Nikon 26397B overview

  • 1Description

The black Nikon COOLPIX P520 Digital Camera features an 18.1MP CMOS sensor and a 4.3-180mm f/3.0-5.9 NIKKOR lens for capturing high-quality still photos and Full HD 1080/60i videos. The 42x optical zoom offers a wide to super telephoto focal range, and the 2x digital zoom gets you even closer to the action, even from far away. Track your travels and explore points of interest with the built-in GPS, which records the location of each shot. Plus, an optional WU-1a Wireless Mobile Adapter allows you to share your shots or control the camera with a compatible smartphone or tablet (sold separately).

Back Side Illuminated CMOS Image Sensor
18.1 effective megapixels provide plenty of power to deliver high-resolution images, and the backside illuminated CMOS image sensor receives more light than conventional sensors to record higher quality images, especially when taking pictures in Night landscape mode using the consecutive shot combining technology.
42x High Power Zoom with Lens-shift VR
The 42x zoom opens up a range of possibilities and shooting perspectives for you to explore. To enhance image clarity, lens-shift VR (Vibration Reduction) reliably compensates for camera shake, which is more likely to occur when shooting at or around the 42x zoom setting. ACTIVE mode can be used to minimize image blur when shooting from a moving vehicle or any other unstable position, stabilizing both captured and viewfinder images.
3.2" Vari-Angle LCD Display
The 3.2" LCD display features 921K-dot resolution, and its Vari-angle design allows you to monitor and compose shots comfortably from various shooting positions.
Full HD 1080/60i Video with Stereo Sound
In addition to high-quality still photographs, the COOLPIX P520 can capture Full HD 1920 x 1080 resolution video at 60 interlaced frames per second. Moreover, the built-in microphone enables stereo audio recordings.
Built-in GPS Recording
With an onboard database of about 1.86 million Points of Interest, built-in GPS gives you extensive capability to quickly record, store and confirm the names of shooting locations where you take pictures. The recorded GPS information can be displayed on the "NIKON IMAGE SPACE" map view or ViewNX 2. Note: in some sales areas, the POI function is not available.
Support for WU-1a Wireless Mobile Adapter
The COOLPIX P520 is compatible with the WU-1a Wireless Mobile Adapter (sold separately). Using the WU-1a allows you to share your shots online or control the camera with a compatible smartphone or tablet.
Designed for Optimal Control and Operability
Assign frequently used functions to the Function button for quick one-touch access. Feel how the ergonomic handgrip maximizes comfort and minimizes camera shake, complementing other features that ensure handling stability, such as the Side zoom control.
Auto and Manual Controls
The COOLPIX P520 employs a combination of auto and manual controls, including COOLPIX Picture Control, scene auto selector and 19 optimized scene modes. Exposure modes include Programmed Auto, Shutter Priority, Aperture Priority and Manual. Manual focus is also available.

