Drobo has given its storage solutions a major upgrade with the Drobo 8D, which has been built with eight 3.5" SATA drive bays, allowing users to store more data on their Drobo than previously possible. Available as a diskless enclosure or pre-populated with storage configurations of 24TB (6 x 4TB), 32TB (8 x 4TB), 48TB (8 x 6TB), 64TB (8 x 8TB), 80TB (8 x 10TB), or 96TB (8 x 12TB), the Drobo 8D is designed to meet the needs of data-intensive workflows and SMBs that require high-capacity storage solutions for Apple Final Cut Pro X, Adobe Lightroom, and more. It is equipped with two 40 Gb/s Thunderbolt™ 3 ports and is compatible with systems running macOS 10.12, and later, with the HFS+ file system. While one of the Thunderbolt™ 3 ports is used to connect the 8D to your compatible Mac, the other one can be used to daisy-chain up to six Thunderbolt™ devices, including one 5K display or two 4K displays. The Thunderbolt™ 3 ports also provide 15W of charging power for Thunderbolt™ 3 laptops.

Drobo 8D 8-Bay Thunderbolt™ 3 Enclosure

To help complement the speeds of Thunderbolt™ 3, the 8D has been built with Drobo’s Accelerator Bay, which uses a separately sold 2.5" SATA SSD in a dedicated 2.5" drive bay. This boosts system performance by storing your frequently used data on the SSD. SSDs can also be used in the front bays of the 8D for Data-Aware Tiering, allowing for transactional data to migrate to the SSDs. This helps ensure that both reads and writes are accelerated. Additionally, BeyondRAID technology enables single or dual-drive redundancy, while an included rechargeable battery helps to protect any data stored in the 8D’s cache. If there were to be a sudden power loss, the battery allows the Drobo to stay powered long enough for the cached data to be written to non-volatile storage.
