    Vanguard 38 reviews

Up-Rise II 38 Messenger Bag is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 11.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Astonishingly good bag!!! This bag is astonishingly, almost shockingly, good. Especially considering it is from a company I had never heard of before. I own Think Tank, Tamrac, Domke, Kata, Lowepro and Tenba bags, and this one puts them all to shame. Here are the things I love about it: 1. High quality, rugged construction that will last (in fairness, most bags are pretty well-made these days) 2. Elegant, without being an obvious camera bag 3. Roomy: Despite being fairly compact, here is what I can fit in this bag (I don't always carry all of this): - Panasonic GX7 - Panasonic LX7 - 3(!) full-sized flash units with Sto-Fen diffusers attached (which makes them significantly taller) - AA battery charger (fits 4 batteries) - Panasonic battery chargers for each camera - A laptop with AC power brick and cord - 2x Pocket Wizard Plus-X plus cables - 3 small, tabletop flash stands - Optical slave triggers and cables - A mini tripod with mini ballhead (capable of holding either camera) - 20 spare AA batteries - 2 spare batteries for the GX7 - Nikon AI-S 135mm f/2.8 lens with m4/3 adapter - Tamron 90mm f/2.8 macro lens with m4/3 adapter - Sigma 60mm f/2.8 m4/3 lens - Olympus 25mm f/1.8 or Panasonic 20mm f/1.7 lens - Lens cloths - Extra memory cards and a USB SD card reader - Rain cover (included with bag) - Roll of gaffers' tape - Large flash bounce card - 2 ball bungees - All kinds of other stuff! Equally important, it has a good number of reasonably sized and located pockets that make it easy to organize and find anything I need. 4. Expandable/contractable: The main compartment can be expanded to fit more gear, or zipped (around the bottom) to make it smaller 5. Versatile: The interior compartment with dividers can be removed, allowing you to use it has a regular bag. I usually pack the back full of camera gear for travel. Then, when I arrive, I remove the interior compartment, toss a camera + lens in the bag (wrapped in a softwrap), then add a water bottle, light jacket and whatever else I need to go out for a walk. 6. Quick access: it has both the messenger-style large flap and, more importantly, A QUICK ACCESS ZIPPER from the top! It sounds stupid to be so excited about a zipper, but it is amazingly useful and fast in practice. 7. Bright orange interior: makes it easy to find items. 8. Rain cover included 9. Shoulder belt is removable. The included shoulder belt is actually high-quality, but I am addicted to UpStraps. Many messenger bags have non-removable shoulder belts. Fortunately, this one is removable so you can use your favorite strap. 10. Laptop / ipad compartment 11. Top handle - makes it easier and faster to grab off the ground or a table, or to pull out of a call. Again, it sounds dumb, but makes a real difference in practice. 12. Comfortable! Some messenger bags are essentially formless with no internal structure. Great for conforming to your body, but they offer little protection and too little structure to make packing and finding things convenient. Other messenger bags are overly padded and therefore rigid, similar to rugged laptop bags. This bag is a perfect compromise, flexible while maintain its structure. 13. Nice fabric. It's hard to explain, but the slightly webbed structure to the fabric makes it visually interested and more attractive to touch than conventional smooth nylon. 14. PRICE! For the price (actually, for ANY price), this bag offers incredible quality, design and flexibility. I never feel like bags are worth the money they cost...this one definitely is. Cons? Really only 2 minor nits: A. There is no webbed pocket on the sides for a water bottle or other item. This is inherent in the expandable/contractable zipper design for the main compartment. Frankly, I'd rather have that flexibility than a side mesh pocket (is it just me, or does the elastic always wear out on those pockets anyway, to the point where after a year they can't hold water bottles anyway?), but I figure I should point it out. B. No silencer flaps for the Velcro tabs on the main flap. Not a huge deal, since the top zipper allows for quick and quiet access, but silencer flaps would have made this bag 100% perfect! Best regards, Adam

Rated 4 out of 5 by from I Love it! This is a well constructed and functional camera bag. The shoulder strap is heavily padded and distributes the weight nicely across my shoulder. The exterior looks of this bag has received plenty of positive comments from co-workers that can't believe it is a camera bag. I'm currently using it to tote personal items with me. The removable camera gear insert is also of high quality and well padded. Inside, the orange accents and spacious pockets make it easy to find the item you are looking for. This bag will also expand when extra interior space is needed. The only drawback to this bag (hence 4 stars) is it's noisy velcro closures that secure the main flap to the front of the bag, however with the zipper access along the top there is no need to open it from the front. This bag is a bargain in my opinion. I have bags from other companies but I must say that this bag is exceptional. Thanks Vanguard and hats off to B&H for many years of great service!