When you’re looking for a computer monitor, you look for a fast refresh rate, something sized to fit your needs, and an aesthetically pleasing design. You may be replacing a desktop monitor, docking your small-screen laptop to view images in a larger format, or looking to enhance your desktop experience with dual monitors.
ASUS now has a solution that gives you greater flexibility when making your choice. Their MB168B+ USB-powered monitor lets you use an available USB 3.0 port to transfer the video source and power the monitor—with no extra power brick to carry around in your bag. Imagine setting up your laptop on a business meeting with a handy 15.6” Full HD 1920 x 1080 monitor on the tabletop. You now have the freedom to expand your presentations to another viewing area. It’s also great for design and illustration work, where your primary laptop screen may not have enough room to fully represent the details of your artistic vision.
Photographers will love the flexibility of displaying their work beyond their laptop as well. The dual-monitor setup also appeals to creative constructionists who rely on side-by-side comparison for image viewing or even video editing.
The monitor weighs 1.76 lb and is only 0.8mm thick, making it a true portable device. At 15.6 inches, it will fit into standard laptop carrying cases. It includes an ambient light sensor that will adjust the screen brightness according to your room’s light source, which is perfect when you're trying to conserve battery power on a laptop. It also uses an auto sensor for rotation, so you can use it in portrait or landscape mode.
To make things even easier, the included protective-sleeve carrying case doubles as a monitor stand, so you can adjust your display to suit your needs. The monitor is finished in the sleek and durable metallic concentric-circle pattern that is associated with the ASUS Zen products.
Although the monitor uses a USB 3.0 cable and port for maximum efficiency, you can use a USB 2.0 port and cable—but the caveat is that with less power and speed, some brightness and image quality problems may surface. Since USB 2.0 is being slowly phased out from new computers, many will not be using this in USB 2.0 mode.
ASUS also incorporates its EzLink Technology into the monitor. With EzLink, graphics processing can be off-loaded from the PC and loaded onto the dedicated hardware in the monitor. This means that up to five separate monitors can be run from one source (provided the source has enough USB 3.0 ports) regardless of the source’s graphics limitations. So if your PC has five USB 3.0 ports, it can run five of these displays simultaneously. It also automatically restores window positions as monitors are disconnected and reconnected, and automatically rotates the images between landscape and portrait mode.
There was a time when an extra monitor meant a substantial investment in cash and cables. ASUS just offered the flexibility, style, and productivity of dual monitors to the computing community—and they will love it.
