special glass for all of the major camera makes. Zeiss uses Schott glass. So do Leica and Schneider.Sure you can go and get a bunch of polarizers from different manufacturers and test them. To see what gives you the best results, with the least color changes .... or just buy B+W.They make the best. You won't be disappointed. It's always the smart choice.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great filter to get you those blue skies The build is solid and the performance is great. It's the kind of filter that last for years. Metal build and solid rotation mechanism. You won't regret it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I would definitely recommend this product I use this filter solely for the purpose of blocking out some UV rays and extra light. Also, it bumps up the blues when filming with clear skies and the contrast. However, using this with my camcorder, the active image stabilization, AKA BOSS, Balanced Optical SteadyShot causes the black edges to appear when shaking the camera much, which is a bit of nuisance, although it is avoidable. It really depends on what camera you have and how you use this filter with it. Otherwise, there really isn't much else to say about this particular filter, besides that it significantly improves the overall image quality, such as correcting washed out images. The result is a fine looking image with clarity and enhanced contrast. I do have images from my camera taken using the filter, but unfortunately, I didn't take a picture without the filter.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good filter Quality circular polarizer at a fair price. I use a polarizing filter for most outside shots.
