The Kirk Lens Collar for Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR Lens is a replacement lens collar that is designed to increase stability and rigidity when using the NKKOR 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR lens with a tripod. It features an integrated Arca-Swiss-style base plate for mounting to any compatible quick release clamp and also incorporates one 1/4"-20 socket for use on other styles of tripod heads.

The lens collar design utilizes two contact points to provide maximum lens support, which is reinforced by the durable and lightweight precision-machined aluminum alloy construction. The collar is operable by using the large knurled grip locking ring, which enables smooth, accurate, and quick rotation of the lens for switching between shooting orientations and locking at any position.

Lens Collar for Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR Lens is rated 4.9 out of 5 by 93.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Don't wait as long as I did... If you're tired of Nikon's flimsy lens collar, you won't truly realize what you're missing until you get this replacement. Lightweight but solid, very smooth-turning, and well worth the money while being substantially cheaper than RRS's over-engineered, over-priced alternative. Also love how low-profile the Kirk collar is, making it comfortable for hand-holding. VERY happy with product, and BTW, the mount hood does allow for the lens hood to be reversed for storage in camera bag, unlike some of the reviews I read. Highly recommended product.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Better Than Stock Collar I bought this as I didn't like the stock collar and foot that Nikon provides with the lens. Too much was left unsupported, especially when the lens is zoomed to to 400mm. Additionally, I felt the collar itself did not bear fully on the lens tube, and that vibration and shake would be an issue, just like with the Nikon 300mm f/4 lens, which has a similar collar/foot design. This collar and foot definately reduces vibration in the lens and lessens camera-induced movement when the shutter is fired. I consider it well worth the price for anyone working off a tripod. The only improvement I can think of would be: a - a longer bearing surface on the front bearing point and: b - a cushioning material of some sort (cork, felt, rubber, etc.) on both the front bearing point and the lens collar itself.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Lens Collar Nikon Should Have Made I purchased this item along with the 80-400 zoom with the idea that I'd send it back if the OEM collar from Nikon was sufficiently stable. There was way too much flex in it so I attached the Kirk collar and it made all the difference in the world for the lens. As an added bonus the lens in combination with a Nikon D800 perfectly balances on the tripod foot. I can set the lens down on a flat surface without it tipping. I would consider this or the RRS collar replacement to be essential for the 80-400 if you plan to use it on a tripod.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Can't do without it Nikon's lens foot is useful only for bolting some sort of an Arca Swiss plate onto the lens. The Kirk lens collar replaces the Nikon collar and lens foot. In addition the Kirk unit adds support farther forward to take stress off the collar itself. I had the old 80-400 lens with the Kirk collar and used it for several years with great satisfaction. The Kirk collar for the new lens is an improved version of an already excellent product.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from a must for tripods Just bought it about two weeks ago. We were in South Carolina photographing ducks and other migratory birds. They usually stay quite far as they may be afraid of hunting. Unfortunately the supplied collar and foot ny Nikon are not stable and this shows in lost sharpness in photos at 400mm. As soon as you receive and place the kirk collar, you immediately notice the stronger rigidity and stability. Fully happy so far, except that I consider this quite expensive for what it is.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Far better than the Nikon collar I owned the Kirk collar for the D version of this lens and never hesitated to make the purchase when I acquired the G version. The Kirk collar has a MUCH larger and more stable foot than the stock Nikcn collar that comes with the lens and is made of metal. The Nikon collar is a relatively lightweight (and flimsy feeling) plastic. The 80-400 is a relatively large, heavy lens and it feels much more stable when mounted on a tripod than it does with the Nikon collar attached. Strongly recommended if you plan to shoot with the 80-400 on a tripod at least some of the time.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Rock solid addition This is a MUST have. The flex with the OEM foot is insane for this level of glass.I handhold this zoom 24/7/365 on a BushHawk. The difference is sharpness is dramatic. Yeah, it's kinda pricey but our friends at B&H shipped it quickly (for free) nestled in heavy duty bubble wrap and a larger than necessary box.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent design and engineering This lens collar, made specifically for the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR Lens, replaces the stock Nikon collar. The Kirk collar offers improved rigidity and stability over the stock collar due to its two support points for the lens. Basically, it has better design and engineering. The integrated Arca-style plate mounts directly onto the clamp (from a different manufacturer)on my ball head/tripod combination. The collar does not interfere with hand-held operation of the camera/lens at all, so it is convenient to keep the collar attached to the lens at all times. The collar is definitely worth its price, especially since it actually does reduce vibration of the camera/lens in the tripod configuration, and it is only a modest incremental cost relative to the cost of the lens. The stock Nikon collar has become a paperweight on my desk, a role in which it functions quite well.
