The B+W 82mm XS-Pro Kaesemann High Transmission Circular Polarizer MRC-Nano Filter helps to reduce reflections and glare by filtering out light that has become polarized due to reflection from a non-metallic surface. The light from the sun naturally becomes partially polarized due to reflecting off electrons in air molecules, causing the light to scatter into what appears as haze. A polarizing filter arranges, and filters, this directionally polarized light perpendicularly to the reflected light, allowing for the absorption of much of this light. This results in a noticeable reduction of glare and reflections from non-metallic surfaces and an increase in the saturation of skies and foliage.

A circular polarizer only differs from a linear polarizer in that it contains a quarter wave plane in addition to the linear polarizing filter. The addition of this quarter wave plane is to circularly polarize the linearly polarized light for the use of auto focus and exposure functions. Due to how the light is broken down and filtered with a linear polarizer, auto focus and exposure accuracy become skewed during use. When the light becomes circularly polarized, it permits the use of these functions.

Kaesemann High Transmission Circular (HTC) polarizing filters are fitted with polarizing foils which provide 99.5% light transmission that are cemented between plano-parallel optical glass. The resulting sandwich is then precision-polished to achieve accurate plano-parallel surfaces. Finally, they are edge-sealed to protect the foil against humidity.

To prevent internal ghosting and reflections, each glass surface includes multiple layers of anti-reflection coating. This Multi-Resistant Coating (MRC) also offers further protection to the filter substrate and helps it to stay clean for longer than with uncoated filters. The Nano coating associated with XS-Pro filters provides an additional eighth layer over the MRC, resulting in an improved beading effect when in contact with water for greater cleaning efficiency.

B+W filters are constructed from Schott glass for increased optical clarity and color fidelity. This filter features a thin brass filter ring to minimize the potential for vignetting while enhancing durability and jamming prevention. To further reduce the possibility of vignetting when this filter is in use, the filter ring's outside diameter is slightly larger than the actual thread size. This may prevent the use of some lens manufacturer bayonet hoods.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Filter ! I purchased the? B+W 82mm XS-Pro Kaesemann High Transmission Circular Polarizer MRC-Nano Filter after using the same model filter on my 77mm lenses. This polarizer is well constructed, has virtually no color cast and does a beautiful job darkening skies, bring out contrasts and removing glare from reflective water. What also sold me on this model is the fact that the filter also has threads on the outside of the lens, allowing me to use a rectangular filter system attached to this circular polarizer. Years ago, I had purchased a filiter with no outside threads, and it was useless when I needed to used an ND or Grad ND system

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Filter Do not waste your time searching for the perfect filter. I think I found it. I just upgraded to a 16-35mm f2.8 and needed a polarizing filter. Picked up a Luminesque CPL. What a tragedy. Cost me hours of post processing cleaning up blue, magenta, purple and green color casts. I use a polarizing filter on interiors to eliminate reflections on wood floors and countertops. Yes, the Luminesque filter would do that, but left me with all those color casts. I even had magenta in the sky on exterior photos. I ordered this filter and tried it out today. No color casts. White balance with the filter vs not having the filter was very similar. This will save me hours of post processing. Even at 16mm I found there was no vignetting using a Canon 5d3 and 16-35mm f2.8

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Polarizer I've used a variety of polarizers and for the most part they all do their job. The most annoying problem with many is they tend to bind on the threaded portion of the lens. It doesn't matter how carefully you thread the filter, they seem to bind. This filter doesn't have that problem. Most likely its because there isn't any of the aluminum to bind. As far as performance, this filter is superb. The build is excellent and the color cast is also excellent. Yes it's pricey, but for the ease of use and performance if you use a polarizer a lot, it's worth the price.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Top quality product -- best circular polarizer I've used I was looking for a circular polarizer and found a really good in-depth review here: http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Circular-Polarizer-Filters.aspx that explained how they work and what to look for in a quality filter. I had previously tried a couple of others that felt cheap and smudged easily and took a lot of effort to clean. The second you take the B+W XS-Pro out of the case you can tell it's a quality product from the weight and the feel of the ring. Rotation is smooth, the glass is quality and easy to clean, and the results are far superior to cheaper products. You're going to pay a premium for sure, but if you are working with a nice lens then it's definitely (for me) worth spending a few extra bucks to make sure you get the shot you want. Highly recommend and will be purchasing for all of my lenses.

I bought the lens slightly used which comes with a hoya pro1 clear protector. while I use hoya on my 28-300mm fine, the one on 24-70mm has noticeable color difference. put on B+W, it was so clear. no any difference with or without it on. tried different lighting conditions. very happy. it's not much more expensive than hoya. so nobrainer.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from All that was promised but tricky to attach This CPL does what it says. It is fairly thin so I've noticed no vignetting at 24mm on a FF camera. The coating make cleaning quite easy. In fact, a recent excursion at the coaast yieded a nice covering of salt spray on the filter which I literally rinsed with tap water then clened with a microfibercloth and some lens cleaning solution. The only reason I did not give it 5 stars is that it is a little tricky to screw onto my 24-70 lens. Inn fairness, that might be due to the lens threads just as much as the filter threads but I make sure to be very creful when attaching or detaching this item since I'd hate to drop itand break the glass. I have filters from another company that have better grips in the rim to make the attaching and detaching easier. But otherwise the optical quality of the B&W glass is outstanding

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Stays on my lens when outdoors. If you learn to use one you'll continue to use it. Maybe not for portraits but everything outdoors it does make a difference. I shoot a lot of outdoor car and motorcycle shows and the CP is great for dropping glare and reflections. Colors are more saturated as well. Landscapes are richer and if you are shooting water it's almost a must.
