Singh-Ray LB ColorCombo Overview

  • 1Description
  • 2LB Color Intensifier
  • 3LB Warming Circular Polarizer
  • 4LB ColorCombo Polarizer

The Singh-Ray 105mm LB ColorCombo Polarizer Filter blends both the LB Color Intensifier and LB Warming Circular Polarizer into a single filter to provide the benefits of both in a more convenient package.

The LB Color Intensifier aspect is designed to enrich local color contrast in specific regard to warm colors as well as greens. The filter strives to boost the intensity of those specific colors while maintaining a natural rendering of other neutral colors as well as white tones within the scene.

The LB Warming Circular Polarizer portion of the filter helps to reduce reflections and glare by filtering out light that has become polarized due to reflection from a non-metallic surface. This results in a noticeable increase in the saturation of skies and foliage, as well as clearer imagery when photographing in hazy conditions. A circular polarizer differs from a linear polarizer in that it supports full use of a camera's autofocus and auto exposure functions. Additionally, a warming effect is applied to imagery by imparting a slight red/yellowish hue across the entire image.

The LB designation of this filter stands for "Lighter, Brighter", which refers to the lower optical density of the filter that enables shorter shutter speeds or smaller f/stops to be used when the filter is in place. The brighter design of the filter also enables a brighter viewfinder image to aid in composition as well as improves auto exposure and focusing performance. This filter requires an additional 2 stop exposure for normal results.

Singh-Ray ring-mounted filters are constructed from highly polished proprietary glass to provide notable image quality and clarity. The standard ring mount design measures 11.1mm-thick and features front filter threads for stacking of additional filters.

LB Color Intensifier

Enhancing filter boosts the intensity of greens and warm colors without producing an unnatural appearance.
Strengthens local color contrast and saturation.
Maintains a natural rendering of whites and other neutral colors.

LB Warming Circular Polarizer

Reduce reflections and glare by filtering out light that has become polarized due to reflection from a non-metallic surface.
Arrange and filter directionally polarized light perpendicularly to the reflected light allowing for the absorption of much of the light.
Lessens haze in distant landscapes and provides more saturated, vivid colors.
Strongest effect when used at a 90° from the sun.
Warming effect adds a red/yellowish tone to imagery in order to minimize overwhelming cool tones and add a brighter appearance.

question

Do you recommend the standard mount or thin mount ring around the filter?
Asked by: Anonymous
Although the issue of vignetting varies with each lens and is more of an issue with wide angle primes, I always get the thin mount. I do not stack filters, so I don't need the external threads. However, I will note that you cannot attach a lens cap to the this thin mount filter. This specific filter was recommended by Ed Heaton, who may be a better reference.

question

Because this filter is so pricey, naturally Id like for it to last a lifetime. Is dust and maybe water possible to get off without any lasting damage?
Asked by: Dominic M.
Not had a problem cleaning, however, this filter does not allow for a lens cap. That means more dust. I have stop using mine because I cannot place a lens cap on it. I feel like I wasted the money

I got the filter for the cokin Z-pro and it works perfectly, however I don't have a cokin X pro holder so I can't tell if it will work on the X-Pro holder

question

I shoot with Nikon. Do I need to purchase the Thin Mount LB Color Combo for a 17-35mm f/2.8 lens to avoid vignetting? Or, will the standard mount work?
Asked by: Patricia
I use a 17-35 Nikkor lens and photograph real estate so I am always at 17-22. I have the thin mount, at first I order the thicker version, and too much vignette. So I got this thin mount. Using it alone, no other UV filters, or any other filter, I do not get vignetting. If I forget that my UV is on my lens, then I do get vignetting and take care of it in Photoshop!
