ikan iLED312-v2 overview

  • 1Description

The ikan iLED312-v2 On-Camera Bi-Color LED Light with Digital Display is a compact battery powered daylight/tungsten balanced on camera light. It features a continuously variable color temperature between 3200 tungsten and 5600K daylight, and a built-in variable dimmer that can dim the lights output from 100 to 10%. Built into the light is an LCD display panel that shows a digital readout of the brightness level, color temperature of the light and features a battery gauge so you know how much power you have left.

The light produces a 60° beam angle, and includes both a removable four leaf barn door and diffusion gel. The light features slots for two Sony L-Series type batteries, and includes two batteries and a dual battery charger. A 1/4"-20 threaded hole allows you to mount the light to your camera's accessory shoe via the included ball adapter. You can also stack multiple iLED312 lights together using the interlocking rail system. An included soft carry case allows you to easily pack and carry your light unit, gel, barn doors and included accessories to and from shoots.

Variable Color Temperature & Dimming
The iLED312-v2 features 312 LEDs, and a single knob that allows you to vary the color temperature of the unit from 3200 to 5600K. A separate knob controls the dimming of the unit, with brightness range of 100 to 10%.
Digital Display Screen
The dimmer and color temperature settings are controlled by analog knobs, but the built-in digital readout on the built-in display screen allows you to match the output of other units or repeat setups, if you have to go back and get pick up shots. The display also incorporates a four-step battery gauge so you know how much battery power you have left.
Barn Doors
The included four sided removable barn doors are constructed so the doors can interlock together, limiting light leak from the edges, controlling light spill, and providing directionality to your light. The side doors feature articulating leafs that provide you a fairly wide range of adjustment while still controlling light leaks from the edges of the doors.
Although you can attach diffusion gel to the barn doors, the iLED312-v2 features a slot for the included precut diffusion sheet, that can be used with or without the barn doors in place. The diffusion is notched, and a safety tab engages the notch to prevent it from accidentally falling out.
The light unit features slots for two Sony L-Series type batteries of any capacity, and includes two NP550-type batteries. The light can run on one or two batteries, you can use the AC adapter that powers the included dual battery charger to power the light instead, via the small power connector on the back of the unit.
The light incorporates a 1/4"-20 threaded mounting hole in the bottom of the unit, and an interlocking rail system that allows you to stack up to three units vertically or horizontally, with a maximum of six lights.

    ikan iLED312-v2 reviews

iLED312-v2 On-Camera Bi-Color LED Light with Digital Display is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 47.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent option for videographers This light may not look like much, but it produces a significant amount of light when needed, and smaller amounts of light when that's needed. The battery life is longer than you'll need on a one day project. Quite impressive really. Initially I didn't think that the Digital display was a necessary feature. But when you're trying to sync up the color temperature with your camera, this comes in very very handy. It's also nice to know when you're thinking about your batteries and shoot time. I purchased one of these a few weeks ago and I intend to buy two more this week. I believe they are all that I'll need for most of my projects.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great light This is a very bright LED light that comes in a wonderful package. It packs down into a very convenient, well made zip up bag. I wish it used something other than the sony batteries though because I have a huge amount of Canon batteries. Still worth it though. It is very easy to use but I find that it is a little bit too large to sit on top of the camera. I feel like the talent will be off-put by its size. I have it on lighting stands anyhow. If you are looking for a very portable, well-made, bright bi-color LED light, I highly recommend it. I've have used it on a few music videos now. Worked great!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Small light with big potential I was looking for a compact solution to satisfy location lighting needs. Most of the units are overkill for what I wanted. I ran across this LED panel and so far couldn't be more happy! It's light weight and portable, it comes as a full kit with batteries and case and it is well built. Some of the other amazing features are that the lights are stackable if you need a bigger stronger source and it comes with barn doors which can double as a diffusion sock holder. The unit is bi colored and fully dimmable. The only thing that I don't like is the mount on the bottom for the camera. I think that it's more of a preference thing, but otherwise I'm pleased

