Metabones MB_SPEF-E-BM1 Overview

  • 1Description

The Canon EF Lens to Sony NEX Camera Speed Booster from Metabones allows Canon EF lenses to be mounted to Sony E-Mount APS-C format cameras, increasing the angle of view and the maximum aperture of the lens by 1 f-stop. This photo accessory also comes with a detachable tripod foot that is compatible with Arca Swiss, Markins, and Photo Clam ball heads.

The Speed Booster condenses light from the lens and projects it onto the APS-C sensor without vignetting; this allows the sensor to capture all of the lens' transmitted light and effectively produce full-frame coverage on non-full-frame sensors. A corresponding increase in the maximum aperture of 1 stop makes the lens more effective in low-light situations and able to create a shallow depth of field.

Metabones' Speed Boosters are made of machined brass, finished in satin black, the camera-body, and chromium-plated on both mounts to ensure smooth mounting and reliability.

These speed boosters are only fully compatible with mirrorless cameras housing APS-C or smaller image sensors. They will physically fit the Sony A7/A7R full frame mirrorless cameras but the camera must be set in Crop Mode to fully support the speed booster's functions.

    Metabones MB_SPEF-E-BM1 Reviews

Canon EF Lens to Sony NEX Camera Speed Booster is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 16.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Love it, but.... I would consider this a must-have for FS100/700 owners. Be aware that there are some quality-control issues, and some of these end up being too loose, or so tight that you can't mount to camera or lens without risking damage. B&H took care of me when I had to return a couple, but you may not want to use this for the first time on a shoot without trying on several lens combos. Also, be aware that Metabones doesn't include any instructions (printed or online) to let you know about green modes and advanced modes. I had to get the information from Sony forums and doing a lot of research that wouldn't have been necessary if the info was on Metabones site, or if it were included with the adaptor.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Only if you want that DSLR look Let me preface this by stating that this is a high quality product that is extremely well engineered, but may not be the best fit for every cinematographer. For example, I had owned a DSLR and shot many short films on it for years. I was intentionally attempting to shift away from the traditional shallow depth of field associated with full frame sensors. And yes, although this adaptor does give you an extra stop of light, who the hell is going to shoot ANYTHING at f 0.9? I think it's a great product, but as soon as I slapped it on my camera it looked just like a 5D. What's the point of having a Super35 sensor if it doesn't give you that filmic depth of field? All I'm saying it just consider the pros and cons of this item.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Like Magic At first I was worried that something like this was too good to be true, and It would have to come with some major drawbacks.... however, NOT THE CASE. It has a rugged build, nice and weighty to deal with heavy lenses. It locks into my Fs100 perfectly, and boosts my 24-105 f4 all the way up to an f2.8. I bought the 24-105 f4 knowing I could get a speed boost with Metabones, and increase my depth of field. After putting it on, and seeing just how good it works.... this product is GOLD, to anyone looking to shoot on canon lenses

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Quite something... On the Nex 7, the Canon 50mm f1.4 --75mm on the Nex -- becomes f1 (50mm equivalent). The quality of the central images is astounding wide-open. It is, in my view, best to be in manual focus mode for all lenses. Do not, however, expect $7K Leica quality. Properly used, the thing is a small miracle...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Does what it tells ! Great product that turns your camera into a (almost) full frame. Everything that has been written and reviewed about it is true. Lenses do become a bit sharper and you gain F stops and it still allows you to control iris and IS (EF-S lenses do not work with it !). No vignetting or abberrations. A bit expensive, but really does what it tells.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome! I don't know how it does it, but when I use my canon glass (24-105 F.4), I can somehow get 2.8 according to the LCD screen on an FS700. Great add to all of your glass. It is a little costly, but for the build and what it does, you won't be disappointed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great buy, beefs up your FS700 I use the adaptor with my Sony NEX-FS700 and having the extra stop really helps to make the image prettier with the lessened depth of field. The crop factor on the FS700 is also frustrating at times but with this adaptor, I don't have to worry about it. I feel like the metabones adaptor just supercharged my camera.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wow! I originally had the Metabones Canon EF to Sony E mount converter, so I had doubts about getting the new Speed Booster version. Now that I have both, I never touch the original. I cant believe how fast it makes all of my EF lenses. I placed my Zeiss prime on it, and makes my Sony FS700 look like a completely different camera!

    question

I need to use wide angle ef lenses on fs100, is this the right accesory? Recommend me some lenses, please.Thanks.
    Asked by: Anonymous
The Metabones Canon EF Lens to Sony NEX Camera Speed Booster will make any EF mount lens have a 0.71x wider field of view and a brighter f/stop. On a Super 35 sensor such as the one on the FS100 22mm is moderately wide, 18mm is a very wide and 10mm is ultra wide. If your wide angle lens and the Speed booster will get you into the 10mm-22mm range, you will have a wide angle lens that you can use.

    question

Can this one support the EF lens AF function on the NEX body ?If so, compare to the Metabones Canon EF Lens to Sony NEX Camera Lens Mount Adapter III (Black), which is better and faster AF?
    Asked by: Anonymous
Yes, the Metabones Canon EF Lens to Sony NEX Camera Speed Booster will support autofocus and metering with Canon EF lenses on an NEX body. Both adapters autofocus will be the same speed. The Speed Booster version will allow the lens to perform as if it had a wider aperture than it does, which will allow for faster shutterspeeds in lower light situations.
