Panasonic 20mm f/1.7 overview

  • 1Description

Characterized by its slender profile, the black Lumix G 20mm f/1.7 II ASPH. from Panasonic is a compact, slightly wide 40mm equivalent prime for Micro Four Thirds mirrorless cameras. Its bright f/1.7 maximum aperture offers notable control focus for working with shallow depth of field techniques and also benefits working in difficult lighting conditions. The optical design incorporates a pair of aspherical elements to suppress spherical aberrations and distortion for high sharpness and accurate rendering, and individual elements have also been multi-coated to control surface reflections and flare for improved contrast in strong lighting conditions.

Slightly wider-than-normal prime is designed for Micro Four Thirds mirrorless cameras and offers a 40mm equivalent focal length.
Bright f/1.7 maximum aperture benefits working in low-light conditions and also affords greater control over depth of field for working with selective focus techniques.
Two aspherical elements are used to reduce spherical aberrations and distortion in order to realize greater sharpness and resolution.
Individual elements have been multi-coated to effectively reduce lens flare and ghosting for improved contrast when working in strong lighting conditions.
Autofocus motor supports camera's contrast detection for precise focusing performance. AF can also be manually overridden for more fine-tuned control.
Pancake form factor measures just 1"-thick, making it ideal for everyday and travel use.
Rounded seven-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.

    Panasonic 20mm f/1.7 reviews

Lumix G 20mm f/1.7 II ASPH. Lens (Black) is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 110.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Slow focus This is a great lens for indoor photography. Nice small lens, good field of view, excellent construction and image quality is sharp. Unfortunately this lens focuses very slow. The Olympus Zuiko lenses all have blazing fast and silent focus. Not so with Panasonic. Something about the design, it hunt for focus with every shot. Even if you focus and lock in on the subject. If you refocus again it will bring it out of focus and lock in again. This is not a good lens if there is a lot of action as could occur with many indoor event photography. It is usable, but the 17mm Zuiko is probably a much better lens. I may sell this one to get that.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Outstanding Moderate Wide-Angle Lens This is a first class lens for MFT users. I already own the fine Olympus 17mm F1.8 lens, and needed a second lens in this range for my wife's E-P5. In a back to back comparison using my E-M1 (tripod and self-timer), the Lumix lens is noticeably sharper throughout the range of f-stops, when viewed at 100% on screen. No chatter during focusing was noticed on either body. Perhaps the Lumix is a bit slower at focusing, but not significantly so. Pancake size is appreciated by my wife. Slightly tighter field of view on the Lumix should be considered by all, and its lack of a focusing scale may be an issue for some advanced photographers.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I bought this lens twice. I have been taking photographs since I picked up my first camera while serving in the Army back in 1959. I shot weddings, worked for a newspaper and been published in magazines and this is one of the best lens that I have ever owned. A while back I gave my first 20mm lens to a son, but soon realized I had to have that lens. Today I shoot street and its size makes a difference in how I am seen. I don't look like a pro. I also own the 25mm, which is also a tack sharp lens as they both are, but that small size of the 20mm makes the difference for me. I mount this on my Panasonic GX7 and love how the work together. I have owned lens that cost three times as much that were not as good as this 20mm lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great lens for traveling light I bought this as a compact lens for an Olympus Pen-f I bought as a replacement for a previous PEN series camera to use as a walking-around camera when I don't want to tote a bigger Nikon. This lens is perfect in terms of size and excellent optical quality. I previously had an Olympus 14-42 ez pancake zoom lens that I intended for the same purpose, but I soon sold it because I was not happy with its soft optics nor with its quirky electronic zoom. This Lumix lens is better for my purpose because it is both compact and sharp and I have bigger lenses I can use when I want to trade off compactness for extra range and flexibility. Attached photo shows this lens on the Olympus camera compared with a Nikon with 35mm lens.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very Sharp lens! compact. pretty fast focus This lens is really sharp. I did some astro photography with it and it was sharper than my L series lenses on my 6D. Some have complained about slow focus and on my Olympus EPL-5 it was REALLY slow, but on my GX8, it was pretty fast! NOt as fast as the new 12-60, but still about as fast as the Canon lenses to me anyway! I'm not sure focus speed is a big issue on this since its not really a lens most would use for action photography or birds in flight, but I could see where there might be some situations where fast focus is a must. If so, It seems the newer software on cameras like the GX8 and 85 found a way to speed up the focus! ON othe rcameras its fairly slow, not a deal braker though in my opinion!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent results I bought this lens for my Olympus OM-D EM-10 specifically because I wanted a lens fast enough for astrophotography. I was very impressed with the results. This photo is a jpeg straight out of the camera. Focusing was slow sometimes, but worked well at night. Used the lens reset feature to set the lens to infinity. The lens does not slide on as easily. Probably due to the metal mount. Plastic mount lenses are easier to take on and off.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Extremely Sharp I purchased this lens for use with a recent purchase of the black magic micro cinema camera. I expected the lens to be sharp, just as all of the reviews say, but what I didn't expect was this incredible focus ring. It's not the distance throw of a true Cine lens, but a far enough throw that you can attach a gear to the ring, and a focus control on your rods, and obtain cinematic focus points. If you're doing film work with the micro or pocket cinema camera, don't expect this lens to fit all your needs. You'll rarely get a decent shot on a car mount because this lens is just not wide enough at the 2.8 crop.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent compact lens The Lumix 20mm f/1.7 is a sharp yet tiny lens that I use as my primary lens with an Olympus OM-D E-M10. The lens support Olympus's S-AF/MF, where turning the lumix's focus ring will override the camera's autofocus. The focusing is smooth and easy on both autofocus and manual focus mode. I chose this primarily because of's fantastic review, and the lens certainly lives up to the hype. The E-M10 + Lumix 20mm combo makes for a very compact system good for street or nighttime photography.