    Nikon 26397B reviews

COOLPIX P520 Digital Camera (Black) is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 65.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great choice in cameras! Not an expert at photography but I am enjoying my new Nikon Coolpix P520 digital camera. I love the X42 zoom and the sharpness of the pictures. I take a lot of outdoor nature pictures along with family & grandchildren pictures. Prior to this, I had an expensive Kodak Point & Shoot (which I loved) with X8 Zoom but after so much use the lense was scratched. After 7 years, I decided to invest in a new digital. My new Nikon operates very much like my old Kodak - easy learning curve. Only disappointment with the Nikon is the lense cap is attached to the camera strap-it can get easily tangled with the camera strap.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Amazing performance We bought this one as a gift for family. We have had one for about 6 months and are very pleased with it. The zoom range is enormous. With 35mm equivalent of 1000mm fl, the reach is terrific. Most amazing is that the image stabilization does a great job of capturing sharp images at full extension for hand-held shots. Overall, images are sharp and well rendered. We haven't used the video much, so - no comment. For shooting jpeg images, you just can't ask for more than this camera provides. Yes, there is some noise in the images, but a normal amount for this size image sensor.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My second Coolpix super zoom My daughter the photographer has guided me in my purchases. Takes great photos without alway being the expert. These cameras have been great for my adventure travel. I purchased the P520 to replace my P100 before we travel to Galapagos. In the days I have had the P520, it is everything I hoped for. Great auto mode for my outdoor shooting, and improved low light shooting. I've added a tripod and the wifi adapter for some neat zoom shots into the nearby forest. I think the girl knows her stuff.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good camera but not perfect I purchased this in red just to make it easy to spot. This camera is very lightweight but it does have a lot of features. Overall I like this camera. It isn't stunning in its abilities but the real reason for this camera is the long lens. That 1,000 mm zoom is great but does have limits. If you are using the zoom to bring something close to you that isn't actually very far away (think a picture of wildlife that would run away if you got close) it works great. If on the other hand you are trying to zoom into something that is a mile away then you need to realize that any atmospheric disturbances will be amplified as well. What I like: Massive zoom lens (28-1000) in 35mm equivalent. Camera feels comfortable in my hands. It is small when I try to hold it like a SLR but it is still comfortable. Having a zoom control on the lens barrel. GPS. Image Quality is good (not as good as the P7700 but good non the less). Having both the eye level viewfinder and the back display option. What I dislike: Only shoots jpeg (no Raw capture). Sometimes images are softer then I feel they should be. Some purple fringing along objects in the sky. When shooting in continuous shutter release mode, the time stamp on the photo is from the time the image is saved, not the time the image was captured. The sound quality on movie recording has a lot of background noise. Only has built-in flash. Summary: As long as you don't expect DSLR quality or performance this is a very nice camera.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice Camera for the Price I bought the camera to replace an old Kodak point and shoot. For the price, it takes really good pictures. I am not a power user so I can't push the camera to its limits but I think it does a nice job for the price. My only complaint is that it does have problems focusing when zooming in at long distances. I also prefer my OIS picture software to the Nikon provided software.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Polarizer - is NOT going to happen This is an awesome camera, except for one thing, you can't add basic threaded external filters such as UV or the most important filter for outdoor use; the Polarizer, which is extremely annoying for anybody who wants to make nice outdoor, landscape or travel photos. You have to settle for marginal or mediocre at best. Which is the reason for a 3 rating, if this feature was available it would get a 5 All this design and work goes into a camera of this caliber and it's like they intentially left this feature off so you wouldn't be satisfied with the ability to make really nice outdoor photos. If anybody knows how you can add a filter (other than the bulky cokin option that is available but looks like due to the lens length it may not work either), let me know, because you can't find the solution anywhere in Nikons information, product manual, by googling it, or in the accessories on this web site, which if anybody would be able to show you how to do it and where to buy one you would think either Nikon or B&H could. The manual won't even tell you the thread size, as I don't believe it's designed for any threaded accessories, only for the lens cap that comes with the camera. Extremely frustrating for paying a decent amount of money and expecting a simple feature that would top this camera off and make it an exceptional camera. The main purpose of buying a camera like this is the extreme wide range of lens capability, which is is then handicapped by no filter option.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nikon keeps outdoing itself! Wonderul example of technology advancing for the point and shoot camera. With a 42 X Optical Zoom and relatively small size, it is almost as good as a SLR without the bulky lense. Shuter lag, bain of point and shoots, has been greatly reduced over earlier models.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Great camera after taking the time to learn more about it. Recommend you buy and read Photographer's Guide to the Nikon Coolpix P520 by Axexander S. White! Things I have learned: For sharp pictures turn the Vibration Reduction OFF if you are using a tripod (only turn it on for hand held photos). In Program mode, set the ISO to 80 instead of Auto for sharper pictures. What I love about this camera: Easy to use with multiple options based on your camera knowledge - Auto for beginner; program, shutter priority, aperture priority, manual as you become more experienced. Love the Zoom and the continuous shooting mode, especially for wildlife. Only regret - I wish the camera had a Cable Release option - but a good alternative is to use the Self-Timer. Overall - a great camera for someone who is not quite ready for, or comfortable with, a DSLR.
