The MacBook Air may have gotten first dibs on the 4th-generation Haswell Intel® Core™ processors back in June, but Apple hasn’t forgotten about the MacBook Pro with Retina Display. Both the 13.3” and 15.4” models received updates on October 22 and are ready to take your Mac experience to the next level.
The 13.3” MacBook Pro with Retina Display has dual-core 4th-gen Haswell Intel Core i5 processors, with stock speeds from 2.4GHz to 2.6GHz. The 4th-gen Haswell processors utilize low voltage for improved battery life without having to sacrifice performance. This means you’ll be able to take your power-hungry apps on the road. Intel Hyper-Threading technology allows you to enhance performance by letting each core handle multiple tasks simultaneously, which means the dual cores on the Haswell Intel Core i5 can be pushed to four virtual cores. This allows for better multitasking and overall performance. You can also over-clock the processor anywhere from 2.9GHz to 3.1GHz. Coupled with the dual-core 4th-gen Haswell Intel Core i5 processors on the 13.3” MacBook Pro is integrated Intel Iris Graphics, which boosts performance by up to 90 percent compared to the previous generation. With Intel Iris Graphics, you’ll be able to handle both everyday tasks and graphics-intensive creative apps with ease, as well as output to an external display or two.
The 15.4” MacBook Pro with Retina Display takes performance to the next level with quad-core 4th-gen Crystalwell Intel Core i7 processors. With stock speeds from 2.0GHz to 2.3GHz, the Intel Hyper-Threading technology allows you to push the quad cores into eight virtual cores. You can also over-clock the processors from 3.2GHz to 3.5GHz, thanks to Intel Turbo Boost 2.0 technology. With fast quad-core performance, you’ll be able to make quick work of even the most complex tasks in professional apps, such as Final Cut Pro, thanks to its 6MB L3 cache. The quad-core 4th-gen Crystalwell processors utilize Intel Iris Pro Graphics, which provides up to 128MB of embedded memory to accelerate the processor- and graphics-intensive tasks by acting as an ultra-fast cache. For even more impressive graphics performance needs, choose the 15.4” model that combines the power of Intel Iris Pro Graphics with a dedicated NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M graphics card with 2GB of GDDR5 discrete memory. The NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M has twice the video memory of its predecessor and allows for more frames per second in 3D games and greater speed and responsiveness for your HD video projects.
The MacBook Pro with Retina Display will have an upgrade in ports as well, with dual Thunderbolt 2 ports. Thunderbolt 2 can provide bidirectional throughput of up to 20Gbps, which is twice as fast as its predecessor. And since each Thunderbolt 2 port allows you to daisy-chain up to six peripherals, you can go all out and plug in up to 12 external devices via Thunderbolt 2 alone. Dual USB 3.0 ports are still available, as well as an HDMI port. An SDXC media card slot is also available. The MacBook Pro with Retina Display also moved to PCIe-based flash storage for performance that is 1.6 times faster than its predecessor.
The storage of the MacBook Pro with Retina Display has gotten a bump in performance as well. Moving to PCIe-based flash storage, you’ll notice a difference in your Mac experience. With up to 60 percent faster read and write speeds than the previous-generation MacBook Pro, you’ll be able to import huge photo libraries in a flash. On the 15.4” models, the combination of PCIe-based flash storage, quad-core 4th-gen Crystalwell Intel Core i7 processors and high-performance graphics will allow you to multitask quickly and efficiently as well as perform even the most demanding tasks in Final Cut Pro with ease. You’ll be able to have up to 1TB of PCIe-based flash storage so you’ll be able to keep all your important files with you. Flash storage also doesn’t have any moving parts, which makes it more durable and quiet than its traditional mechanical hard disk drive counterpart.
The MacBook Pro with Retina Display also gets a boost in wireless connectivity with 802.11ac Wi-Fi support. With an emphasis on mobile computing, 802.11ac Wi-Fi allows you to achieve speeds of up to 1300Mbps, which is approximately three times faster than the 802.11n Wi-Fi standard, especially when you connect the MacBook Pro to an 802.11ac Wi-Fi base station, such as an AirPort Extreme or an AirPort Time Capsule. Bluetooth 4.0 technology is also available so you can wirelessly connect Bluetooth-compatible devices, such as a wireless mouse.
As its name suggests, the MacBook Pro still maintains the Retina Display. The 13.3” model has 2560 x 1600 native resolution, at 227 pixels per inch, with more than 4 million colors. The 15.4” model has 2880 x 1800 native resolution, at 220 pixels per inch, with more than 5 million colors. Both Retina Displays are LED-backlit and have IPS (in-plane switching) technology for uniform color, higher contrast ratio, and wider 178° viewing angles.
Every MacBook Pro with Retina Display is available with the Mac OS X 10.9 Mavericks operating system preinstalled. Also, Apple is providing free copies of iLife and iWork apps with each new purchase of a Mac or iOS device. iLife contains multimedia apps like iMovie, iPhoto, and GarageBand. iWork provides productivity apps like Pages, Numbers, and Keynote.
The 13.3” and 15.4” models of the MacBook Pro with Retina Display with Haswell and Crystalwell Intel Core processors are available now.
