Nikon SB-300 Overview

  • 1Description

The Nikon SB-300 AF Speedlight is a lightweight on-camera flash that is compatible with Nikon cameras featuring i-TTL support. The SB-300 has a guide number of 59' at ISO 100 and a coverage of a 27mm lens with FX-format cameras. Additionally, the flash has a distance range of 2-66'.

The SB-300 ensures proper exposure and color balance with i-TTL metering. When used with cameras featuring Nikon's Creative Lighting System you can access advanced controls like rear-curtain sync and fill flash.

Bouncing light off a ceiling or wall is made possible with a 120° tilting head. This provides soft, even light on your subject. For security during operation, the flash will click into position at 120°, 90°, 75°, 60°, and when facing directly ahead. The flash also offers slow, first and second curtain sync for more creative control over your light.

Weighing only 3.4 oz, its compact design makes traveling with this flash easy. The SB-300 operates on two AAA batteries which will provide a recycle time between 3.5-30 seconds and it comes with the Nikon SS-DC1 Soft Case for storage.

Creative control methods include fill-flash, front-curtain with slow sync, rear-curtain sync, and rear-curtain with slow sync
Flash head provides wide-angle coverage for 18mm lenses in DX-format cameras or 27mm in FX-format

    Nikon SB-300 Reviews

SB-300 AF Speedlight is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 69.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Lightweight Flash Unit I used the Nikon SB 300 with Eneloop AAA battery this Christmas for taking our family pictures and have taken 520 pictures without any hitch. Each and every shot was provided with the right amount of light to achieve the creative exposure that I was aiming for. Great for bounce lighting. One thing that I wished it has the capability of, is for it to be able to swivel from side to side. For its price range, its a very good flash unit for those seeking an upgrade from an on-camera flash and a user- friendly one. Money well spent. The Eneloop batteries provided enough juice to keep up with my fast pace of taking candid shots with yet power to spare . I am well pleased with both products.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Really like this flash I bought this flash to add more light and get some versatility with my photos. I am just the average mom that takes a million photos, but with a good camera, I like my photos to come out great! This flash is small which is great because we travel a lot and doesn't take a lot of room in my camera bag. I like the flexibility of the flash, I can move it up if I want the flash to be a bit indirect and bounce, or I can use it direct on the subject to increase brightness of a room. This is a very nice flash for any general photographer. I plan to experiment with it a little more in the near future!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Perfect for the Nikon Df I was looking for a small strobe to sit atop the Df and internet searches suggested an SB400. Well, that one has been discontinued and the remaining few have taken off in price. So, I tried its successor with the AAA batteries rather than AAs. Frankly, with the Df, I don't need a flash that often, so the AAA batteries equal less weight and a more compact size. It easily fits the front pouch of a Billingham L2 bag. For environmental snaps in a normal home, I tilt the head all the way back, bouncing the light from the ceiling and behind me - nice smooth coverage. Since it does NOT rotate, I modify my shooting style for portrait orientation and bounce it off a wall. The small size is perfect for the Df. If it rotated, it would gain a fifth star. Overall, VERY pleased with performance, including relatively quick recycle times.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Good Choice For Casual Use This simple and basic Speedlight is quite light and compact, taking little room in a gear bag and adding nothing significant to the overall weight of the camera and lens. Controls are simple - just on and off, so no need to memorize complex functions. The flash head adjusts vertically for bounce, but not side-to-side. In the lowest position it fires from a bit higher than the pop-up flash on my D90, helping to reduce red-eye even without bouncing. Power isn't as great as larger units, but it works very well for casual indoor and outdoor use, providing the advantages of diffused light (when bounced) with minimal complexity, weight, or size. Ideal for travel when you don't anticipate needing flash often or for anything too challenging.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very light and compact This flash is very light and compact and serves as substitute for the built-in flash of your camera. Tested it and the result is not as efficient as the pro grade SB910. If you are looking for a top-grade, heavy, bulky, or pro-level strobe, then go for the SB910. The two-AAA batt source are not an issue but make sure you have enough back up. The flash is perfect to use on sunny pictorial day to reduce shadow formations of objects.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great for the Price.... I'm an amature photographer but for what it's worth I really like this speedlight. It's small, compact and fits into your shirt pocket. I took several pictures of the same indoor scene when I got it using the various bounce flash angles and was very pleased with the ability of this flash to light the subject in different ways. I give it 4 stars because I can't comment on longevity of the unit.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from I would not buy this product again. I bought this speed light strictly for family/friend snapshots, like dinner a few nights ago, where it was intended to just be a fill flash for shots where the subjects were being shot at sunset from fairly close range. Less than 10 feet. The flash is generally inadequate for the purpose. It doesn't have enough power. And yes, I did wait long enough for it to recycle. I was able to get a few useable shots. I guess I'll keep it because of its small size which puts it into the better than nothing category, but it is not much better.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Little Gem Super compact size sits nicely on my DF. I love the iTTL communication between the camera and flash which give spot on exposure. Also, after only ever using built in flashes (on my Nikon D50) I love the bounce ability of this unit; the results are amazing. Incredibly simple to use, easy to carry around and yet packing quite a good punch in medium sized rooms.