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Dual Duty I was looking for a messenger style bag that would fit a 70-200 f2.8 lens attached to the camera when I found this bag. I decided to order it after reading several reviews and I couldn't be happier. The bag fist my gripped 70d, 70-200 f2.8 attached, 600ex rt and several other lenses as well as most of the accessories you would want to keep with you. The shoulder strap is very nice and has a nice removable pad with a grip material in the middle of it to keep it from moving on you. The bag can expand to give you more room or to allow you to fit a laptop in with the rest of your gear. One of the best values of this bag is the ability to remove the photography gear padded compartment and use it as a regular messenger bag. The only complaint I have about the bag is that there are some elastic strips where the cover attaches to the main bag that change how the bag opens at the top. Not a big deal, just annoying.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Superb Bought this after seeing the dpreview on the UpRise 33 bag. Now has become the UpRise2. Since any bag you buy you always want a bigger one, I bought the UpRise2 38. Not a thing to complain about! It is beautifully constructed and with smart, but not flashy, styling. The expandable feature comes in very handy when I want to carry extra items but returns to being svelte when I don't need that feature. Just the right amount of pockets, none of those fiddly, too small for anything, pockets that other bags have. The orange lining is a big bonus for finding small items(let's face it, most photo related items are black)that might have fallen to the bottom of the bag. The interior is very easy to customize the way you want, or just remove all the dividers if you are not using it as a photo bag. Laptop compartment is nicely padded, the shoulder strap is first class and the bag has excellent balance either on your shoulder or being carried by the handstrap. I could go on, but I won't, just an outstanding product! And, as always, B&H Photo is a joy to deal with from the salespeople through the shipping.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It's a winner I used to use the Crumpler million dollars homes, which I loved. I needed a new one but couldn't find the combo I wanted so I tried the Up-Rise II 38: I carry a massive Canon 1Ds Mk III (the one with theintegratedvertical grip) and massive lenses (EF 85/1.2, EF 50/1.2) and I was so surprised by the amount of gear I am able to fit in this bag, and all feeling safely protected. I especially like a few features absent from the Crumpler line: for example, there's a top zipper giving me access to the camera without opening the velcro (which, you're read somewhere else is very noisy), there is the strap on the back of the bag securing it around the retractable handle of a carry on on wheels, the whole camera compartment is removable, which transforms the bag into a day-bag in an instant, and multiple pockets everywhere...) I can fit in this bag: a full pro body with a large 50/1.2 lens mounted, the massive battery charger, an 85/1.2, a 100/2.0, a 24/2.8, a smartphone tripod Giotto Mmoire T2, a tripod ballhead, a 15" MacBookPro and its charging cable, many many accessories, etc. What it's missing: a strapping system to attach my small carbon fiber tripod to the side or the bottom of the bag. I do love this bag, it is very versatile, very well built, comfortable to drag around all day, innocuous (it could be a messenger bag) and it does not feel too big, yet can carry an incredible amount of gear.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from EXCELLENT BAG The quality of construction is excellent. While this bag is a bit larger than a typical messenger bag, it also affords more room (is there ever enough?) and flexibility with its zip-open expansion if needed. The trade-off for that is the loss of outside side pockets for a tripod, which I miss, but I will improvise as I feel the trade-off was worth it. I won't be redundant to them, but as other reviewers have well noted, there are plenty of storage pockets, etc. And, as always, perfect service from B&H.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from What a BAG! This bag is comfortable to lug around, even when packed with gear. I stuffed in my 15 macbook pro, nikon d500 with 18-300mm and 35mm lenses, flash, batteries, filters... and a few more odds and ends... with no problems. Love the removable insert, converts the camera bag to a work briefcase in seconds.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Well made product and very fuctional Very well made, I travel a lot and it serves my need for a brief case and a camera bag. I can put my camera , computer and papers with enough room for added objects. The only complaint is they did not put a pocket for a water bottle or they would of had a 5 star rating
