Voigtlander BA248S overview

  • 1Description

Inspired by the original version of this lens from 1951, the silver Nokton 50mm f/1.5 Aspherical from Voigtlander is a fast normal-length prime for M-mount rangefinder cameras. While utilizing the same basic lens design as the classic version, this updated lens incorporates one aspherical element into its design to help control spherical aberrations and distortion for improved sharpness and clarity. The lens is also characterized by its fast f/1.5 maximum aperture to suit working in low lighting and to offer greater control over depth of field. Its manual focus design permits working with subjects as close as 2.3' away, and the 10-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.

Fast f/1.5 maximum aperture benefits working in low-light conditions and also enables greater control over focus position for selective focus applications.
One aspherical element is incorporated at the rear of the six elements in five groups construction, and helps to limit spherical aberrations and distortions.
Manual focus design enables a minimum focusing distance of 2.3'.
Ten-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing out-of-focus quality when working with shallow depth of field techniques.
As part of Voigtlander's Vintage Line of lenses, this lens features a silver-colored brass to give it a classic appeal that is well-matched to classic rangefinder camera designs.

    Voigtlander BA248S reviews

Nokton 50mm f/1.5 Aspherical Lens (Silver) is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 17.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Portrait Lens on APS-C Cameras I use this on Sony E-Mount cameras, via the VM-E Close Focus adapter. This is a fantastic, well-made, compact lens. It is at least as good as anything Sony makes... better, even, for the fact that it is truly manual-focus, not focus-by-wire, as modern AF lenses tend to be. Manual focus with this lens is more precise than is even possible with focus-by-wire. This lens is surprisingly sharp wide open at f/1.5, with very little discernible chromatic aberration. Also, the out-of-focus characteristics - bokeh - is very smooth and pleasing. This is my go-to lens for portraiture. Both of the sample images attached to this review were produced on a Sony NEX-6 at f/1.5

Rated 5 out of 5 by from excellent lens for Leica m240 I am not sure if I am a 35mm or 50mm focal length Leica m240 photographer so instead of buying very expensive Leica lenses immediately I have bought this excellent non-Leica 50mm lens and a used 35mm Leica Summarit so that I can experience both focal lengths in a variety of surroundings. The Nokton wide-open is f/1.5 which offers shallow DOF for near subjects, with nice Bokeh, or good light gathering power in available darkness. I programmed the m240 to think this is a 50/1.4 Leica lens, an approach which brings up the correct frame line and applies minor image corrections.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent Lens This is an excellent 50mm lens for Leica cameras. I've owned a pair of recent Summilux lenses and frankly, this one is every bit as good as the current model Summilux. I will qualify this by saying I've only used this CV lens on my M Monochrom (CCD version) but whether shot wide open or stopped down to f9.5 or f11, this lens is a very good equal to the Summilux. The reason I have not given this lens 5-stars vs. the 4-star rating is because I just think that the focus ring should be more smooth rather than this jagged edge focus ring. I also own the CV 35mm Ultron (newest version) and that lens is an equally excellent lens except for this somewhat odd focus ring. My 2. Overall though, an excellent lens with superior construction and lovely image quality. Highly recommended.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Could not be happier I use this lens on both a film rangefinder camera as well as an A7 R2 as well is a GX 85 using a passive Metabones adapter. The performance is awesome. Edge to edge flat and clean without any sense of vignetting or distortion. In particular the bokeh is absolutely fabulous. At F1 .5 up to F5 .6 it is really easy to completely blur the background in a very narrow to a larger range depending on your distance from the subject. The build quality is as good as any Zeiss I own. The action from both the aperture as well as the focus ring are as smooth as silk.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful Retro Design w/ Modern Optics I use this lens adapted for micro four-thirds, so it has a field of view equivalent to 100mm on a full frame camera, so this is a short telephoto, perfect for portraits. The relatively bright f/1.5 maximum aperture is great for subject isolation, low light conditions and background bokeh. This particular version of this lens is chrome-plated brass, so it is a little heavier than the black version, but old-time quality to go along with the old-time styling. Not too bulky, certainly less so than adapted legacy fast 50s with much deeper adapters. While I have a superb native MFT lens with auto focus, having a lens of this quality is what puts the joy into manual focus photography when I have the time to compose the shot. This lens comes with a custom screw-in hood and metal lens cap. Looks great on OM=D E-M5 and Lumix GX7.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I love this lens. I have been using the Nokton 50/1.5 on a A7ii and have compared it to my Loxia 50/2. Both are excellent lenses, but I must say that the Nokton has stolen my heart. It is compact, yet solid, and very smooth in operation. Unlike some other reviewers, I like the knurled focusing ring. It just takes some time to get used to it. IQ is stunning, and I'm not referring to sharpness alone, but to overall rendering. Colors are vibrant and the bokeh is exquisite, even at wide apertures. On those occasions when I have encountered fringing, it has been easy to remove in the raw convertor. Compared to the Loxia, images are slightly less punchy, but the files are more malleable in post-processing. I am debating whether to purchase a TechArt AF adapter to use with my Nokton (and my Ultron 35/1.7). It could be useful in certain situations, but it would also deprive me of the pleasure of focusing manually. With a lens like this one, the process really is fun.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from my primary lens - and what a lens! I use this mounted to an a7ii and its attached to that body most of the time as my standard walk around lens. (after travelling for a couple of months with a sony a77 and lenses in 2013/14, I decided I would try to find something compact for the next trip i'm hoping to embark on in 2015) I find the images are beautifully sharp and the low light results just incredible. Bokeh is smooth. I get a small amount of vignetting on my copy at f1.5 (an effect I quite like) but its slight, non intrusive and easily removed if required. Just one step down and its no longer present. The lens is small and compact (which with the a7ii should make up some bag much needed bag space) and build quality is exquisite overall. Focus and aperture controls smooth and precise, meaning the lens is a breeze to use and never frustrating trying to get the results you're after. I can wait to see what images I can capture using this thing on the evening streets of Thailand, Vietnam and beyond. What more is there to say really? Probably the best lens I have ever owned, and one I don't think I'll ever let go.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A great glass for the price This is a great substitute to expensive Leica lenses. I use it with my Leica Safari MP240. Although the name is German sounding this lens is actually made in Japan. Because of the inexpensive price You would be surprised to how well it was made. It would've been foolish to compare this to a noctilux glass but again for the price this is one of the most bang for the buck lens for your Leica body.
