Sony VAIO Notebooks Get Fit; Sony VAIO Ultrabooks™ Go Pro

Sony has started to simplify the product names of their notebook computers, which helps avoid the confusion of long model numbers. Now, Sony VAIO notebooks are moving toward having a more recognizable name for certain series of models. Sony took the first steps with the Sony VAIO Duo Ultrabooks and the Sony VAIO Tap 20 All-in-One Desktop Computers. Now, Sony VAIO notebooks get Fit and Sony VAIO Ultrabooks go Pro.

Sony offers a large variety of system configurations with the Sony VAIO Fit series. The most notable difference is the choice between a 14” screen and a 15.5” screen. The 14” models come equipped with HD+ 1600 x 900 native resolution, while the 15.5” models feature Full HD 1920 x 1080 native resolution. You can also choose between a regular notebook display and a capacitive touchscreen. The select models with a capacitive touchscreen allow you to take full advantage of the installed Windows 8 (64-bit) operating system and its integrated multi-touch gestures. Processors are available in Ivy Bridge Intel® Core™ i3, Core i5 or Core i7 variations. For RAM, you can go the standard 4GB or opt for faster performance with 8GB. Storage is available in 500GB, 750GB, or 1TB 5400rpm hard drives. The Sony VAIO Fit series is also available in a variety of colors, such as white, black, and pink.

While the rest of the Sony VAIO Fit notebook computers have integrated Intel HD Graphics 4000, the Sony VAIO Fit 15e SVF1521KCXB 15.5” Multi-Touch Notebook Computer has a dedicated NVIDIA GeForce GT 740M graphics card with 1GB of dedicated memory for high graphical performance. All Sony VAIO Fit notebook computers come with a SuperMulti DVD burner, 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0+HS technology, near field communication (NFC), and the Windows 8 (64-bit) operating system installed.

We first announced the Sony VAIO Pro Ultrabooks on B&H InDepth in early June. The Sony VAIO Pro Ultrabooks feature fourth-generation Haswell Intel Core i5 and i7 processors. The Haswell CPUs utilize low voltage for better energy efficiency and extended battery life. The Sony VAIO Pro Ultrabooks are also ultraportable. The 13.3” model weighs about 2.34 pounds while the 11.6” model can weigh as little as 1.92 pounds. The Sony VAIO Pro also features Sony’s TRILUMINOS display, the same technology found in Sony’s top BRAVIA HDTV models. The TRILUMINOS display offers a wider color range than traditional notebook displays, providing more accurate reds, blues, and greens.

Both the 11.6” and 13.3” models feature Full HD 1920 x 1080 native resolution so you’ll be able to play 1080p Full HD content natively without upscaling. The Sony VAIO Pro also utilizes Sony’s super-resolution picture engine, X-Reality, which analyzes each image by comparing frames to its built-in database. This leads to a reduction of visual artifacts, replacement of corrupted pixels and correction of black levels for optimized picture quality.

One exception to the company’s newly adopted Fit and Pro naming convention is the Sony T15 Series Ultrabooks. The two models in the series, the Sony VAIO T15 SVT15114CXS and Sony VAIO T15 SVT15117CXS, are each equipped with a 15.5” capacitive touchscreen with Full HD 1920 x 1080 native resolution. Both come with a SuperMulti DVD burner 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0+HS technology, and Windows 8 (64-bit) installed. Depending on your configuration, you can purchase one with an Ivy Bridge Intel Core i5 or an Intel Core i7 processor. RAM is available in either 4GB or 8GB, while storage space is either a 750GB hard drive cache or a 1TB hard drive. Both hard drives have a 32GB solid-state drive cache.