Rated 3 out of 5 by from OK for Session Work The ILED312 works well for what it seems intended for - matching & augmenting existing light for relatively close subjects. My first use was for portable lighting on an EX3, which worked well, but battery life is a killer. Its difficult enough that it makes your camera top heavy but when coupled with about a couple of hours worth of battery time, its not worth the while. Note that the lights steadily fade as the batteries go. You'll need both batteries for well lit shots. On a plus note, the included diffuser was much appreciated by the numerous subjects. The second use was a photo shoot for some head shots. For this use it worked well on a tripod with the 1/4-20 threaded insert fitting right onto an old SLIK unit. Being able to match existing studio lighting along with the barn doors for spill control worked well. The fader knob is the on-off switch and works fine. The color temp knob controls the number of 5500K LEDs lit vs the quantity of 3200K LEDs which alternate every other row of lights. Max lighting level is achieved with positioning the knob halfway which is about 4300K. In summary it works OK. I think it will be durable unit with its metal body, but given its weight it is barely portable and given its battery life it is barely trustworthy for long events without backups. I don't think I'd recommend this for portable use - the main reason I bought it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Just right for my needs Sturdy construction - much better than my previous break-after-a-few-uses camera lights. Nice case, 2 batteries and metal barn doors. Not pro quality to take daily abuse and keep working but good enough for my casual use. Tested exposure in dark room with this light 6 feet from a grey card. ISO 800, 1/60 sec at f/3.5 for 3200K, f/5 for 4400K (midpoint with both sets of LEDs on) and f/4 at 5600K. You can clip together several of these lights to provide more output.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect small-ish LED light for a ton of video applications. I use this for interviews (mounted on-camera), and for seated interviews with two other identical lights. It works perfectly. All lights match each other perfectly, and it's great to have the option to change color temperature. The digital display is also very useful. I also like that it's a complete kit with case, ball head, batteries, and charger. It's just a great LED light. Enough said. (I would, however, recommend getting some extra batteries for longer remote shoots)

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very good to excellent video light. I am very happy with this video light. I love the dimming capabilities and the color change. It truely is a multi-purpose light. My only complaint is the cold shoe mount does not tighten completely. I will have to buy one that I am more confident in. I would recommend this light to anyone. I have used this light several times indoors and outdoors already.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice, Complete, On-Camera LED Package I have only used this product on one occasion so far so take this with a grain of salt. I am very pleased with the product and its value. This is a complete package including two rechargeable (Sony-type) batteries + a two battery charger, barn doors, a diffuser, cold shoe post, and even a smart carrying case. All seem to be pretty high quality. The LED unit also seems to be very high quality with receptacles for the two batteries, a digital display on the back which shows color temperature (which is variable), percentage of dimming, and battery life. Separate knobs control dimming and variable color temperature. The light was much brighter than expected and did a great job on the videos I shot. (Note that this is a pretty large LED panel for an on-camera unit so look elsewhere if you want something more petite and non-descript.) You can also buy additional LED panels. They are made to interlock compatibly with a slider on the side of each LED unit. Based on my limited experience (see above) battery life does not seem to be an issue with this unit. I have two criticisms so far, neither of which would dissuade me from purchasing this again. The documentation is pretty spare and rudimentary, diagramming only where pieces fit, but not how to use them. For example, it took me a little time to figure out that there is a tiny spring-loaded release knob that you have to pull on to slide the diffuser and barn doors in and out of their slots. There is nothing in the way of recommendations for use and care of the product. There is also no documentation for this unit found on the ikan website, probably because this is a relatively new product which they wanted to get on the market quickly. My second criticism is with the cold shoe post, which has a mini ball joint. While the post is sturdy enough, there should be a warning in the documentation because unless the cold shoe connection on the post is properly adjusted, the unit could easily slide out of a cold shoe mount which would obviously be bad. How to go about making this adjustment for a secure mount would be a nice thing to have in the documentation. I was able to get there, but only after some trial and error. Also the knob on the ball joint only controls vertical movement, but not horizontal rotation of the LED unit at all. Because of this it was easy for the LED to freely spin off target. I may look for a mount that dampens rotation at least somewhat. Lastly, a recommendation. Because this is such a large LED and sits so high, I did not feel comfortable mounting it in my camera shoe. I was a little concerned that maybe the high center of balance would exceed the design limitations of the shoe mount. Consequently, I mounted the unit in the cold shoe of a flash bracket (which itself was attached to the female tripod receptacle on my camera.) I felt more comfortable with that arrangement. Even better, I started looking for a relatively inexpensive rig to attach to along with, e.g., a shotgun microphone.
