Singh-Ray R-300 overview

  • 1Description

The Singh-Ray LB ColorCombo Polarizer Filter blends both the LB Color Intensifier and LB Warming Circular Polarizer into a single filter to provide the benefits of both in a more convenient package.

The LB Color Intensifier aspect is designed to enrich local color contrast in specific regard to warm colors as well as greens. The filter strives to boost the intensity of those specific colors while maintaining a natural rendering of other neutral colors as well as white tones within the scene.

The LB Warming Circular Polarizer portion of the filter helps to reduce reflections and glare by filtering out light that has become polarized due to reflection from a non-metallic surface. This results in a noticeable increase in the saturation of skies and foliage, as well as clearer imagery when photographing in hazy conditions. A circular polarizer differs from a linear polarizer in that it supports full use of a camera's autofocus and auto exposure functions. Additionally, a warming effect is applied to imagery by imparting a slight red/yellowish hue across the entire image.

The LB designation of this filter stands for "Lighter, Brighter", which refers to the lower optical density of the filter that enables shorter shutter speeds or smaller f/stops to be used when the filter is in place. The brighter design of the filter also enables a brighter viewfinder image to aid in composition as well as improves auto exposure and focusing performance. This filter requires an additional 2 stop exposure for normal results.

This filter features a 100mm-diameter sprocket mount for use with Cokin Z-Pro filter holders. This design allows you to insert the filter in the slot closest to the lens for minimizing the amount of light between the filter and lens. The sprocket itself is constructed from plastic, while the 88mm-diameter filter substrate is constructed from highly polished glass.

LB Color Intensifier

Enhancing filter boosts the intensity of greens and warm colors without producing an unnatural appearance.
Strengthens local color contrast and saturation.
Maintains a natural rendering of whites and other neutral colors.

LB Warming Circular Polarizer

Reduce reflections and glare by filtering out light that has become polarized due to reflection from a non-metallic surface.
Arrange and filter directionally polarized light perpendicularly to the reflected light allowing for the absorption of much of the light.
Lessens haze in distant landscapes and provides more saturated, vivid colors.
Strongest effect when used at a 90° from the sun.
Warming effect adds a red/yellowish tone to imagery in order to minimize overwhelming cool tones and add a brighter appearance.

LB ColorCombo Polarizer

"Lighter, Brighter" design enables shorter shutter speeds or smaller apertures to be used.
100mm-diameter sprocket mount is designed for use with Cokin Z-Pro filter holders and enables use of other rectangular filters within the same holder.
Constructed from highly-polished glass to provide high image quality and clarity.

    Singh-Ray R-300 reviews

LB ColorCombo Polarizer Filter (Cokin Z-Pro Sprocket Mount) is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 2.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Is it worth it? Being a landscape photographer a wide angle is an essential piece of equipment and well we all know when you start putting filters on while pulled all the way back the little demon creeps in. VIGNETTE oh man, I have the 77mm color combo and felt the weight change in my wallet immediately, so I was quite reluctant to invest in this beauty just to gain the full point of view at 16mm on my lens without the darkness creeping in. Well it all comes together very nicely, I ordered this for my venture into Zions Subway in which virtually every shot included this filter snugly fit into the Z holder and a ND graduated and or Nd filter in front of it. The rotation is a little stiff but doesn't bother me one bit for it feels solid and well controlled. I read complaints about getting fingers in there to rotate it but I didn't have a problem. This filter resolved my issues with vignetting and produces great images as well as the rest of sing-ray products. And Polarization is about the only effect that can not be imitated in post production. Yes it is well worth the money.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfection Empty wallet and okay with it. This filter is expensive! This filter is also extremely good. The slight warming effect, the perfect polarization, and the subtle color intensifying effect all work together is perfect harmony. All of this in a design that fits perfectly into the Cokin Z-Pro system. I am currently running this filter in a modified Z-Pro holder that allows me to use this closest to the lens and two additional plate filters with absolutely no vignetting at 16mm on the Canon 16-35 f4 L IS! Mind blowing stuff to be sure! Obviously, traditional polarizer rules still apply. Do not use this filter with wide angle lens when photographing any scene with the sky in it, as it will become uneven and garish. Take it in the woods on a rainy day and shoot at 16mm, but be careful, your head might explode due to the beauty of the shots this filter makes possible. Like any filter, it can be scratched, dropped, broken, etc... Be very careful, this thing is pricey, but well worth the investment. I would only recommend this lens to very highly trained/experienced photographers. My one huge warning is with the Cokin Z-Pro holder, there are a total of three plastic buttons that push in and out, make sure bottom two are out so filter does not drop out of holder, and most importantly, make sure top single plastic button is pushed inward, as this has the potential to scratch the back surface of the filter. Enjoy!!
