Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 overview

  • 1Description

The Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM Art Lens for Pentax is a wide-angle to normal-length zoom lens that features a fast, bright constant f/1.8 maximum aperture. It is specifically designed for use with APS-C-sized sensors and provides a 35mm-equivalent focal length range of 27-52.5mm.

The lens integrates four aspherical elements into its construction as well as five Special Low Dispersion (SLD) glass elements to help minimize various aberrations and distortions throughout the zoom range as well as provide greater image sharpness and clarity. A Super Multi-Layer Coating has also been applied to lens elements to reduce surface reflections, lens flare, and ghosting to produce images with higher contrast and color fidelity. The lens barrel design is constructed from a Thermally Stable Composite (TSC) material that is akin to metal in texture and resistance to temperature and environmental changes while also remaining lightweight and compact. An internal focusing and zooming mechanism also helps to maintain a compact and consistent overall length and non-rotating front ring also better enables the use of circular polarizing filters. For control of focus, a Hyper Sonic Motor (HSM) is used to ensure fast, precise, and quiet focusing capabilities that are well suited to continuous shooting and movie recording.

Art Lens Line
This lens is part of Sigma's Art line; deeming it well-suited to creative image making due to its large, constant f/1.8 maximum aperture and ability to produce aesthetic bokeh by way of a nine-blade circular diaphragm. The range of focal lengths it covers, from wide-angle to normal-length, is nicely situated for everyday and artistic shooting applications.
Optimized Lens Design
Four aspherical lens elements, as well as the incorporation of five SLD glass elements, help to minimize the appearance of distortions and aberrations throughout the zoom range and provide clear imagery with enhanced sharpness. A Super Multi-Layer Coating also benefits the image quality by reducing reflections and flare and contributing to greater overall contrast and fidelity.
Hyper Sonic AF Motor
The Hyper Sonic Motor provides fast, quiet, and smooth auto focusing that is well-suited for use with video applications. This AF motor can also be manually overridden at any time by rotating the focusing ring, giving you the ability to fine-tune image sharpness through manual focusing.
Other Lens Features
  • Constructed using a TSC compound material, this lens is lightweight while also exhibiting notable durability and resistance to environmental changes.
  • An internal focusing and zooming mechanism helps to maintain a consistent overall lens length and a non-rotating front ring facilitates more efficient use of circular polarizers.

    Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 reviews

18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM Art Lens for Pentax is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 12.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from a breakthrough lens. This is the only f1.8 zoom on the market and it is constant aperture. In addition, the Image Quality is outstanding and is on par with the best prime lenses like the Pentax FA*24. it is very sharp and resistance to flare is good. Some CA wide open with high contrast situations but other than that, really not much to complain about wrt Image quality. bokeh is ok... AF is fast and silent and the lens has quick shift override. Only negatives: - limited range of 2x but that is a design tradeoff for quality and fast aperture - Heavy and big compared to other zooms in the same range - Not weather sealed... I plan to use for museum and other indoor venue shots where being fast and wide is needed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Take some awesome pictures - get some muscle while doing it. Incredibly smooth all around, speedy focus, amazing everything else, a tank. So many primes in one and it's not a gimmick. Pictures are sick. One of sigmas best. I returned it however, realizing that while this is an incredible lens, it's not for me. When you're zooming or manual focusing it just gives you a good day because of how well constructed it is. But! It's a little too large and heavy for me. I wanted a carry around lens and while fixed 1.8 on a zoom lens sounds like a great carry around, it's weight holds itself back. Maybe I'm just a wimp.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Outstanding Used this on a 2 week photo trip in Jasper National Park, Alberta, and loved it. Had no focusing issues at all, found it to be incredibly sharp, with great colour rendition. Though I primarily use a tripod, It handled well. A purchase I will never regret.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My favourite lens This lens is so dang sharp I can't use anything else because it looks disappointing in comparison. No distortion and looks amazing wide open that I hardly shoot anything lower. A perfect range that I never need to swap it out because it's so versatile.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from How good can this lens be? This is probably going to be my #1 lens just for sharpness alone. Nice to also have a fast 1.8 constant F stop. Size may be a bit large but weight is very evenly distributed. Yes, it is a lot of money but replaces three lenses in my kit bag so in the end a great decision to go with this one.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from very sharp, smooth and fast focus This lens is built like a tank. It is very sharp wide opened, absolutely superb built quality. It focuses very well on my pentax k3 without any calibration. Autofocus is fast and silent. I am obsessed with picture quality and this lens deliveres. Better than any Pentax mount lens I have so far: sigma 10-20, sigma 30 f1.4, sigma 17-70, pentax 50 f1.4, pentax 50-135 f2.8, tamron 17-50 f2.8. Highly recommended. Makes me NOT regret I have an APSC sensor camera.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Well Built I have a 55mm 1.4 and had it on my camera pretty much constantly for over a year. A couple of friends of mine asked if I would photograph their wedding so I needed a lens to cover closer images. I took a few test shots with my 1.4 and quickly discovered that I would pay extra for a 1.8 over a 2.8 lens, even sacrificing some zoom power. Not worrying about loosing light when you zoom in is of incredible value. I have found this lens to be incredibly sharp when it is focused. Even in the far corners it is amazingly sharp. I will admit that I don't have as much trust in my K3's ability to focus with this lens as the 55mm 1.4, but it does alright. It is a very solid lens and somewhat large, but I appreciate that it doesn't change size when you zoom. Such lenses usually aren't built as well (just my opinion). The lens also focuses incredibly close. I've gotten it to focus at about six inches away. A few things I don't like, other than the slow focus: lens cap can be hard to put on just turning the focus ring over as far to infinity as possible makes infinity out of focus.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I'm in love This lense is BEAST! I have not had an oppertunity to put it through the ringer...yet, but what test shots and video that I have done in the two weeks I've had it, I can say a couple of things with surety: 1) it trumps my pentax 50mm 1.8 (chromatic abb is next to none), and 2) I haven't had any of the focusing issues that I've read about in some reviews. In fact, it is spot on tack sharp, and this too trumps my 50. The Sigma IS a smidge slower in lower light (as in next to none), but it's still a dream. And good LAWD! When in somewhat adequate lighting...smdh. I am impressed, delighted, and giddy as a school girl. Everything is...perfect. It is a bit heavier than I imagined it would be, even WITH the warnings, but it isnt enough to be a considerable detracting factor, in fact, it lets me know that it's build quality is solid. I have this mounted onto my k3, and cannot wait to do some astrophotography! I know that the limited focal length is enough to turn some peoole off; in fact, I debated on purchasing the Sigma 24-70mm f2.8..but of all the reviews I read, I felt that the 18-35 was my best bet based on my needs (fast wide angle vs a slower mid focal range..and I already had the nifty fifty..) and the fact that its reviews were overall higher. And kudos to B&H for being absolutely superb! I wasnt expecting such fast and efficient shipping.
