A 3-chip SXRD imaging system makes the VPL-HW40ES Full HD Home Theater ES Projector from Sony ideal for applications where picture quality is paramount. With a low 1700 lumens brightness, this projector is all about strong contrast and strong color. This is further enhanced by the SXRD chips, which outperform many competing DLP and LCD imaging systems - including comparable LCoS imagers. Because it is designed with the potentially limited space of the home environment in mind - not to mention to enable rear projection - it features 1.6x optical zoom plus vertical and horizontal lens shift, giving it significant installation flexibility.

Full HD and 3D sources can be accommodated by the VPL-HW40ES, thanks to its two HDMI ports. In addition, there is one VGA and one Component video port for analog video devices and computers with analog outputs. For synchronization with 3D glasses, there is a built-in IR sync emitter plus an RJ-45 connector to plug in external sync devices (glasses and synchronizer available separately). For integration with automation systems like Crestron, there is an RS-232C port, plus there is an IR port for using a separately available IR extender.

3-Chip SXRD Imaging System
SXRD (Silicon X-tal Reflective Display) is a type of 3-chip LCD technology - similar to LCoS - based on reflection rather than passing light through the chip. The design maintains a uniform, ultra-thin liquid crystal cell gap - helping to avoid the "screen door effect" frequently perceived with conventional 3LCD systems. Furthermore, by passing light through the crystal layer twice, thinner materials can be used enabling a better contrast performance than standard LCoS
Full HD Projection
This projector features Full HD (1920 x 1080) resolution, which results in a 16:9 "widescreen" native aspect ratio - the standard for HDTVs. In addition, the projector can show 4:3 content, either by adding black bars to the sides (pillaring), stretching the image to fit, or cropping the image. The following aspect ratio modes are provided:
  • Wide Zoom
  • Zoom
  • Normal
  • Stretch
  • V Stretch (anamorphic zoom mode)
  • Squeeze
Up to 240 Hz 3D Projection
View 3D content from a variety of sources, including Blu-ray players (separately available active 3D glasses required). It can also up-convert 2D signals to 3D. An IR sync is built in, plus an RJ-45 sync port allows you to use an external sync device if required. The following 3D formats are supported:
  • Frame Packing
  • Side by Side
  • Over Under
Vertical and Horizontal Lens Shift
Lens shift performs a similar function to keystone correction, allowing the image to be correctly aligned if vertically or horizontally off-center relative to screen. The advantage of lens shift over keystone correction is that it is an optical adjustment, and does not impact image qualify

VPL-HW40ES Full HD 3D SXRD Home Theater Projector is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 1.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Movie Theater in my living room I don't think I can ever watch cable or a movie again on a regular TV. I have it currently set up at about 120 and this thing is so sharp and you can't hear it unless you put your ear to it. Don't forget to have a sound bar or something for audio. How I set it up: I have 3 HDMIs going into my sound bar then a HDMI out from the sound bar to the projector.
