Palm-Sized and Super-Fast: Samsung T5 Portable SSDs

0Share

Building upon the success of its T3 SSDs, Samsung has improved its category of portable SSDs with the T5 series. These new drives come equipped with USB 3.1 and 3-bit 3D V-NAND MLC flash technology to provide leading-edge transfer speeds. When compared to the 450 MB/s reads and writes from the previous T3 line, the T5 portable SSDs transfer data faster by delivering 540 MB/s read speeds and 515 MB/s write speeds. To achieve these speeds, the host system must have a USB 3.1 connection with 10 Gb/s speeds and UASP mode enabled. For digital storage space, the T5 edition offers 250GB, 500GB, 1TB, and 2TB capacities—just like the previous version. There’s also AES 256-bit encryption available for safeguarding sensitive data. With the insides examined, let’s move on to the exterior of the T5.

The T5 maintains the same palm-sized design as the T3, but it now comes in two color choices. The 1TB and higher capacities feature a black housing, while the 250GB and 500GB storage options come in blue. Another notable difference is the inclusion of an additional cable that lets you connect the T5 directly to a typical USB port, without needing to purchasing an adapter. Samsung still ships a reversible USB Type-C cable, granting you with a “connect on the first try” experience with a USB Type-C port.

With these new advancements on board, Samsung has provided internal drive performance in an external form factor and made the T5 a storage device that is well suited for content creation establishments, IT organizations, and other types of environments where quick access to portable data is needed. As a self-powered, single drive system, you probably won’t find anything better; but you can let me know in the Comments section, below, or check the rest of B&H’s portable drives for one that is faster.
