    Kodak Zi12 Reviews

Zi12 Playfull Dual Camcorder is rated 3.8 out of 5 by 6.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Kind of strange Having had the Playful Ze1 which I liked, I thought I'd get the Zi12 while they're still available. I've found the device to be very well built, and it takes good video and still photos. Here's the problem I have with it. I can not understand why Kodak would have designed this so that it only records images or video correctly while holding it horizontally instead of vertically like most similar handheld camcorders. Even if it auto rotated that would have been fine. As it is, you are far better off getting a conventional compact digital camera since you really have to use both hands to use it properly, and you'd have a lot more flexibility in everyday use. Just strange.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Why Kodak is going out of business Kodak just announced they are going out of the digital camera business. They will support their present products for one year only. This product was Kodak's last chance to survive - and they blew it. The basic idea was excellent - as is the hardware. But the software sucks. You are forced to use their Share Button App - which isn't even installed. I had to spend hours updating the memory card to make it work. The online manual does not even mention a switch on the side which says auto/effects/scenes. On the plus side it does take good photos and videos using the default settings. The digital zoom works surprising well. The small size makes it easy to carry and use.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from handy video & snapshot recorder I bought this camera to take on a trip to Ireland and to shoot footage at home. Both video and stills are very sharp and the many settings - scene and effects - give you some control over the look of both video and photos. Panoramic shots worked out great, very easy to do, and most functions are just a step away. Getting to the special settings is not so easy however. The button on top slides from auto to effects to scenes and it doesn't do it easily. May be hard for someone with larger hands to manage. Then once you enter the menu it takes several presses of the manual button to get to what you need. If you don't care much about changing the look auto works just fine. Camera feels nice in the hand and is good looking! It's about the size of a smartphone only a bit thicker. The lens has a cover that opens and closes automatically and there's a jack for a plug-in microphone. Both pretty cool features.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very Good For HD VIdeo, Slow Motion I use this for home movies and for experimental art videos. The quality of the HD video is very good for a point and shoot pocket camera and quite good in available low light situations. The slow motion is why I bought this camera and it is nice. The 120fps is great. The 240 fps not so good, the image kind of wavers but it is still much better than most 240fps video for consumers. The wide angle lens is nice for many video taking needs. For photos it can be nice but tends to be a little too wide for my taste. The digital zoom is surprisingly good with a lot of light, and quite a bit of noise in low light. The long exposure and processing for the night setting is not so good but can have appealing results some of the time. The flash (which I don't normally use) is nice in many situations. The different filters are interesting, some I like a lot and others not so much. The sepia is quite beautiful, which is unusual in an in camera consumer effect. I also like the Tri X filter. The normal l color setting is nice. The other filters, kodachrome, kodacolor, Tmax etc I don't like so much. I wish the camera could zoom with the slow motion modes. I also wish I could use the filter settings with the slow motion. It's odd that the tripod socket is on the side of the camera. The macro focus photo mode is really good. All in all the camera is quite wonderful and within it's limits can do really nice things.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Kodak knocks it out of the park, a little too late This amazing video recorder/camera has so may features that make it attractive, I don't kno where to start. This will be the closest Kodachrome imitator you will find in any camera. the film settings for stills I find are the best of their kind. In video mode the low light performance is very good for the price range and the slow motion settings are a blast to experiment with. I was driving down an abandoned section of Route 66 in a light fog, and the ZI12 was resolving more contrast that my naked eyes were as I was filming my drive. It lacks manual controls, and has audio recording that is complicated by vibration and variances in signals. I got an external microphone (most don't offer the option to connect external mics)and the problem was solved. This was produced while Kodak was having financial troubles and was replaced by a different model when they emerged from the financial challenges. I really enjoy this camcorder.Sharp with great colors and low distortion. I own a couple of full frame video cameras as well as a APS-C removable lens camcorder, but when I get tired of lugging all that equipment around, this is my go to device. I recorded a wedding with a combination of the ZI12 (wide perspective) and a full frame recorder with Zeiss glass (closer perspectives)and then color corrected and complied the footage. It turned out great. I really hope the newer models are this good. Thanks for reading.
