The legend of the Cerro del Muerto tells us that, many years ago, the Chichimecas, the Nahua Chalcas and three extremely tall, stout priests with a majestic and imposing aspect lived. One day, when the sun was finishing its task, one of the priests had the idea of taking a bath in the hot water pool of La Cantera and when he threw himself into the water, he disappeared.
The Indians who accompanied the priest, desperate for his disappearance, believed that he had been snatched by the Chalcas, and ran to give notice to his companions. As a result of what happened, a war between Chichimecas and Chalcas began. These were prepared to repel the attack and in the furores of the battle, appeared the lost priest, who was crossed by an arrow.
When he tried to flee, he left such a trace of blood that, to date, he finds the red earth. And below where he fell dead, he formed with his corpse the Cerro del Muerto that can be seen to the west of the city and that, according to legend, hides a town in its bowels.
To that town buried with the body of the giant, they say, one enters by a great mysterious tunnel to the ramparts of the entire population, today Aguascalientes, which have arrived from astonishment to the archaeologists.
The History of Don Agustín González says that, due to the carelessness of the rulers, there has not been an exploration of this surprising archery, which would now be difficult due to the state of destruction in which it finds itself; nevertheless, countless news is had of other entrances that could specify all that field perforated by the hand of the man. The innocent chatter tells that arriving at that city buried under the body of the giant priest, there are still men with luminous eyes and ghosts of an extinct race.
The legend says that the puddle where the missionary fell was sown by previous tribes that came to the place by men who were able to sow water; they made a hole, they put water from their guajes and a half of salt, they covered it and in the course of three years it was a huge spring.
It is said that there are many other entrances to the hidden village that, according to the Legend of the Cerro del Muerto and many people, exists under the hill. True or not, it is something that will leave us with doubt for a long time.
