Very Good 35mm Scanner

By Dale

I have a older Epson 1680 Pro scanner but it does not do a good job with 35mm transparencies. It still does a good job with 2 1/4 films and 4x5 transparencies. I had over 600 old family Kodachrome slides I wanted to scan. Having a lab to do the work was way too expensive and would cost thousands so I bought the Plustex 8200i SE and I was very impressed with the quality of scans I am getting. Once everything was set up. The process is running smoothly. I am only giving it four stars becasue the Silverfast 8 software that came with the scanner was on CD's. I have a Mac that does not have a CD player. I first called Plustek then I had to call LaserSoft. Since I do not have a CD player I needed to download the software. I was lucky LaserSoft had the Silverfast software to download. That my friends was a real pain to download and to register. The process is a bit complicated and I needed an agent to help me out with loading it up. The Software is OK and easy to figure out if you have worked with scanners before or Adobe products. With the scanner I use the Kodachrome option, label the image and input the file where I want the scans to go to on my computer and selected the quality of scan I needed. Once the scans were done I put the scans into Lightroom for further color adjustments and cropping then with selected images I would put them into Photoshop to do dust and scratch removal and retouching. I use the dust and scratch removal feature called SDRx on the Silverfast software but there is still a lot of dust and scratches from old Kodachrome transparencies from the 50's and 60's. Unfortunately the images were not stored correctly. I blow off all the dust I can before using the scanner. I do highly recommend this scanner. The reason I bought this brand was because it had good reviews. For the money it does an excellent job. The LaserSoft company needs to get rid of the CD disks that come with the scanner and make downloading the software a lot easier from their website.

Amazing results even for a beginner at scanning photos

I could not believe the quality of the results that I got from my first attempt at scanning a 35mm color film from 1980. The software is very easy to use, the scans are quite fast, and I used the automated features for dust / scratch removal and balance / enhancement of colors. The results were stunning. Pre-scanning, scanning, automatic adjustments took something like 3 minutes par picture. It was almost a push one button operation. One feature that I very much liked was the pre-scanning feature, which is almost instantaneous and allows you to really see if a picture is worth scanning in the first place. I am frankly ecstatic and I can now share memories with my elderly parents. All their pictures from 50 and 40 years ago have faded dramatically and my scans bring these pictures back to life in such a dramatic way. My dad (who has some issues with dementia) even thought that my sister on one of these pictures (when she was 4) was actually alive on the computer screen. It was a bitter-sweet moment, but I am immensely grateful to Plustek for making this possible.

The Silverfast program seems to be working ok, but it's disappointing to learn that two out of the three buttons don't work with macs. I can still scan through the app, but would love a quick option

I've only scanned a few dozen of my old dive photos, but so far the results are great. Excellent resolution, and unlike some other reviews, I find the SilverFast software fairly intuitive and easy to use.

It was easy to set up and works great. The software is good, takes a little getting used to but once you figure it out it works great.

Scanner vs Software

Much prefer this scanner versus the epson flatbed. However, the software is atrocious. If you get this I recommend scanning the negative as a positive and using Negative Lab Pro in Lightroom. It's night and day versus the native software.

AC 240 for Australia?

Yes, this device is multi-voltage and will work in AC 240 for Australia; you would simply need a plug tip adapter to fit it into the foreign outlets. See the link below for a recommend travel plug adapter kit:http://bhpho.to/IyfOma

question

I've read OpticFilm 8100 does not work on Mavericks.Does OpticFilm 8200 SE or 8200 AI work on Mac OSX 10.9 (Mavericks)?
Asked by: Anonymous
Although it the 8200SE, AI is compatible with Mac, the specs state: that the external buttons are not: IntelliScan, QuickScan (PC Only) I called Plustek support and these functions are not even accessible through the software. So the AI features - which make this model more expensive - are not Mac compatible. If I have been misinformed, please provide a correction. I would still purchase this model if I could get what I'm paying for.

Will this scanner allow you to scan 126 negatives and slides? Is there a different tray available for 126 negatives and slides?
Asked by: Taylor
I'm not aware of a feeder that holds 126 slides. The feeder it comes with holds four at a time. The scanner itself scans one at a time. But it's pretty fast, I was scanning at half the max resolution (the files came out at about 4700px by 3100px) and I could do 126 in a single night of while watching TV.
