If you’re a media professional, content creator, or small businesses running Final Cut Pro, Lightroom, and other I/O intensive applications, and you’re looking to upgrade to Thunderbolt™ 3, look no further than the Drobo 5D3 5-Bay Thunderbolt 3 Enclosure. This DAS (Direct-Attached Storage) is well suited for those who quickly need to back up lots of data, and is equipped with five 3.5" SATA III drive bays and two Thunderbolt 3 ports, which are only compatible with Mac. Thunderbolt 3 is capable of bi-directional data transfer speeds of up to 40 Gb/s, and support the daisy-chaining of six devices, including one 5K display or two 4K displays. There is also one USB 3.0 Type-C port, which is compatible with Windows and Mac, and transfers data at speeds up to 5 Gb/s.
The Drobo 5D3 is also equipped with a Drobo Accelerator Bay, which uses a separately sold mSATA SSD to boost system performance. It accomplishes this by placing data that is read or written into SSD storage. While the data is active, it is stored in the SSD, and will be moved back to the hard drive tier as its use decreases. Additionally, BeyondRAID technology enables single or dual-drive redundancy, while an included rechargeable battery helps to protect any data stored in the 5D3’s cache. If there were to be a sudden power loss, the battery allows the Drobo to stay powered long enough for the cached data to be written to non-volatile storage.
For Windows and Mac users looking for fast and reliable storage for use in photo and video editing environments, the Drobo 5D3 is a worthy option.
