Want the most bang for the buck in an electronic reader? Consider the Libre eBook Reader PRO from Aluratek and the Cybook Opus from Bookeen (left). Each reader comes loaded with a library of older classics to which you'll want to add your own titles. Both recognize a variety of formats and let you adjust the text size. And each reader has a few tricks up its 5-inch display,
The Libre comes with a 2-Gigabyte SD card loaded with 100 books. That's in addition to the 118-Megabytes of internal storage. The library embraces an eclectic collection from Aesop's Fables to Wuthering Heights. You can listen to music using the built-in MP3 player while brushing up on The Complete Works of William Shakespeare.
Framed in black (left) or white, the Libre eBook contains a 5-inch screen (480 x 640 pixels) capable of showing 16 levels of gray. The ePaper Display enables you to view pictures in nuanced black and white. Earphones are included. The internal lithium-ion polymer battery is good for 24 hours of continuous reading or two weeks of standby time.
You can adjust the text to one of six sizes, letting you strike the right balance between readability and making the most efficent use of screen real estate before turning the page. Pages can be rotated from portrait to landscape mode and back. There are bookmark and auto page turning functions.
The Aluratek Libre eBook Reader PRO supports these formats: ePUB (Adobe Digital Edition with Digital Rights Managment or non-DRM), PDF (Adobe Digital Edition DRM/non-DRM), TXT, FB2, MOBI (non-DRM only), PRC (non-DRM only), RTF, MP3, JPG, BMP, GIF, and animated GIF. The reader weighs a mere 7.6 ounces. Also in the box are a USB cable, AC power charger, hand strap, and carrying pouch. The Libre eBook is available in black or white.
At only 5.3 ounces, the Cybook Opus from Bookeen is one of the lightest electronic readers available. Yet, it comes preloaded with a library – classics by such authors as Twain, Verne, and Melville. Moby Dick alone sops up a significant portion of the Cybook's one-gigabyte of internal memory. You can expand the memory using a micro SD card (not included). The Cybook Opus is compatible with saved HTML pages.
The Cybook contains a motion-detection sensor that automatically orientates the screen to a landscape or portrait view as you rotate the screen. With 12 font sizes, the Cybook affords plenty of flexibility in letting you adjust the text to be as big or small as you like.
The screen contains a resolution of 600 x 800 pixels and supports four levels of gray. One bookmark is allowed per book. Besides HTML, the supported formats are ePub, PDF, TXT, JPG, GIF, and PNG. The battery charge will power 8,000 page flips. Although there is no built-in dictionary for help as you read other books and no audio player, there is, however, a monochrome picture viewer. The Cybook Opus from Bookeen is available with a white bezel.
