Plustek 8200i SE Reviews

Hardware updated, Software improved

I read a lot of reviews that criticize the SilverFast software and recommended VueScan. The MacOS VueScan software no longer supports the 8200i due to an updated logic processor on the hardware. Fortunately, the included silverFast 9 Plus license seems to provide sufficient functionality for me, although limited to use with the 8200i itself. Overall, this device is significantly better than the do it yourself viewer scanners and really does a nice job. It does force you into a workflow of only scanning Your worthwhile content but that is a good discipline to develop.

software failed - do not buy

This unit worked for about 100 slides and then got progressively slower. Now it has failed completely. When starting a prescan it makes noise for about 10 seconds and then stops. It seems to be a software problem because it will occasionally work if I reboot everything. The manufacture has not be able to offer any useful advise. I recommend not buying this because it has totally failed after 100 slides and I cannot get advise on how to fix it.

Solid performer

I initially purchased a cheaper scanner (the Wolverine F2d Titan). It was fast but the output was awful in my opinion. The dynamic range of that scanner and color rendition was simply not good. So I decided to try the Plustek. Although it is slower, the results are worth the wait. I like the ability to output the photo in TIFF and PSD, in addition to JPEG. Several reviewers have complained about the accompanying software. While the manual is not very helpful, I have found the software pretty easy to use and appreciate the ability to do meaningful adjustments to a photo before scanning it.

This scanner took a while to get used to but once I got an idea of how the software worked, I've very pleased with the scanner.

Very good at what it is for

No complains at all, other than about slow USB connection. An upgrade to USB3 would have improved the speed of scanning significantly. I'm happy with the quality of scans I got from 35mm slides.

Decent scanner, horrendous software

The scanner is fine. The software, Silverfast, looks and functions like an early 2000s Windows application. It's pitiful. Worse yet, the scanner came with Silverfast version 8 and to upgrade to version 9, they want you to pay $50. An absolute shonda.

Very good scanner. Software Okay

I'm using this scanner for old slides and negatives. It produces good images and the scratch removal is especially nice. However, I haven't really tried using the color correction features, etc., preferring to use Lightroom and Photoshop for those chores. It's not a fast process, however, taking roughly 30+ seconds per image to scan and move the tray to the next one. I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because the SilverFast software works, but it's clunky to use. The GUI could use a refresh. One oddity is that the preview window shows a crop, rather than the full available image. You can resize it or move it around, but that just adds to the tedium, if you do it every time. (Fortunately, most of the time for me, the crop is okay for me as it removes uninteresting peripheral details.)

Works great

Once I got the equipment working with my Mac, it's been great. It's the getting it to work piece that is annoying. I spent quite some time with customer support (who were great, by the way) and downloading stuff to get it to work. So my advice to those Mac users thinking of buying: It is really great, but be prepared to be patient.

Yes, this device is multi-voltage and will work in AC 240 for Australia; you would simply need a plug tip adapter to fit it into the foreign outlets. See the link below for a recommend travel plug adapter kit:http://bhpho.to/IyfOma

question

I've read OpticFilm 8100 does not work on Mavericks.Does OpticFilm 8200 SE or 8200 AI work on Mac OSX 10.9 (Mavericks)?
Asked by: Anonymous
Although it the 8200SE, AI is compatible with Mac, the specs state: that the external buttons are not: IntelliScan, QuickScan (PC Only) I called Plustek support and these functions are not even accessible through the software. So the AI features - which make this model more expensive - are not Mac compatible. If I have been misinformed, please provide a correction. I would still purchase this model if I could get what I'm paying for.

Will this scan Kodak Kodaslide stereo slides. I.e. will a stereo slide fit into the 35mm slide carrier?
Asked by: Todd
No, the film carriers for the Plustek OpticFilm 8200i SE Film Scanner would not hold the stereo slides properly. You would need to unmount those in order to scan. Or there may be 3rd party holders out there that would work, though we do not carry any currently.
